Also I'm pretty sure from reading some of his books that half of Michael Medved's picks are because he just hates fun.

The Omen??? what in the name..

piscesx, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 07:48 (eleven years ago) link

Have definitely seen these ones, pretty much all great apart from maybe Myra Breckinridge. Alfredo Garcia and Marienbad would probably be in a list of my all-time top 100 films, were such a list to be made. Michael Medved is a tit.

2. Airport 1975 (1974)
4. The Ambushers (1967)
9. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974)
11. The Conqueror (1956)
13. Dick Tracy vs. Cueball (1946)
15. Eegah (1962)
16. Godzilla vs. Hedorah (aka Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster) (1971)
18. The Horror of Party Beach (1964)
20. Ivan the Terrible, Part 1 (1944)
21. Jamaica Inn (1939)
25. The Last Movie (1971)
26. Last Year at Marienbad (1961)
28. Myra Breckinridge (1970)
31. The Omen (1976)
35. Robot Monster (1953)
36. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)
43. The Terror of Tiny Town (1938)
49. Valley of the Dolls (1967)
50. Zabriskie Point (1970)

Loved this book so much when it came out--the whole aesthetic has been so fully absorbed into just about everything on the internet, I'm guessing a lot of the humour seems obvious now. (I believe it was primarily written by Harry Medved, with just an authorial "with" attached to his cousin and some other guy.) A quick count says I've seen nine of them. No vote, but by the time I did get around to seeing Marienbad and Alfredo Garcia, it was difficult for me, no matter what their virtues, not to be especially attuned to their more ludicrous aspects thanks to Medved's book.

Michael Medved's name isn't even found on the original cover:

He thought he would be "finished in Hollywood" if he was 'attached' to the book.

Then the book was a hit and people enjoyed groaning about the bad movies they were in / had to make, etc.

So begat:

Didn't know that...I wonder if it occured to him, just before he went public as a right-wing creep, that that might hurt his Hollywood standing too.

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 12:09 (eleven years ago) link

xp There's a chapter called 'The Most Unerotic Concept In Movies', including the films Chatterbox, Percy, and some movie about Jesus being gay.

oh and many of the movies from "The Fifty Worst Films Of All Time" appear in "The Golden Turkey Awards", so it's a bit of a rip-off.

'scuse me, while I Rim the Sky... (snoball), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 12:11 (eleven years ago) link

... I think that by then he wasn't 'getting ahead' in hollywood and thought, "hey, go for it"

Mark G, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 12:30 (eleven years ago) link

he's a complete arsehole this guy; big time creationist and all that.

i did love the books as a kid, there was a Golden Turkey sequel too

Not true in the least. They discuss scads more films (even a fake one) which more than justifies the purchase. Plus the several repeats are discussed in a different context.

J. Hoberman's classic "Bad Movies" essay from the same time was the smart version of all this, though.

I started with "Golden Turkey awards", got the "worst" about a year later. Then the "Vol2" came out, it was not as good but it was OK.

When MMed started becoming 'famous' more latterly, I was like that Father Ted sketch "Oh, you've decided to be a right wing aresnhl now, hows that goin for yez?"

.. because there wasn't really that much 'controversy' in his angles on the movies he mentioned (hon excep: the 'gay' jesus film, don't recall what he said there)

The main thing was
1) Wondering which was the 'bogus' film, I do know which one it is now
2) His extensive Ed Wood write-up, brilliant for the most part, except that he obviously had not seen some of them and was writing up someone else's stuff. Main clue was Bela Lugosi mis-pronouncing a line as "Don't worry, he's as harmless as kitchen" instead of "a kitten" and refusing to retake it so they had to go with it. Except that actually in the film there is no such mispronounciation and it is quite clearly "a kitten".

This list is better than 50 films chosen at random would be.

It seems there's a bias against films that are conceptually unusual: Ivan the Terrible, The Last Movie, Zabriskie Point, etc.

'valley of the dolls' is awesome.

^^^ this. Totally enjoyable.

My 3-year-old saw this page on the computer this morning, and now he wants a Robot Monster costume.

obv Medved was full-on dumbass long before he became a righty pundit.

I found this book in the town library in the late '70s and was skeptical of it even before I saw any of the films. Still have never caught The Conqueror tho.

Che! is a riot tho, at least when Palance is onscreen as Fidel.

#1 and #2 would make a little more sense as the "best" of these 50, but I think #3, #4 and #5 are probably arguably more "enjoyable."
