oh i'm sure we don't need ol' tommy neckbeard back for that to happen

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:23 (eleven years ago) link

thanks for all the moodyman recs, folks. silentintroduction is amazing, but i'm starting to think i need to track down the original 12" versions. a lot of the tracks i liked best when first exploring seem to be uncollected in their original form.

i'm sort of amazed that this dude isn't held up by mainstream music people as one of the greats of the last couple decades (in the way that like daft punk and radiohead are). these are some of the best sounds of any kind i've heard in a long, long while.

Excepting maybe Derrick May and Juan Atkins he's as heralded as it's possible to be for a dance producer who has never had any kind of populist success and doesn't actually hold any appeal from a pop/rock perspective.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:40 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i know. no hits, no mainstream visibility. still surprised, cuz this stuff seems very accessible to me.

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:48 (eleven years ago) link

tons of access points for curious newcomers: distinctive sound (even 10-20 years down the road), memorable compositions, emotionally direct & compelling music, lots of sonic variety, hard to pigeonhole, influential figure, interesting politics & personality, iconoclastic, fascinating human story

dude really needs & deserves a serious career overview. hell, i want one just for selfish reasons. maybe he doesn't want people to hear his music that way, i dunno...

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 05:02 (eleven years ago) link

this is going to be impossible and I dont think anyone will agree on the final results.

Moka, Thursday, 26 April 2012 08:05 (eleven years ago) link

unlike other ILM polls where everyone is complacent and in mutual agreement on every placing

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 09:51 (eleven years ago) link

tho the longer i've thought about this, the more it feels like "pick your favourite atom" or something, because some essence of a track is only released by its combination in a set. this feels like an unnatural way (to me) of thinking about this music.

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 09:54 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah and for that reason I suspect it's going to skew towards big anthems but that was probably going to be the case anyway.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:09 (eleven years ago) link

more than most kinds of music it makes no sense for this tho. have enjoyed the introductory bits of this thread but can't see myself voting now, don't feel like i've got a rubric for doing so

ooh that reminds me:

Actress: Hubble

EDB, Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:36 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry.. the 'Thriller - Hubble' is I nominated is by Actress. As there was no identification on the 12" I entered it as just "Thriller" which I know is the label name.. Discogs now has it under 'Actress'..

there's no way i'm voting - don't vote in polls anyway but the idea of a "best of" i really don't identify with - that idea of "these are the things you should hear" is just kinda alien to me, and yeah the list will just end with booka shade and mouth to mouth near the top when be honest with yourself when was the last time you played either

Petar Dundov - Oasis

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link

voting is fun, especially if you don't dwell on it to the point where it doesn't make sense, just go with whatever impulse you have when you look at the list of nominees. i find it weird that people have enough time to read the thread and wring their hands about the whole process but not enough to just vote in the damn thing so we have some interesting results for people to argue about. i have no idea what the lurker factor will be like on this poll, i'm so confused about ilx-lurker-electro-taste after Autechre and Mouse on Mars won those other weird polls.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:37 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not too bothered about voting or seeing how the voting plays out. I am interested in seeing nominations. Discovering new music and rediscovering music that I haven't heard for a while is what I'm here for. I think dance music is quite unique because people tend to get into it fairly intensely and then fall out of love with it. Just my theory maybe but people attach the music to going out clubbing and lose interest when they slow down going out. Nominations can represent eras.

mmmm, Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:47 (eleven years ago) link

oh man nv and coal aren't voting??

this poll is ruined for me

:-(

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

lol

i'm not dismissing the poll i just will never have any sane way of voting

afaict, none have a thorough, well-curated career overview compilation available. seems like craig's recent sessions remix collection for !K7's about as close as it comes. half surprised that soul jazz or a similar label hasn't undertaken something like this - for moodymann at least.

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 15:31 (eleven years ago) link

the 20 Years Metroplex comp is a reasonable overview of Juan Atkins' first 2 decades but nuts to a thorough well-curated etc tbh

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

on a serious note and fwiw i don't really understand NV's reasons for not voting.

my criteria for voting is the same as it would be for any other poll - assuming i could only take 50 of these tracks on an ipod to a desert island, which 50 would i take? a lot of stuff on this list i probably wouldn't listen to in any context other than a mix (and a lot of these i don't like and would probably never listen to)

but the 50 on my shortlist i have certainly listened to, by themselves, definitely more or as much as any other individual song from any song-oriented genre i like

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

(from the 00s)

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

you should just vote for the songs that will annoy that greatest amount of ppl

Lamp, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

should they place

Lamp, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

tbh when there's a subject i'm into i forget for a while why i rarely vote in polls which is that mostly i don't think in terms of lists and charts. but listening back to stuff for this particular poll i cdn't separate a lot of the individual tracks from the contexts in which i'd hear them - which is true of a lot of music for me anyway so - it just felt nonsensical to say "this is my favourite" when i'm much more a "this here right now is my favourite" listener. and for some reason picking "what i like right now" feels wronger for dance music because i feel it as much more of a continuum - i think i'd find it easier to pick favourite albums because they feel more monolithic and self-contained.

as i say, none of this is a critique of the poll process, the run down and the left-field choices are all interesting to me. it's more something i discovered about how i felt about dance music - and i ought to add as a predominantly armchair listener for the span of this poll - while i was thinking about what to vote for.

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

"this here right now is my favourite"

how i feel about mixing also..

coal, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

think moody would be a bit funny about licensing his tracks for comps like that, did everyone see the rbma academy interview? i'm sure he spoke about that stuff in there. also his "hit" albums, kind of function like retrospectives anyway.

anyway, gonna vote in this poll, gonna vote for 50 things i really like.

Crackle Box, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

the 20 Years Metroplex comp is a reasonable overview of Juan Atkins' first 2 decades but nuts to a thorough well-curated etc tbh

good point, missed that. a well-chosen two disc comp is thorough enough for my purposes, and that one looks great. oop though, and seems to have had pretty low visibility outside the established scene?

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

there are definitely some tracks on this poll that have that "this here right now is my favorite" vibe - particularly a lot of the post-2010 stuff and post-dubstep stuff seems to me like something i may not be into five or six years down the line (cf 2step, most of which, though not all of which, i used to consume w/ a passion but which now mostly sounds badly dated and fluffy to my ears)

i'm mostly voting for things i've been listening to for years and years without getting tired of them, stuff like "live goes on" and "miura" and "poney pt 1" and "r&b drunkie" which just never seem old and never leave my ipod and always put a huge grin on my face even though it's been five or ten years since i first heard them

yeah, i wondered about that. just bugs me on "discovering" MM that so many of the tracks that first caught my ear aren't officially available anywhere.

xxp to cntndrsr

snark aside i guess what wd be the point of trying to push Juan Atkins to people outside of the "established scene"? it's a pretty big scene at this point. and Tresor was a big label within those terms.

re: 2step i mean that not all of it sounds dated to me - smokin' beats "dreams" never gets old! but a lot of the stuff i used to really like - like ed case and todd edwards - i basically can't listen to anymore.

weirdly enough speed garage sounds as fresh to me as it ever did.

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

i find some genres go in and out of sounding dated, depends on contextual stuff in the present? even the most of its moment synth sound sometimes gets reinvigorated by a new unforeseen connection.

xp to contenderizer

he does super short runs and loads of different versions of the same track afaik. just to fuck with you, haha

man, the first time i heard moodymann i was taking some records over to a friends house in a bit of a shit part of leeds, i got mugged and beat up. records stolen and the dude i was going to see (c0mfy pau1, might post/read here, get in touch) gave me some pain relief and i sat back and closed my eyes and that beat on runaway was pulsing though my swollen face and it was a pretty awesome listening experience tbh
