i'm surprised that qb's back then lasted more than a couple years

I had completely forgotten about Chief Montana.

Peyton going to the Titans in 2013 is going to be a great story.

peter king sucks up to reports on brett favre

omar little, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Chief Montana was actually very good.

Typical crap reporting by King on favre. His article in last weeks SI about the Farve saga is the definition of embarrassing.

Farves wife is just a total pain in the ass.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Pennington gave his heart and soul and rotator cuff to the Jets. He even took a pay cut once, if I remember correctly. Now he'll be forgotten. Very unjust.

Fuck farve

^^ the article in that link appears to be written by john larroquette under the pen name "ed thompson".

Eisbaer, Friday, 8 August 2008 00:10 (fifteen years ago) link

well, what's there to remember. Chad was a good guy, no doubt he was a team player.....

BUT HE HAD ONE GOOD FUCKING SEASON!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I now have TWO teams I can pretend to root for in the AFC East!
Bills beacuse they're the fucking Bills and Jets because LOL FAVRE!!!
I don't know why it took me all day to think of this but I guess I was having too many chuckles at "how does retiree shot madden curse? he comes back and gets traded to the jets"

El Tomboto, Friday, 8 August 2008 07:54 (fifteen years ago) link

re: the chad

i think you could argue he had at least two pretty good seasons and two serviceable ones. i can think of many guys who came into the league w/ a higher profile who did not fare as well.

j.q higgins, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

He was really good in what, 2002, probably the only year he was healthy.

leavethecapital, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Question: did Pennington ever have a good arm, or was he always a touch / short route type of QB?

As for Chad's offensive failings, I think some of the blame has to be shared w/ the Jets' system under Herman Edwards & Paul Hackett -- thanks to my diehard J-E-T-S fan friend, I saw way too many games where there were way too many 3rd-and-longs (between 6-8 yards) that ended w/ completions 2+ yards short of the down marker.

Won't argue with you there--the Jets had nothing to lose with him and got a hell of a lot more than they bargained for in 2002. but then again, it's not saying much--high profile QBs regularly fail, lest the fates of Cade McNown, Ryan Leaf, et al be remembered

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

dude was never the same after all the surgeries, became more turnover prone.

but hey, he's a Jet, what could you expect....

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Chad Pennington might be a good pickup for a team like the Vikings, even as insurance. Pennington is steady and if they can keep him off his back and put the weight on the running game, I think he would be fine. The guy understands the game. Pennington's career completion rate is 65.8, that is freakin' excellent and the guy is not a total interception hog. He just has gotten pounded playing for the Jets, but I could see it working in the right situation ala Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer. I think he would be perfect for the Vikings with that running game, especially if Jackson cannot get it done or is too mistake prone (ala Johnson replacing King for the Bucs). Minnesota should rap him up and he will be ready about week 7 if it isn't working with the young guy.

I think Pennington should steer clear of Carolina or the Bears, as those teams o-line are so bad, it is just stepping in front of a different gun. Minnesota or maybe some place like KC would be better.

cankles, Sunday, 10 August 2008 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i find it hard to believe carolina's line is anywhere near as bad as chicago's - gross, otah, wharton and kalil are all young players with plenty of upside. tho they are built for power running, not pass pro.

More from the you-can't-make-this-up file:
"It was very interesting to hear him say, 'Let's have a lot of fun.' A guy who's been in the league that long, first thing that came out of his mouth was 'Let's have a lot of fun.'"

three weeks pass...

(´・ω・)つ(・(・ (am0n), Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

the adalius thomas sack was great. leon washington looked like a squirrel trying to block a pontiac catalina on that play.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 16:48 (fifteen years ago) link

that sack was hilarious. it was a 20 yard loss, most of which was made up by Thomas carrying them backwards. i was praying for them to reach the end zone. i think Favre actually fumbled it as they collapsed at the end, but Washington - who hadn't touched the ground for about 15 yards - managed to pounce on it.

celebrated pop troubadour Stefan Dennis (Roberto Spiralli), Monday, 15 September 2008 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

the pats didn't even look that good to my untrained eyes, but farvropolitan looked terrible. serious mad bomber, happy feet...whatever cliche you want to use for a qb playing not so good.

j.q higgins, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

pats d isn't as quick as it could be which is one reason they give up a lot of yards. but they are skilled which is why they don't give up a lot of points, when they get down to the red zone and don't have to cover as much ground they become a little more stout.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm sure they're skilled and they're most certainly well-coached, but they haven't really played anyone approaching good, have they?

j.q higgins, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

and they certainly weren't playing that great yesterday, regardless of their normal talent set.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Pats played a sensible, no-risk game against a team they knew they could contain on defense. the only time i was concerned on either side of the ball was when Cassel kept getting sacked over and over again in the 3rd quarter, like he needed 30 seconds to make a pass. but i was impressed that all that time he didn't do anything stupid with the ball.

the biggest question mark was over Maroney. a lot of running backs had bad weekends and he was down there with the worst of them.
