Tourneur's STARS IN MY CROWN is on TONIGHT! It's a sweet gentle dream of a movie, probably better than TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD in any medium.

Originally I thought they were airing Late Summer.
This makes a helluva lot more sense as part of a triple feature that includes Little Darlings, though.

Spike Lee as guest programmer on Thursday July 5...Ace In The Hole, Night of the Hunter and On The Waterfront.
Will finally get to see the former. If you haven't, for unfathomable some reason, seen the latter two, cancel any and all plans.

i've seen Ace in the Hole and On the Waterfront - two of my fave films of all time. never saw Night of the Hunter tho.
― Mordy, Monday, 2 July 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link
Can't get too cocky as I've never seen Ace, but seriously...you are not allowed to do anything else til you've seen NotH.
Also, Friday has a run of Jimmy Stewart westerns followed by D'Zullawski's Posession. It's ok/healthy if I don't leave my house for the rest of the week, right?

I've never seen On the Waterfront. The other two are favorites. Saw Ace in the Hole at the Film Forum when it was restored. Bleakest movie ever. Night of the Hunter is a longtime fave and I've seen it many many times.

I watched Sullivan's Travels the other night -- just wonderful. In fact -- this is my secret shame brought to light -- it was the first Sturges film I'd seen.

That's nothing. I am at least that tall.

huh. the very end is the most disturbing + unsettling part btw!
(this all makes it sound like a haneke movie or smething but it in no way is)
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 23:42 (eleven years ago) link
i could tell where it was going. it was disturbing from the get-go, and it was clearly getting more so as the movie went on

Bound for Glory is great. Hal Ashby. Really beautiful. Slow maybe, long. It's been a while but I remember loving it.

Looking over the July schedule...Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark is coming up on the 20th. That sounded interesting when it was mentioned on the horror poll. (Can't remember if it placed in the top 100)
― Neil Jung (WmC), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 01:54 (eleven years ago) link
Classic but also kinda dated. Campy in good and bad ways. Like not extreme camp, just a bit of 80sness
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 02:02 (eleven years ago) link
Also Possession and Repulsion overnight this Friday night.
― Neil Jung (WmC), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 02:06 (eleven years ago) link

drums along the mohawk is extraordinary BTW

what, no compulsion too?
i need to see drums along the mohawk. there's a bunch of old ilx threads where a 20-year-old me whines embarrassingly about how john ford isn't that great. i wish there were a way to edit old posts.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 06:04 (eleven years ago) link
Not intentionally campy...but certain scenes that I think were meant to be "atmospheric" now read as "dated", which I find campy I guess.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link
Don't worry J.D., you are allowed to change your opinion of directors as you get older. Our late beloved Andrew Sarris showed the way.

i see. that might be true, but they are dated in a nice way... much like michael mann's 80s work or something similar.

anyone else with DirecTV?
Blogs/forums are saying TCM HD coming July 19
― ♆ (gr8080), Saturday, 7 July 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link
so how would that work for most of what they have? remastered content?
― Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 8 July 2012 02:52 (eleven years ago) link
It's not generally "HD" in the sense that an HBO HD would show the remastered versions of films. they aren't as clear and crisp in general, though I watched a bit of Dr. Strangelove on it today and that's about as good as I've ever seen it (haven't seen the Blu-Ray, but better than DVD I reckon). The picture is cleaner than SD, especially if you have a larger TV, but the crucial point for me is proper, anamorphic aspect ratios.
― Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Sunday, 8 July 2012 02:57 (eleven years ago) link
of course it also takes up a lot more DVR space, a fact that Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice has been reminding me of for months now.

i dnt think they take up as much space as like a 1 hr program of network or hbo "hd" tho
― johnny crunch, Sunday, 8 July 2012 03:07 (eleven years ago) link
I think they do. HD signal is the same amount of data being transmitted/recorded as any other HD, regardless of the quality of the HD, no? Like the size each minute takes up is dependent on the type of channel (HD or SD) rather than the specific program?
Also I've got Diary and Au Revoir on mine as well.
