Yeah, this kind of lost me with the girl beelining to the nearest private room to rub one out cuz she was so turned on by the ridiculous art douche saying he’s such a MAN he will terrify her with his fucking skills.

w/r/t the conservative angle/nytimes editorial i mean it figures that douthat of all ppl would enjoy any and all things in the genre of "bad sex." I mean is this 2nd rate dunham or what:

"One successful foray ended on the guest bed of a high school friend’s parents, with a girl who resembled a chunkier Reese Witherspoon drunkenly masticating my neck and cheeks. It had taken some time to reach this point–”Do most Harvard guys take so long to get what they want?” she had asked, pushing her tongue into my mouth. I wasn’t sure what to say, but then I wasn’t sure this was what I wanted. My throat was dry from too much vodka, and her breasts, spilling out of pink pajamas, threatened my ability to. I was supposed to be excited, but I was bored and somewhat disgusted with myself, with her, with the whole business… and then whatever residual enthusiasm I felt for the venture dissipated, with shocking speed, as she nibbled at my ear and whispered–”You know, I’m on the pill…”

i'm glad i spelled seinfeld correctly. proof i guess against my better judgment i'm gen x. xpost w that thread.

a friend high-fived me tonight when i agreed that this show was my favourite tv right now.
we were at an indie-art-rock show.
i felt like i was on tv.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 3 May 2012 06:53 (eleven years ago) link

yeah haha i don't think this show is about profound moments because it's about the everyday life of certain twenty-somethings who while being somewhat-to-greatly self-conscious aren't all that self-aware. there's a difference, and so their profound moments don't necessarily seem all that profound even though they might be monumental in their lives at the time - i wouldn't call those moments trivial though. i mean, true, maybe in mainstream movies and tv, people have profound life-changing moments all the time, but that's the traditional nature of that stream of the medium. remember what a big deal it was that Seinfeld was "a show about nothing"? and it was, and that was great. but this show is about more than that.

i'm really looking forward to the whole "let's refer to these characters ONLY AS XXXXX'S DAUGHTER" thing to run its course.

Maybe because no one knows the name of the characters?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 May 2012 13:37 (eleven years ago) link

yes, it's so much easier to remember 'that is non-celebrity brian williams' daughter' every time you hear the name of the character 'marnie' or see 'olivia williams' in the credits than it is to remember that the character is named 'marnie' or the actress 'olivia williams'

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 13:41 (eleven years ago) link

alternatively, it's straight up misogynist bullshit

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

since when is brian williams not a celebrity?

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 13:42 (eleven years ago) link

okay, pretend i used kirke or dunham for my example instead

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 13:45 (eleven years ago) link

everyone calls dunham by her name tho and not the daughter of X.

Mordy, Thursday, 3 May 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

i've seen it done. it was more forced than the others, though.

i am genuinely curious! i think ilx needs to know more about how you feel about television

mordy i watched the first two and a half seasons and then found i didn't like it as much as i did when i started. i have been watching occasional episodes of this season and got fairly excited about the live one.

thomp, Thursday, 3 May 2012 14:20 (eleven years ago) link
