thx for the kenny dixon tip

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:45 (eleven years ago) link

Srsly though:

- firstly, check out Moodymann albums - A Silent Introduction and Black Mahogani being most key, then Mahogany Brown and Forevernevermore.

- Theo Parrish is not exactly like Moodymann but they're mentioned in the same breath for a reason; their styles complement one another. Get Parallel Dimensions first and foremost, then First Floor. For a third pic I would go with the Rotating Assembly album.

- Norma Jean Bell is a saxophonist/producer who worked a lot with Moodymann, and her album Come Into My Room is (to be reductionist) basically Moodymann with added sax.

- Andres is another Moodymann protege and his self-titled album is like a short, focused Moodymann album which I probably listen to more than any Moodymann other than ASI and BM.

- Trus'me is basically a Moodymann clone but that doesn't change the fact that his debut Working Nights is about on a level with ASI and BM (in my opinion).

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 03:59 (eleven years ago) link

Wow that's a huge statement (re: trusme). Dunno though, never got the urge to listen to it. I remember one ace track from it though

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 08:56 (eleven years ago) link

Make that behind ASI and BM, but ahead of FNM and MB (and other Moodymann albums).

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 09:37 (eleven years ago) link

new andres is good

best moodymann is this http://www.discogs.com/Kenny-Dixon-Jr-Soul-Sounds/release/4289

coal, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 09:37 (eleven years ago) link

Almost forgot… Kavinsky - Nightcall

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 11:08 (eleven years ago) link

Kenny Dixon is Moodymann it needs to be said.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 24 April 2012 11:29 (eleven years ago) link

Kavinsky - Nightcall

electro pop / synth pop, sorry..

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 13:06 (eleven years ago) link

also check this out, its like a detroit supergroup thing with kdj, theo parrish, rick wilhite, etc. surprisingly great and cohesive for how many people were working on it.

i agree that silentintroduction is the best

but i would rank mahogany brown as my second - its so murky, dusty and funky. i think it also has the widest emotional range and the most sui generis tracks

after that it's black mahogany and forevernevermore. i think silence in the secret garden is kinda weak

contenderizer if you wanna hear other ppl using vocal samples of moodymann/kenny dixon talking, listen to these:

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

I love all of those! Except I have already nominated "As I" I think.

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

Oh wait maybe you meant "Tell Me"?

Tim F, Wednesday, 25 April 2012 23:38 (eleven years ago) link

If the nomination deadline is April 30 when are ballots going to be due? I ask because I'll be travelling from April 30 to May 12 and want to earn my ivotedtoday.jpg

EDB, Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:04 (eleven years ago) link

may 1st is the nomination deadline, definitely at least 2 weeks for the voting window if not longer

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:13 (eleven years ago) link

probably take us a week to narrow down the nominations list and let everyone debate about the knife and whatnot

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

wow can't wait.

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 April 2012 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

me neither man, me neither

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 02:09 (eleven years ago) link

can we get pipecock back to morbs up the results thread?

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 26 April 2012 02:57 (eleven years ago) link

oh i'm sure we don't need ol' tommy neckbeard back for that to happen

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:23 (eleven years ago) link

thanks for all the moodyman recs, folks. silentintroduction is amazing, but i'm starting to think i need to track down the original 12" versions. a lot of the tracks i liked best when first exploring seem to be uncollected in their original form.

i'm sort of amazed that this dude isn't held up by mainstream music people as one of the greats of the last couple decades (in the way that like daft punk and radiohead are). these are some of the best sounds of any kind i've heard in a long, long while.

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:30 (eleven years ago) link

Excepting maybe Derrick May and Juan Atkins he's as heralded as it's possible to be for a dance producer who has never had any kind of populist success and doesn't actually hold any appeal from a pop/rock perspective.

Tim F, Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:40 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, i know. no hits, no mainstream visibility. still surprised, cuz this stuff seems very accessible to me.

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 04:48 (eleven years ago) link

tons of access points for curious newcomers: distinctive sound (even 10-20 years down the road), memorable compositions, emotionally direct & compelling music, lots of sonic variety, hard to pigeonhole, influential figure, interesting politics & personality, iconoclastic, fascinating human story

dude really needs & deserves a serious career overview. hell, i want one just for selfish reasons. maybe he doesn't want people to hear his music that way, i dunno...

THE KITTEN TYPE (contenderizer), Thursday, 26 April 2012 05:02 (eleven years ago) link

this is going to be impossible and I dont think anyone will agree on the final results.

Moka, Thursday, 26 April 2012 08:05 (eleven years ago) link

unlike other ILM polls where everyone is complacent and in mutual agreement on every placing

akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 26 April 2012 08:47 (eleven years ago) link

A few more noms:

Dan Electro - Down Is the Power
Norma Jean Bell - Mystery
San Proper & Steven de Peven - Hupsers & Kletsers for Life (Original)
Sydenham And Ferrer - Sandcastles (Afterlife Mix)

Tuomas, Thursday, 26 April 2012 09:48 (eleven years ago) link

Superpitcher - Fieber

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 09:51 (eleven years ago) link

tho the longer i've thought about this, the more it feels like "pick your favourite atom" or something, because some essence of a track is only released by its combination in a set. this feels like an unnatural way (to me) of thinking about this music.

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 09:54 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah and for that reason I suspect it's going to skew towards big anthems but that was probably going to be the case anyway.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:09 (eleven years ago) link

more than most kinds of music it makes no sense for this tho. have enjoyed the introductory bits of this thread but can't see myself voting now, don't feel like i've got a rubric for doing so

seapunk run. run punk run! (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:12 (eleven years ago) link

Sound Stream - Makin' Love
Thriller - Hubble
Turner - My Aeroplane Mania
Turner - My Aeroplane Mania (Baby Ford Remix)
Golden Boy feat. Miss Kittin - Rippin Kittin (Turner Remix)
Gabriel Ananda - Doppelwhipper Live

Loco Dice - Menina Brasiliera

i wonder how many songs from this list were already nominated

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_electronic_dance_songs_2000s.html

cock chirea, Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:21 (eleven years ago) link

ooh that reminds me:

Actress: Hubble

EDB, Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:36 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry.. the 'Thriller - Hubble' is I nominated is by Actress. As there was no identification on the 12" I entered it as just "Thriller" which I know is the label name.. Discogs now has it under 'Actress'..

mmmm, Thursday, 26 April 2012 10:51 (eleven years ago) link

aw man! "down is the power"!

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 11:40 (eleven years ago) link

I'll nominate the following from the list posted above:

Lasgo - Something
IIO - Rapture

Also:

Peter Visti - Dolly
Yelle - A Cause des Garcons (tepr remix)

Just like you, except hot (ShariVari), Thursday, 26 April 2012 11:53 (eleven years ago) link

*waits for Durr Durr Durr to appear and ban the Rapture*

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Thursday, 26 April 2012 11:57 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah and for that reason I suspect it's going to skew towards big anthems but that was probably going to be the case anyway.

there's no way i'm voting - don't vote in polls anyway but the idea of a "best of" i really don't identify with - that idea of "these are the things you should hear" is just kinda alien to me, and yeah the list will just end with booka shade and mouth to mouth near the top when be honest with yourself when was the last time you played either

coal, Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:03 (eleven years ago) link

Petar Dundov - Oasis

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link

voting is fun, especially if you don't dwell on it to the point where it doesn't make sense, just go with whatever impulse you have when you look at the list of nominees. i find it weird that people have enough time to read the thread and wring their hands about the whole process but not enough to just vote in the damn thing so we have some interesting results for people to argue about. i have no idea what the lurker factor will be like on this poll, i'm so confused about ilx-lurker-electro-taste after Autechre and Mouse on Mars won those other weird polls.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:37 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not too bothered about voting or seeing how the voting plays out. I am interested in seeing nominations. Discovering new music and rediscovering music that I haven't heard for a while is what I'm here for. I think dance music is quite unique because people tend to get into it fairly intensely and then fall out of love with it. Just my theory maybe but people attach the music to going out clubbing and lose interest when they slow down going out. Nominations can represent eras.

mmmm, Thursday, 26 April 2012 12:47 (eleven years ago) link

oh man nv and coal aren't voting??

this poll is ruined for me

:-(

the late great, Thursday, 26 April 2012 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

lol

i'm not dismissing the poll i just will never have any sane way of voting
