Ray Wise was great. Totally deflated Don. Seems to be becoming more and more apparent that Don's been coasting professionally for the last couple of years.

Didn't Bert make a similar comment re: biting the hand that feeds...? can't remember

Yeah, I thought at the time that Bert actually quit the company because of that ad.

yeah but it's the WHY exactly Bert was pissed that I can't remember (something about Don putting his own name on it, rather than the firm's?)

think it may have been the opposite, he put the firm's name on it and published it but didn't run it by anyone else?

i sort of want to attack Ray Wise and i have no idea why.

I've been looking for this clip from Robocop, where the bad guys are all blowing up cars with futuristic rocket guns and Ray is hanging out doing coke in the midst of all these explosions with the dad from That 70s Show. Sadly, it's not on youtube...

Great episode. Tableau at the end of the awards dinner was awesome.

It was. I wanted it to end on that, but then the actual ending was fun.

I liked it when Don said to Roger "People who haven't taken LSD have also had that insight" as a nod to Roger going on about his trip all the time.

i didn't enjoy the previous week's episode so much as everyone else seemed to, but this was in top form!

i couldn't figure out what megan was having misgiving about after landing the pitch, either. obviously though people are expecting her to follow the path peggy blazed and her gut is telling her to turn her back on it, for some reason. which will confuse and probably infuriate don.

Just discovered that John Slattery is only a year older than Johnny Depp!

i fucking hate glen. worst nepotism-based casting decision since godfather 3.

Slattery doesn't look much different from when he was on Ed, I don't think. I guess they both stopped aging at different times. xpost

i was struck by how old roger looked in the scene where he was flirting with megan's mom. maybe that's just me.

don's innovation on megan's pitch is that he includes the child and description of the child in each scene - it reminded me of the kid in the cage in his earlier commercial. something to unpack about don + childhood probably

also love how the wife of the heinz guy starts to convince him at the dinner ('that's exactly what you wanted...') and kinda betrays that she's maybe much more involved in the business than she lets on

peggy: "we don't need a piece of paper" from the city halls keeping us tied and true. my old man. keeping away my blues.

this was a great episode, but peggy is making less and less sense to me as a character this season

or perhaps, to me, peggy is making less and less sense as a character this season

yeah, i was kinda under the impression she wasn't so happy in her relationship. then she got all excited for his proposal? message: all girls want to be married at heart, even peggy?

She realized giving tuggers to totall strangers wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

but it wasn't a proposal.

she seemed to be bummed out at first about him not proposing, then got used to the idea.

classic misdirection btw: i assumed that joan would be wrong (since she's referring to an increasingly obsolete code of gendered communication) and that abe would be breaking up with peggy. but turns out joan was half-right.

I was cracking up at Peggy in that scene, definitely was expecting her to get dumped with that huge smile on her face.

"You still wanna eat?"
"...I do"

also lol at Peggy's "someone broke up with you?" to Joan

the writing in this episode was great.

peggy's mother's face at abe saying that peggy had made a ham "my favourite" and the subsequent confrontation at the end with peggy's mother was very clever the way it switched your sympathies.

megan's conversation at the awards ceremony with her father was also great.

several other great scenes which i'm blanking on.

i love julia ormond. i hope she's in it more.

although the peggy not-being-proposed-to scene felt a bit forced the following scene with peggy and joan was very touching.

Kinda nice to see Mona again.

What about Pete! I had just commented on how missing he was in this episode when he shows up and has that brilliant exchange with Emile. Harry also barely made the cut, but got to show up and be an ass for 20 seconds.

lol forgot about Harry finishing the story

pete's scene was great and unusually self-aware

i wasn't convinced. pete just wouldn't have the balls to do this.

roger being so fun with sally and then destroying her innocence was v heartbreaking

yeah, loved this. good rebuttal to my earlier kvetching about how pete seems at though he would suck at his job. demonstrated that he's a gifted flatterer.

i think she makes sense as a character. she's smart & ambitious, has a strong sense of her value as a thinker and doer, but is still rather insecure about her looks and place in the world. though she refuses to be bound by expectations, she can't help but see herself as "no prize" in relation to the likes of joan and megan.
