Maron's Twitter exchange with Oswalt yesterday was pretty funny.

H.P. Hovercraft and the Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I kind of enjoyed that exchange, particularly Oswalt's tweet about Jerry from Parks & Rec.

I am interested but hate Twitter and can't figure out how to see both of their posts at the same time.

booth traums (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 24 May 2012 04:03 (eleven years ago) link

twitter is horrible

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Thursday, 24 May 2012 09:43 (eleven years ago) link

Killer Beas is one of my favorite recent interviews. His unguarde attitudes about the south and racism were kind of unexpected. And the ambulance/funeral home stuff was A+

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Thursday, 24 May 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

Unguarded obv

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Thursday, 24 May 2012 16:53 (eleven years ago) link

that grantland article is pretty bad, even as a parody of WTF. also ignores that it's a great interview tactic to drop a vulnerable admission about yourself in order to get the interviewee to open up.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:08 (eleven years ago) link

I've been listening to the podcast too long; all I could think when I read it is 'oh man how much is it going to suck when Maron reads all this' because I could just see him underlining the phrases and criticisms and rewriting an angry email 20 times

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:09 (eleven years ago) link

Tho the Lorne Michaels obsession thing is pretty indisputable. I think Maron gets too much of a rep as the purity comic, see all of those Oswalt tweets. He's more like the 40 something ex-punk rocker dudes I work with who are kind of wondering where to go now that their youthful integrity codes have been defaced or made irrelevant.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:16 (eleven years ago) link

he's mellowed SO much over the course of the podcast - if anything more should be made of how beneficial the podcast has been for him, more than anyone lol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

Killer Beaz sort of surprised me by getting all Christiany toward the end...not preachy or anything, and I definitely understand why what happened in his life would steer him that direction...but that was an unusual turn on a Maron podcast. I love his whole vibe, though.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 May 2012 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

I really loved the Danny McBride one - he's just such a likable guy. The stories about fighting the abusive boyfriend of his ex, and his fantasy spec script about The Draven (half-dragon, half-man) - so much funny shit in that one.

She Got the Shakes, Thursday, 24 May 2012 22:34 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, McBride was really enjoyable. I think Maron's going to want to be his buddy. Shit, I kind of want to.

booth traums (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 25 May 2012 06:03 (eleven years ago) link

Maron does seem to have gotten some real friendships out of the WTF project -- Scharpling for one -- which might be one of his motivators in doing it, and is a sort of deliberate reversal of the first half of his career.

Three Word Username, Friday, 25 May 2012 06:15 (eleven years ago) link

lol @ maron's sympathetic southern drawl during that killer beaz interview

I like the photo atop the Grantland article, because I imagine the interviews looking more like that than upright across a kitchen table.

OTM

Odd Spice (Eazy), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

i think i'm realizing that some of my problems with maron aren't problems with maron but with people i've known who aspire to have that kind of personality

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 25 May 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

I searched the thread but I found no discussion of the episode with Jillian Lauren? Am I missing something?
I usually find this podcast a little too professional bro talk for my taste, but she was amazing! What a smarty. She really knows how to tell a story.

game of crones (La Lechera), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 13:51 (eleven years ago) link

I remember that one being pretty good. I'm still catching up on this years and listened to the Mary Mack episode the other day. Her voice was cracking me up because I have relatives from far north Wisconsin and my female cousin sounds EXACTLY like her.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 13:55 (eleven years ago) link

Does he always sort of recap what the guest has said so far every 5 min or so, or was he just doing that because her story was so totally ott?

game of crones (La Lechera), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

If the story seems to him particularly "out there" or unusual, he will...I think it's more for him than us, lol

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:08 (eleven years ago) link

Anyone listen to Bo Burnham yet? I find that guy's act painfully unfunny, so I was wondering if his interview is worth sitting through.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

yeah im not at all familiar w/ his 'comedy' but it's a p good convo

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

i actually liked the song at the end too (art is dead) but im prob not gonna be seeking out his act, etc

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

most of it was him winning maron over by being so hard on himself

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:54 (eleven years ago) link

I'm about halfway through it and I'm enjoying the conversation.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:11 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, I don't really follow Chelsea Handler at all, but I was shocked to see that she was only a year older than me. She has the wrecked voice of a 47 year-old that smokes constantly.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

i thought the chelsea handler convo was great! she basically turned the tables on him.

goole, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

haha yeah i kinda had the same reaction (she's a year older than me, too). tbf i figured she was a 42 year old who takes pretty dece care of herself.

it's smdh time in America (will), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

just the thought of her makes me IA, I couldn't take a whole interview

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:55 (eleven years ago) link

I'm only ten minutes into her interview and she sounds like an awful person so far. Her dismissive, "is this your main source of income" to Marc re: the podcast was pretty awful.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:55 (eleven years ago) link

ha come on she's fucking with him

goole, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

Like I said, I'm just getting into it, but it doesn't read that way at all so far.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

very small doses with that one, for me. four minutes of her monologue once a week or so and i'm like ok igi.

haven't heard her WTF yet though

it's smdh time in America (will), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

okay, I guess you can start to figure out her being mean to Marc is her "thing" when she says, "you do understand what sex is, right?". but she still sounds pretty awful to me.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

her thing is to be drunk

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link

the rick shapiro interview was old school WTF. some stand up i've never heard of being semi-pissed at Maron and talking about a bodybuilder mouth-raping him.

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:03 (eleven years ago) link

ha come on she's fucking with him

nah she genuinely doesn't understand that it's free

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 00:09 (eleven years ago) link

I love the WTF episodes with truly big-time comedians (Russell Peters, Patton Oswalt, Handler) and Maron's combination of envy and judgment. The Handler one made for such an enjoyably tense interview because it was clear that she hadn't heard the podcast and didn't know how it worked.

Odd Spice (Eazy), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 03:12 (eleven years ago) link

Did anyone here listen to that new Marc and Tom ep? I was wondering what maron said about his phone call with Jon stewart

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 9 June 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link

Stewart basically told Maron that Maron had really been a dick to Stewart back in the day & he'd rather not go on the show. But he's welcome to grab a coffee anytime.

ie you don't get to work this out on your show. talk to me in person, like a grownup & we'll see what happens.

can't blame him. maron has that "well if I'm sorry that makes it okay" thing that only goes so far.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 9 June 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

...there was also the conclusion drawn that just because you are ready to apologize doesn't mean the other person is ready to forgive. Scharpling made noises of complete understanding and didn't mention PF Tompkins by name, but it was pretty clear that he knew what Maron was talking about.

Three Word Username, Saturday, 9 June 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

I'm betting that maron never bothered to meet stewart

Hauntingly Unemployed American (President Keyes), Saturday, 9 June 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

Donnell Rawlings ep is great so far.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 June 2012 19:34 (eleven years ago) link

lol at donnell's dad's reasons for liking snoop dogg.

mizzell, Friday, 15 June 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

Is saying " one" a real thing, or is donnell playing a joke on white comedy nerds?
