the Panda track is better imo.

Both songs sound like Avey Tare to me.

yeah both are avey. don't get a feels vibe at all from these.

mizzell, Monday, 7 May 2012 13:56 (five years ago) Permalink

i really like the percussion. agree the tunes aren't great, but these were far from the best songs on the last tour.

mizzell, Monday, 7 May 2012 14:12 (five years ago) Permalink

Wow, seems ILM really has moved on from Animal Collective...not even a bit of abuse for old time's sake?

NSFW Australia (seandalai), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 00:18 (five years ago) Permalink

ya these songs haven't struck me very much yet, which as a fanboy is pretty rare for new Animal Collective material. I think maybe I'm not especially digging the sonic palette they're using, it all sounds a bit murky and indistinct without having other qualities to make up for that. But then I've seen them doing their latest set of songs a couple of times and listened to them a couple more and I don't really remember these songs, so whatever I still anticipate the album. V uninternetty response I admit, it's time to proclaim a shark jump.

Doesn't feel like it has anything at all to do with 2012

Not sure what's '2012', but this comment sticks with me.

i'm holding out for the "Untitled" song that pitchfork filmed them performing at p4k fest last year

I just happened to throw on Feels this morning on my way to work. Still my favorite of album of theirs.

Centipede HZ is their Exile on Main Street. It's its own world... the best thing they've done.

"health reasons" or "family problems" always raise red flags

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 12 July 2013 01:49 (four years ago) Permalink

One of these dudes has a pretty significant drug problem that is not very secret, but they've just kicked him out of the band before. Makes me wonder what it would take for them to cancel dates?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 12 July 2013 02:32 (four years ago) Permalink

Avey Tare seems to have a lot of throat issues.

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 02:39 (four years ago) Permalink

Maybe his vocal chords are fxed up

I don't think it should be required of anybody, but coming clean is a good look. I did like it when Fiona Apple cancelled a tour because her dog died.

I didnt know deakin had a drug problem before this thread. He was hilarious in concert because he wore the collar of his oxford shirt flipped up and would dance around while playing his guitar, in contrast to the other, more staid band members. My ex gf and i kept saying "deakmeister" "the deak" and "fuckin D" the whole concert. I miss her.

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 03:54 (four years ago) Permalink

Anyway, everyone here knows i love this band and i wish them all the best.

seconded. I would like details on deakin too.

In this case though spazmatazz, i think the issue is avey's vocal chords because he has had laryngitis and complications from that over the past 8 months

Treeship, Friday, 12 July 2013 17:50 (four years ago) Permalink

ah ok. i wouldnt be surprised if the way he sings has damaged his voice already

The details are: Deakin doesn't do drugs. Or maybe he does!

i love Deakin.

i want Albert to come back and give us the deets on what he said before. or should i say the Deaks

i mean, like i said before, he was dressed in a risky business sort of way when i saw him in boston, with his collar flipped up. maybe they had to cancel the tour because he took a job at an investment bank.

Treeship, Saturday, 13 July 2013 00:06 (four years ago) Permalink

i hope avey tare's voice recovers. this song was really good live iirc.

Saw them live at roskilde. They managed to play ten songs in eighty minutes, lots of droning interludes. Started out with Moonjock and What Would I Want? Sky, which means that the first fifteen minutes was in 7/8. At that point most of the audience had sortof realised they weren't going to get a dance-party. The audience only livened up when they played My Girls and Brother Sport. It got really bad reviews, but I loved it. Sorta.

Jealous you were in denmark. I studied abroad there and it's a great country.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:05 (four years ago) Permalink

I'm Danish. And yeah, it's quite great, though the summer-weather is rubbish. Roskilde was really fantastic this year, but I've never been to any other big festival, so I can't really compare it.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:11 (four years ago) Permalink

I had to leave right before roskilde and i was devastated. Do you live in Copenhagen? Thats where I (predictably) was.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:14 (four years ago) Permalink

Yup. Well, technically Frederiksberg, but it's all Copenhagen to me. Where did you study, and what?

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:24 (four years ago) Permalink

I went to a school called the Danish Institute for Study Abroad for a semester, which is on Vestergade. All my classes were in English and were related to the humanities - philosophy, russian literature, art history and nordic mythology. My best class was on kierkegaard. I should have tried to learn at least a little danish but it didnt seem like there was enough time

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 15:34 (four years ago) Permalink

Oh right, that sounds logical. I think it's a part of the University of Copenhagen, where I studied humanities as well, but still it's own thing.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 July 2013 16:26 (four years ago) Permalink

wait, deakin said the n-word??

i also enjoy in line skateing (spazzmatazz), Monday, 15 July 2013 18:28 (four years ago) Permalink

Yeah. And the worst part is, this most recent outburst earned him his own radio show.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 18:36 (four years ago) Permalink

Listening to Centipede Hz again. One more track until Amanita. Excited.

Treeship, Monday, 15 July 2013 23:04 (four years ago) Permalink

merriweather didn't speak much to me when it first came out but it's been a really spectacular part of my summer. what a wonderful hippie album, totally joyous. also is this the best appropriation of all those kompat pop ambient collections ever? i feel like all those sounds are such a part of MPP. i also pulled out person pitch again for the summer and it's really perfect.

centipede isn't speaking to me now, seems denser and inaccessible and without space. i've only given it a few listens though.

marcos, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 19:36 (four years ago) Permalink

i think centipede is more of an avey tare album and merriweather a panda bear one: the former is nervous and jittery and each of the songs seem to want to do a few different things as once. this is what i like about it, but i like merriweather too for the things that it does well.

Just to be sure: Dave Portner is Avey Tares real name, and Abigail Portner is his sister, who has made several of their album covers, right? They must be quite ugly shoes, then.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 17 July 2013 21:57 (four years ago) Permalink

I hung my head in shame at the record store today, as I finally caved and bought the Prospect Hummer thingy with Vashti Bunyan (which is the reason I got it). I was totally amused that the spine credits the band as "AC." Teehee.
