It made me realize that as long as they make me laugh, I don't really care how daft or annoying the characters are.

this show is so fucking OTM
― Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link
I had a *moment* watching the final scene bcz I have spent five minutes re-writing tweets/status updates and also danced alone in my room to Robyn on more than one occasion.

I'm guessing the 2nd and 3rd eps aren't on YT or HBO.com?

don't worry, they're being rush released onto dvd by criterion next week
― Neil Young’s social media channels (some dude), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 17:40 (eleven years ago) link
You can torrent them or probably find them on sidereel or something
― Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 17:45 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, this kind of lost me with the girl beelining to the nearest private room to rub one out cuz she was so turned on by the ridiculous art douche saying he’s such a MAN he will terrify her with his fucking skills. Also, the eyeroll-y “sometimes ya just gotta DANCE away the pain girlfrand” ending. Second episode was funny though. I like the goofy fuckbuddy character more than most. Mamet’s daughter’s character exists right now as a joke only, but I think she does a great job with it and is funny so I don’t care. British girl is zzzzz.

Do you have hbogo? Should be on there, if you are able to log in.
― Evan, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link
Or not do you have it, but can you log in I should say.
Yeah, but...there's something about this that bothers me. I feel like some aspects of this show might largely be super OTM in a really trivial way. Like, yeah, I can relate to that scene for sure...but the moments it evokes/recalls aren't particular noteworthy or profound. I mean, fair enough, tiny moments are worthy of consideration and transcription, but it feels a little like watching commercials for '80s toys and the comforting-yet-vacuous "Ooooh, I had that!" phenomenon or something.

The show’s treatment of condoms, STDs and abortion suggests the practical limits of an ethic of “safe sex” even among a population that’s been trained since puberty to practice it.
Monstro doesn't seem to have been trained particularly hard!

I'm probably doubling down on the "I'M OLD" tip here, but so much of the stuff that happens on this show feels tailor-made for this reaction:

After a viewing we have concluded that this show is reactionary "coming of age" narrative poison.
The Apatow propaganda machine continues unabated.
― Banaka™ (banaka), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link
Hopefully it will find a way to work in some level of sex positivity rather than being relentlessly negative and cynical on the topic.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 20:27 (eleven years ago) link
They keep fearing the consequences of sex, but yet they keep coming back to it.
Also, lol at the virgin speaking the most sensibly about hpv

I didn't say it was PROFOUND or anything but it was still something I found completely lovable and adorable; there was an earnestness about it that I really enjoyed. Also, there are much more less-trivial things on the show that I also can relate to quite a bit that make me really love it.
― Time, a group with Jam and Lewis (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link
yeah haha i don't think this show is about profound moments because it's about the everyday life of certain twenty-somethings who while being somewhat-to-greatly self-conscious aren't all that self-aware. there's a difference, and so their profound moments don't necessarily seem all that profound even though they might be monumental in their lives at the time - i wouldn't call those moments trivial though. i mean, true, maybe in mainstream movies and tv, people have profound life-changing moments all the time, but that's the traditional nature of that stream of the medium. remember what a big deal it was that Seinfeld was "a show about nothing"? and it was, and that was great. but this show is about more than that.

There's an argument that it was actually about the metastasizing of urban selfishness, too. (cuz, yknow, Larry David)
― World Congress of Itch (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 May 2012 00:31 (eleven years ago) link
There's an argument that there's no point being pedantic about the show's pithy way of marketing themselves as a counterpoint to the overly premise-driven sitcoms of the '80s.

a) that pretty much is what the 'next week on girls' clip at the end of this week's episode looks like yes b) i THOUGHT i was kidding about sabrina, i've seen a lot of episodes of that show and don't actually remember one about that
