Lamp, Friday, 4 May 2012 20:31 (eleven years ago) link

i was organizing my records and i realized i owned so many of this dudes records. if you count the cds that i used to own and have sold i think ive given this dude more money than most of my favorite artists...

the 'field recordings' collection is really strong, i am listening to it right now and theres some dope jamzz

Lamp, Friday, 4 May 2012 20:34 (eleven years ago) link

this would also be there

Vainio* • Fennesz - Invisible Architecture #2 (CD, Album)
Audiosphere 2002

nakhchivan, Friday, 4 May 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

yeah field recordings is good, i forgot abt that

nakhchivan, Friday, 4 May 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

the fenn o'berg records rule.

also great:
Cloud with Keith Rowe, Toshimaru Nakamura and Oren Ambarchi (2005)

I remember really liking this:
Plus Forty Seven Degrees 56' 37" Minus Sixteen Degrees 51' 08" (1999)

been a while tho. I never listened to his solo records much. endless summer never clicked either. plays is cool.

xpost - oh yeah! field recordings is nice.

yo just a couple (Matt P), Friday, 4 May 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

four years since i paid attention to a fennesz record /: though i do remember 'black sea' being ... i don't know, tonally more expansive and emotionally more affecting than other things i associate him with

would like to hear the one with rowe and nakamura and ambarchi. who is ambarchi?

voted 'plays' but ... you know

thomp, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

who is ambarchi?

notable exclusion from spin magazines 101 guitar gods list, has a very good new record out on touch atm

Lamp, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

how did i stop knowing about christian fennesz after 2005? besides black sea i guess.

i really want to hear Knoxville with David Daniell and Tony Buck (2010)

i love what he does in a group, as an improviser or whatever. i think i'd take group/live fennesz over his solo work every time.

yo just a couple (Matt P), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

endless summer is totally amazing

yo just a couple (Matt P), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

'a year in a minute' is one of my favorite things hes done but ive grown sort of cold to the rest of that album, i might dig it out tonight tho and see if i can figure out why

Lamp, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:22 (eleven years ago) link

Good poll. head goes "Live in Japan" but heart goes "Endless Summer". I hadn't heard it, only read about it, before I bought it. I found it in a record shop in Barcelona, we came back to the apartment from a pre Sonar event a little wasted and I put it on. Amazing stuff. Still think about it being one of the best music discoveries of my lifetime.

mmmm, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

plays 7" for me pl

Ward Fowler, Friday, 4 May 2012 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

'a year in a minute' is what i was thinking of when i typed that! i'm being wowed by the seven stars 10" at the moment. missed u fennesz.

yo just a couple (Matt P), Friday, 4 May 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

disk 2 of cloud is gorgeous.

the GRM experience Christian Fennesz, Vainio, Zanési) recording is not on this list, that one's real good too.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Friday, 4 May 2012 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

plays, then instrument, then endless summer, then black sea

jesus christ (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 5 May 2012 02:16 (eleven years ago) link

The Knoxville record is tremendous. It has to be Endless Summer but this guy is goooood.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Saturday, 5 May 2012 07:53 (eleven years ago) link

Endless Summer is a bit front-loaded imo, but that 1st side has some of my fave CF stuff. Voted Live In Japan but this guy is so solid, Field Recordings and Venice and Plays and the harsher Mego stuff are all top notch. Never bothered to track down a lot of the collab stuff but maybe I should check out the Fenn O'Berg eh?

indeed

happy audio is nice

nakhchivan, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:22 (eleven years ago) link

Don't know all of these (need to investigate Fenn O'Berg), but probably Venice of what I do know.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

that seven stars 10" sounds like fennesz doing easy listening, i love it. he is the trv kvlt digital sound bob moss

"Field Recordings" is his most consistent album, although "Live In Japan" probably captures the essence of Fennesz a little better.

I've only heard about half of these though.

'Field Recordings' for me, there's nothing else like it.

phuturephase, Sunday, 6 May 2012 11:14 (eleven years ago) link

Endless Summer was my window into ambient so that. Never heard the Field Recordings album. **Listening**

musicfanatic, Sunday, 6 May 2012 14:05 (eleven years ago) link

I've been wanting to hear that live Japan recording for years, almost a decade now, but never see it in any record stores. May have to breakdown and order it online.

musicfanatic, Sunday, 6 May 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

I've only heard about half of these though.

Same for me. I think I listen to Endless Summer the most, although there are one or two weak tracks. I quite like Black Sea and Venice too. I remember really liking Return of Fenn o'Berg so I don't know why I haven't listened in years. I don't think I've heard Cloud! That's an exciting lineup.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 6 May 2012 14:17 (eleven years ago) link

discovered him through venice, must have listened to it every day for months. would like to hear that knoxville record.

sonderangerbot, Sunday, 6 May 2012 14:59 (eleven years ago) link

4 weeks till poll closes, hmm maybe i'll throw in my 2c. bought endless summer and venice, really tried for a long time to get into them without much success. field recordings sounded pretty good last night though, especially the driving beat in instrument #1.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Venice for me - the Sylvian track fits so oddly with the rest but gives it this whole old Europe tonality. Perfect album to cross the Bosphorus to.

I never managed to get into Black Sea, which always bored the hell out of me. Seven Stars is a winner though.

New one out soon/now with the great Martin Brandlmayer and Werner Dafeldecker

Oh no whoops, it's a new pressing of an old record. Anyone heard it? Brandlmayer and Dafeldecker were both involved in one of my favourite projects of the 00's, Autistic Daughters w/ Dean Roberts.

Black Sea only received one vote? Huh. I couldn't listen to it every day, but it is some of the most stunning headphone music on which I've ever laid ears... rewards patience and attentive listening.

in stereo is poorly rated, but it's one of the most unified-sounding 'collabs' of the fenn o'berg stuff.

been listening to it the last couple days.. first track (30+ minute collaboration) is real nice, roomy. the subsequent three tracks are each individual efforts and tie in nicely w/the general theme. sort of melancholy western (romance) music. affecting stuff.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Monday, 25 June 2012 16:45 (eleven years ago) link

everybody should hear Brandlmayer and Siewert's 'too beutiful to burn'. incredible stuff.
