the remastered EPs sound very very good. nice to have a reason to listen to all these tracks again anyway.

the first was loveless as you remember, the second was meant for kevin's chinchillas

Bilinda sounds louder/ clearer on the EPs.

piscesx, Monday, 7 May 2012 03:36 (eleven years ago) link

So any idea what is actually coming out in the U.S.? I've seen the EP collection available for pre-order at Amazon, but neither of the other two remasters are.

Haha oh wait, the Loveless remaster is an import for now. $66. Ugh.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 May 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

Only $52 for the Isn't Anything remaster though.

I ordered direct from Amazon UK (I didn't realize you could place orders using your US account) - I think it was less than twenty bucks shipped to the US. Should be here in a week or so

Brakhage, Monday, 7 May 2012 17:20 (eleven years ago) link

it's just so bizarre to me that there is not a single mention online of a US release. i keep hearing may 15th tossed around but somehow i think sony wants to build up anticipation beyond just a week - well, anticipation in context of announce date to release date. they've sort been waited on for the past decade and a half.

kelpolaris, Monday, 7 May 2012 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw, Amazon lists June 5th for the U.S. release of the expensive ass import versions. the fairly priced EPs collection is listed as May 15th.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

Not sure why anyone would wait. Just order from Amazon.co.uk. Around $15 each shipped.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2012 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

Aah, but you forget the part where I have Amazon Prime. Free 2day shipping, fool.

kelpolaris, Monday, 7 May 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

also, i already have flacs of the remasters and possess an embarrassing amount of unreleased MBV material. "bilinda song" has been one of my favorites for years and it kinda confuses me that "kevin song" wasn't included with the remastered ep's. i'm buying these purely for support-ical reasons, as any funding that contributes to shield's putting forth this new album i will gladly donate. i've considered starting a paypal fund just to hurry this shit up - the worlds ending for chrissake.

kelpolaris, Monday, 7 May 2012 21:42 (eleven years ago) link

OK, so -

- Single-disc remaster of Loveless via Amazon.com: $66.50

- Double-disc remaster of Loveless via amazon.co.uk: $19.11 (including shipping)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00197X1V8/ref=ox_ya_os_product

I got... um, the latter one.

Stravinsky joins the Zulu nation (zero of the signified), Monday, 7 May 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

I too have Amazon prime, but the shipping on these from the UK was about $2.50 each when ordered together and only takes about 5 days.

Anyway, if you're not in a rush, then I'm sure there'll be a US release someday.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

ok, maybe i'll consider that then. how did you get your prime shipping to transfer over? i tried logging into amazon.co.uk w/ my US account and was required to make a new one.

kelpolaris, Monday, 7 May 2012 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

Prime is not eligible when ordering from the UK site. Your login/password should be the same as your US account. Here is the shipping cost schedule for the USA: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200706160&pop-up=1

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

The shipping cost I mentioned earlier is standard for everyone (Prime or no) and was based on ordering all 3.

I mean, if you're fine with your FLACs, they'll probably be out here eventually for $10/each with Prime.

I am just an old physical media nerd.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2012 22:45 (eleven years ago) link

That gets excited about imports etc. Remember those???

Spencer Chow, Monday, 7 May 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

Just picked up my copy of the EP's CD from HMV for £10. Bit of a missed opportunity for liner notes. Just pictures of the EP covers on the inside sleeve and again in the booklet with a centre spread of small band pics.

In hmv, all three bought together on special offer of £25.

So I'm assuming the printing on the CDs themselves is wrong? Confusing article.

Just order from Amazon.co.uk already! Virtually the same price they're getting in the UK shops (including shipping) and you'll only have to wait a week maybe.

Alright, I'm done trying to help.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

I may end up doing just that, but the last time I ordered something from Amazon UK it ended up being a huge cluterfuck wrt to the order and it ultimately ended up getting cancled. It just made me not want to go that route again. Granted, this was in like 2006 so maybe things have improved since then.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe it was one of their sellers? I've never had any problem ordering directly from Amazon.co.uk going back to 2004.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

I order from Amazon UK pretty consistently and haven't had any problems ever.

So the takeaway from all this is to not purchase any remasters on the first go-around. I had to deal with this with the New Order remasters and I'm fucking tired of it.

Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

So according to the dudes at Reckless, Amazon UK may be our only option for some time. They said they've gotten tons of questions, so they looked into when they'd come out here. Short answer, according to them anyway, is - they're not. Reckless will be getting the import versions in about a month or so, but they'll be expensive. As of now they aren't seeing any domestic issues through any of their distributors.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

These are selling hugely.

Top ten entries for all three?

Re: the mislabelling and the "digital transfer glitch", if the way to tell the difference is indeed the clear start to Only Shallow and the fadier-fade to Soon, then they are mislabelled. The glitch 2:46 into What You Want is also definitely there, but it's weird, not like regular clipping, almost like a fault in the tape that's just on Bilinda's vocals or something. I need to read the P4K interview again, cos Shields mentions sacrificing one instant of one track for the sake of the whole album; I dunno if it was on the original remaster or the 1/2 inch one. If he's as much of a perfectionist as he's meant to be, it's hard to fathom that this could be an avoidable mistake.

Good quote from the above interview:

Much has been made in the MBV mythology of drum & bass tracks that never saw light of day... until now. "There's one drum & bass song, from that era when we were doing drum & bass music, which never came out," Shields reveals. "We were actually inventing a new sound – and this song doesn't really represent it, but – we were doing slowed down drum & bass music around 1993, 1994. But it just came to nothing, mainly because we didn't know how to do it. We didn't realise that you use just a few good samples, then it's about how you stretch them on the computer. We were trying to program it, work out every beat. We got some really good things, but the lesson we learnt was that without the element of spontaneity, without the element of chance we used to get from live playing, it doesn't work for us. Just making music on the computer isn't really what I'm into. But there's one song that survived from that period, that approach. Like slowed down drum & bass. Except, um... it's really fast."

btw didn't i braek ur heart (NickB), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 11:26 (eleven years ago) link

Hey Sick Mouthy, I too noticed the errant apostrophe on the EP collection sleeve. But I think that was an aesthetic choice, as ungrammatical as it is, due to their use of lower case text; without the apostrophe it would read as 'eps'.

wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 11:54 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I assumed so too. As a copywriter it bugs me, though!

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 12:21 (eleven years ago) link

The sleeve of Isn't Anything mixes capitalized (title) and non-capitalized (band name), so there's no real justification for the ep's thing

CD1, the mis-labelled 1/2 inch analogue tape remaster, is definitely more physical.

I'd actually like to hear the 1/2 analog master on a big audiophile-level system. I'm hearing a "difference" but I may be missing out.

For some indefinite date in the future as opposed to probably within a week if you buy from Amazon.co.uk. Normally seems to be that when things are going the opposite direction across the Atlantic, from Amazon itself anyway, as opposed to marketplace. & a lot of marketplace stores are U.S. anyway when you're ordering over here.
