I haven't watched it or read this thread.

I'd like to think that the interest in this show is because everyone thinks it's the best new thing on TV and not because everyone's navel-gazing about their place in the world but

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

i almost got lost in the hypnotic field of my navel

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

I only watch TV drunk so how the hell would I know the characters' names?

Yeah, now Whiney's here we can all agree on something.

hating the band because of the fans is never a good look

again, i didn't read the thread. If it's really 2,000 posts of "Oh man, this is so good," I'll shut up

It is.

Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Thursday, 3 May 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

the first part was people talking about how they are all white the second was how they are all girls (I think? maybe it was how they are all rich or something) and the third is how they are all famous ppls children

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 3 May 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

if it was 2,000 posts of people talking about how good it is it would be a p dull thread

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

it's 2,000 posts of ppl commenting about how many posts there are / there will be / there should be

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

Ah, the olden days of like two months ago when I had to track down some broad and obscure thread to talk about Tiny Furniture. I think Lena Dunham is becoming internet famous, guys.

Is she the one in that show with Brian Williams' daughter?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 May 2012 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

she's the obscure broad

andrei rublev is the name of the protagonist of tarkovsky's 'andrei rublev'

which is to say, he expected a modicum of sobriety from its viewers

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

i can't remember the names of any of the characters of girls

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

i can't remember the names of their parents either

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

So basically a Russian niche market

xpost

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

sobriety? sure

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

It's not like she made it hard, nak, the first names all start with the same letter as the last. I think this is some kind of commentary on twee white girls' names or something about generations all 'cleverly' getting stuck with their parents' same naming shtick.

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

martha, marcy, mae and marlene?

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

i have seen michael mann's crepuscular 2004 masterpiece 'collateral' maybe ten or twelve times, before the last time i saw it i couldn't have told you the name of the protagonists

i couldn't have told you the name of the actors' fathers either, since english lacks patronymics, although from memory thomas cruise mapother is like the IInd or IIIrd iteration of thomas cruise mapothers, so i could have cheated there

nakhchivan, Thursday, 3 May 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

i couldn't tell you the names of ANY of the characters on game of thrones except for the dead guy being tony stark and the pimp is pinky

IVth iteration, apparently

jeez it took her a year to find a decent job and an apartment she could afford. i was nervous there for a minute. glad her harrowing experience ended well.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link

you can really rent an apartment in greenwich village for a thousand bucks a month? i want one.

still don't understand why more people don't just sell pot to supplement their incomes. it ain't rocket science.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

Or rob banks! It's where the money is!

haha, she had a plan for her life after college and it didn't pan out, and she was sad about it. WHAT A LOSER.

Everyone has something to say about Girls -- I've even had several male friends chime in on how impossible it is for them to relate on any level.

Mordy, Saturday, 5 May 2012 22:14 (eleven years ago) link

this was my favorite part:

HBO's new series, Girls, has caught a lot of backlash for depicting 20-somethings who live off their parents after college and struggle to find work in New York City.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2012 22:41 (eleven years ago) link

very controversial premise.

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2012 22:42 (eleven years ago) link

"haha, she had a plan for her life after college and it didn't pan out, and she was sad about it. WHAT A LOSER."

but it did pan out! pretty quickly! well, she has to live in brooklyn, so, i guess that's kinda sad :(

scott seward, Saturday, 5 May 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

i had a plan for my life after college that involved getting paid millions of dollars to dispense advice to world leaders and attend chichi parties. i too am sad this hasn't panned out and i hope u all feel sympathy for me.

Mordy, Saturday, 5 May 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I suppose we're often talking about loans here, which is basically like investing in yourself, so I reserve the right to feel bad for folks left paying that off with no good job prospects. Or, hell, I know people who work hard and still have tons of student loans to pay off. No different than house payments, car, etc.

Unless someone paid her tuition, in which case, yeah, who the fuck cares about your lame problems.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 5 May 2012 23:03 (eleven years ago) link

watched the first few episodes last night with my gf. fucking great! by far the funniest sitcom i've seen since arrested development & curb your enthusiasm. don't know who lena dunham is outside the show, but it's impressive that she's got creator, writer, director and star credits on this thing. helps explain why it feels so specific, personal and honest.

it's sort of horrible watching these smart and basically decent women make incredibly horrible life decisions, but that's also where most of the comedy comes from. holy shit @ hannah's rapey pederast "boyfriend" and that douchebag marnie was chasing after in the art gallery. "give less of a shit", bleah.

the other two girls are kind of irritating (note pavlovian avoidance of "annoying"), but enjoyably so. can't help be reminded of sex and the city, of course, and also of tina fey's general comic sensibility. lena = new tv hero.

i don't particularly care how "entitled" they seem (they do), or much they were or weren't fictionally given by their fictional parents. my interest in the show and my ability to sympathize with its characters isn't a product of fictional economic circumstances.

this show's sensibility is like the anti-tina fey imo

some dude, Sunday, 6 May 2012 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

If this show were about entitled male 20 something slackers, you'd be saying it sucks. You're all reverse sexists!

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 6 May 2012 02:15 (eleven years ago) link

weird, cuz i see a lot of similarity (with liz lemon, especially). self-doubt, self-mockery, irony & and stark, sarcastic meta-commentary on life as it goes by, proudly warts-and-all nerdiness & imperfection, bad boyfriends, urban life, reduced expectations, feminism that doesn't want to read as "feminist", etc.

stark = snark

unrelated, but man, hannah got burned so hard by her ex in that last episode. hurt just watching it.
