Good job your husband on the shoe choices, btw. I just looked up that comfort brand.

how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

Oh it's so bright and cute! I love knife pleats. I worry about sitting on them all day flattening them out, but they seem to do okay...?

Yeah the Naots are mostly pretty terrible looking, but I have bad feet and a bad back, give a girl a break!

The pleats are what made me think of you! The fabric is actually kind of substantial, I don't really know how to describe it, but it holds the pleats really well despite sitting-upon.

quincie, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

Ann Taylor is the other Ann, but daria-g has forever turned me against that brand. . .

quincie, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

If I had tons o' wardrobe money I would have nothing but custom-made suits. I love beautifully made suits, but they are rare as hens teeth in my price range.

Hugo Boss and Akris sometimes have stuff I like, but then I look at the price tag and walk away.

quincie, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link

a.p.c. sweaters and cardigans and trousers and really everything
happy socks
band of outsiders shirts and sometimes sweaters (:/)
comme des garcon once but not anymore but i still wear lots of older pieces
rag + bone for shorts and trousers
lots of oliver spencer preppy basics, slim trousers and fair isle sweaters and baggy cardigans
vintage levis for jeans and cords although its hard to find now for cheap
i still have three pairs of nudie jeans
i have a couple of filson bags
theres stuff like kitson or edward green or sibling or norse projects where i only have one or two of their pieces but would love more, if they were cheaper
i went through a serious paul smith phase and his mtm shirts fit nicely but ive kinda gotten tired of the forced whimsy
i also used to own like 9 pairs of nike sb mids but ive sold them all since i dont think i can pull them off anymore. the only nikes i kept are some jordan iv reissues
i like shoes too much to only buy one or two brands but i have three pairs of cole haans and three pairs of bob cousy los
theres also some nameless brand of cashmere sweaters that my grandmother has been buying for me since i was 14, i have probably 10 of them they dont have a label in them but theyre heavy and soft and perfect, probably my favorite pieces of clothing, i am wearing one rn

nudie jeans

lol is this a brand?

I have only owned one suit in my life. I bought it for a job interview when I was 21. I've always worked in business casual emphasis on the casual since so I've never needed another.

Lamp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

trouser brands that don't go up to 40.

I'm a 30" and i can't wear Nudie :(

Just like you, except hot (ShariVari), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link

i will follow my favorite brands into weird and dark places

for example, i got a line on this ridiculous corduroy jacket for about 1/4 of the price listed, please talk me out of it before i do something stupid

― the late great, Tuesday, April 24, 2012 3:11 PM (2 hours ago) Bookmark

I like this jacket because (and no offense intended!) it reminds me of a signature piece of clothing an anime character might have

dayo, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

lamp - i can't wear apc, band of outsiders, cdg, rag+bone

even if i buy XL, everything from those brands is too tapered and skinny. those are popular brands w/ skinny dudes and asians because they look nice on smaller people but if you're tall and broad-shouldered and long-limbed SUPER-MUSCULAR like me (i also have long arms) they are always too tight and short.

i do have one nice XL apc dress shirt that i got for $50 at a barney's sale but i can't button the neck and the sleeves only go about 3" from my wrists, so if i wear it to work i wear a t-shirt underneath and i always roll up the sleeves.

the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link

Man, shopping is serious business for you guys. I don't have enough patience to seek out sales. I think that's what I must be doing wrong. Gonna cultivate some.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

uh my wife (ex) dragged me to that one

dayo i like that jacket because it reminds me of the kind of stuff my mom would buy for me in 1981 at fedco

the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

i don't really shop sales but i will admit shopping is serious business for me

I am asian and have trouble fitting into most skinny jeans because I have thunder thighs iirc

dayo, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:28 (eleven years ago) link

big bottom bird soup

maybe i should have said those are popular brands w/ some skinny dudes and some asian people

the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

well if u say x is popular with y it doesnt mean all y like x

imo if u say x is popular w y on ilx cya

the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:37 (eleven years ago) link

oh late great i c - yah i get what you mean, band of outsiders tend to fit a little larger than the others but they can all be p unforgiving, like i have to wear a L/XL for sure. oh to be one of those urban gnomes...

having thought abt this btw i probably own more american apparel t-shirts (all crew neck, most pocket front) and lacoste polos than anything but a.p.c. stuff

Lamp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

haha also good lookin out @ seandalai and jim

Lamp, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

ah god my gf has ruined like six of my lacoste polos by putting them in the dryer.

they shrink like two sizes in length and one in width so even if i buy size 8 to be able to use the dryer the shirts would still be too wide

i stick to polo polos now because they're pre-shrunk

the late great, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

lol urban gnomes

wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

Man, shopping is serious business for you guys. I don't have enough patience to seek out sales.

I only go shopping twice a year - January and July sales - so much not effort at all!

As a skinny guy I can say life isn't necessarily any easier...especially for shirts/jackets lots of brands' smallest sizes turn out to be too big for me.

sorry about the ann taylor thing quincie! if i could go in there and get a work-appropriate skirt or jacket i probably would, because it is *so difficult* to find basics without a lot of unnecessary detail. their particular cuts never fit me right though

i usually stick to apc, j crew (perfect tees, shorts.. sometimes a cardigan or jacket but the quality has gone down a lot imo). theory, some elie tahari for work (the simple styles only, nothing with a lot of detail on it). also like some things from isabel marant etoile and gerard darel depending on the style and fit. rag and bone chinos, current/elliott jeans are the best

girl by band of outsiders is nice, would buy if/when i find something i'd wear a lot + at a sale price i could sort of afford. same for vanessa bruno/vanessa bruno athe, chie mihara and sigerson morrison shoes, hope (stockholm), paul and joe

xpost loool are you rob gronkowski

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 03:36 (eleven years ago) link

Damn, I need to come into some money or something. I just looked up some of those and they're totally lovely but I just can't imagine paying $80 for a tee or $300 for a pair of pants. I realize they're probably investment pieces that will last a long time but it just seems like so much to part with for one item.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 03:48 (eleven years ago) link

lol i feel you - i don't know why i have such a hard time spending money on clothes, when i'm happy to drop a couple hundred bucks on a handbag. my style/brand is basically .... target.

just1n3, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 04:00 (eleven years ago) link

i think a part of it is that i don't feel super confident about my style or what looks good.

just1n3, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 04:01 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I'm totally the same with bags, jewelry, and occasionally shoes. Those are the things I'll splash out on but for some reason it's really hard for me to pay a lot for clothes, especially basics, even though logically I know it's probably made better and will last longer.

just1n3, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 04:14 (eleven years ago) link

i have def overspent sometimes! but i rarely/never pay full retail - a lot of things i have bought off ebay at super low prices. there are a handful of sellers who list new sale stock from department stores (bloomingdales for instance). i always wear the same size in a couple of labels and do a saved search if there is a certain kind of thing i want. it'll show up eventually. my favorite theory blazer cost about $50 new with tags for instance. got the rag & bone chinos at barney's co-op on an end of season sale, they were the same price as gap by then. the cost is more in the time it takes me to find something i like; i finally bought a short trench for spring, it took lots and lots and lots of searching to find the perfect convergence of label + simple style + acceptable color + relatively low price. it was a pain, but i guess i won't have to bother again for like 10 years.

i admit to buying a couple of $100 tees from apc, though i have worn them constantly & they are still in perfect shape

on the other hand i don't have any expensive handbags or fine jewelry. i like jerome dreyfuss and vanessa bruno, but i'm not willing to spend the money, and my jewelry is almost all vintage that i got as gifts from friends/family.

Daria - those are good tips. I think what I need to remind myself of is this part: "the cost is more in the time it takes me to find something i like . . . it was a pain, but i guess i won't have to bother again for like 10 years". I've never bought anything off ebay clothes or otherwise but I'm going to have a look soon.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 April 2012 10:55 (eleven years ago) link

i basically only buy totally non trend-specific stuff nowadays - plain dress shirts in solid whites and blues and small ginghams, overshirts in same, plain polos and tees in white (red and navy for polos), solid black or navy or grey sweaters and jackets and sweatshirts. jeans and cotton trousers in unwashed basic colors (indigo, khaki, green). same w shorts.

nothing skinny, nothing baggy, nothing that can't be matched with everything else in the closet. nothing that it's easy to buy cashmere sweaters when i

I have a Theory blazer that someone left at a party once. I wore the shit out of it, is the problem. It kinda looks sad now. I've tried to embrace the sadness in a hi/lo way--great clothing, loved to pieces--but it never seems to work on me.

what's the big deal with uniqlo? Their stuff looks really generic and boring.

I guess I was super into H&M for a while when they first opened one here, but their stuff seemed more fun and slightly "trashy"

outside of thrift store/random Ross finds, my current brands are:

Target
Sketchers
Liz Claiborne
stuff from Modcloth
and I recently discovered this place which has stuff that seems a lot better made than most Modcloth stuff:

With ModCloth, as with most things, you get what you pay for. You can't expect the cute frock you picked up for $40 to stand up to a $400 Tracy Reese.
