What am brew day?

my buddy's dad is a super serious home brewer. like, his garage is given over to it. every couple months it is brew day, wherein we go and "help" him brew by which I mean drink what's last of the last batch and eat jalapeño stuffed pheasant breast wrapped in bacon

I've decided that brew day is the most important holliday and it happens randomly and all year round

tell your friend's dad to do fireworks and someone start writing an anthem

brew day is the kind of holiday that even a shiftless pinko heathen like me can get behind

literally just got a text informing me that brew day is this coming saturday

imma track down some pics, the brewing apparatus is nuts. he actually runs tubing from the garage into the basement to fill the buckets. there are like thirty rocket kegs down there

this man is an ICU doc btw, so this is serious business

that is so fucking cool. brewing scratches all of my weird never get to do it itches wrt closet chemistry geekery, and creates a situation where me + a couple peeps basically have to hang out and yammer at each other for 4 hours w/o the distraction of bar/party/show/whatever. plus it makes alcohol that i can put in my brain. its such an ultra satisfying thing to me.

i should start a homebrewing thread. maybe there is one.

I've got a kit that was bequeathed to me, and never used. Hmmm

we currently have an old english ipa and a bitter in the fermenters. the ipa is measuring at 9.6% potential alcohol. it has (this is literal, not figurative btw) A POUND of hops in it for a 4.5 gallon batch. even the furious clone we did only had 4 oz of hops. i fully expect it to hurt to drink it and am soooooo excited to find out.

also you should talk to my dad, he's been toying with the idea of doing a beer in addition to his wine adventures

the prob with the crazy ipa is that it takes forever to be ready - iirc its 2 weeks in the primary fermenter, 4-6 weeks in the secondary, and then 6 weeks of bottle conditioning? and those are minimums. i mean theres stuff that takes a year so i shouldnt complain but i want to drink it now

i forgot about the wine thing, how is that going?

He's doing a red wine right now; I can't remember if the grapes were pinot noir- or malbec-related. He's been geeking out over the fermentation process and every time we see him he brings samplers from his various batches for us to taste. I think the end result is going to be a pretty robust red wine reminiscent of a strong pinot noir, verging on cabernet.

wine making seems way more visionary and long-term than brewing

He's got 200+ vines growing next to our house surrounded by an electric fence to discourage deer. I recommend calling him up and asking if you can swing by to check it out because it's kind of crazy amazeballs.

yeah growing grapes for wine is pretty next level. i have considered planting my own hops but A) i am a crap gardener and hate gardening b) my neighbors are stupid and old and would prob just assume i was growing dope in my backyard

Next time I visit them you need to swing by, it's super worth seeing

brew day is in HDSN but we're in the same idiot rural ecosystem so i think it scans

my fiance bought me a bbgun & now we keep our bbguns in the trunk for impromptu good times. she is from mass, by way of bama, where she first learned to shoot shotgun and .22 after burying a pig and some coals in the ground.

Thing to remember: doctors have heard crazier/weirder stuff than you can dream of. (I feel like gbx can probably also speak to this? - and wish for time off and a way to get you here so we could have a random story telling session with you all and him to persuade you. But trust me on this.)
