believe the Buick belonged to Binder, Edwards & Vaughan, swinging London art/design trio. They organised the happening, rave, whathaveyou that the Beatles made unreleased freakout Carnival of Light for.

don't blame me, "Tired" was practically the only big ubiquitous US hit of their that didn't make my ballot

no way did i vote for that snoozer either

I did!

Along with 20 other people (out of 41).

I also have to admit that it's hard to shake the association with cat food or whatever consumer product stole the soul of that song.

Ah, and there's 'Lola'!

That "One For The Road" video is missing the intro, where they start the song and then Ray says "We're not going to play that one tonight." I remember as an eleven or twelve-year-old feeling like that was the end of the world, like the band was refusing to play THE BEST SONG OF ALL TIME. And then this utter relief when he decided it would be ok if we'd just sing along...

Man, that Glastonbury performance. Just days of Pete Quaife died. Days and See My Friends were utterly devastating.

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

Also, I was tired and hungover and my wife and one of my closest friends have both said this would be played at their funeral so I was having problems holding it together.

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

The first thing from my ballot to chart since 'Big Sky' all the way down there at #11.

This was my #1, and I can't help but get the feeling that it has been robbed. Just knowing that 'Waterloo Sunset' will chart higher than this is enough to make me have a massive fucking sulk.

iirc, Ray milked that schtick for the better part of a decade. Or he'd start "Lola," but then they'd play "Apeman" instead or something.

Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 23 April 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

Waterloo Sunset = better song, so it's not worth sulking over.

I completely disagree. 'Waterloo Sunset' has always been one of those songs that, for me, goes in the 'I like it, it's okay, I see what the fuss is about but it doesn't have the same level of impact for me as it does for others' pile. Whereas 'Days' is a song that, as someone rightly said above, really is something else. 'Waterloo Sunset' didn't make my ballot.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

Is there a reason this is so high? ie, is there any context that people would have heard it outside of the Arthur album?

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

I voted for both, but Days felt more obligatory whereas Waterloo Sunset is just a sublime example of 1967 rock craftsmanship.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

YES! 'Shangri-La'! I was giving up all hope of this song appearing... turns out my #4 is also ILM's #4. For me, this is the absolute highlight of the 'Arthur' album. I'm unsure as to whether it's better than 'Days', but at the same time I'm very happy that this song has placed so high.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, I misremembered...I actually didn't vote for Days. No shame in my game, though.

Yeah, it's featured on CD 2 of 'The Ultimate Collection', which was a Best Of that came out in 2002.

Reverse "Waterloo" and "Days" in the above, and that's exactly how I feel. "Days" didn't make my ballot.

Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link

Waterloo Sunset was my #1 and Days my #2. I've always thought of them his two emotional heavy-hitters - big-hearted songs from a not naturally big-hearted man - so I'm kind of surprised anyone would love one and be lukewarm on the other.

And I have been called "The Appetite" (DL), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

The Ultimate Collection is my main exposure to the band and i had never had any idea that "Shangri-La" was thought of as a standout or notable song

Poor Turrican (some dude), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

the idea that ppl only vote for songs they consider sufficiently 'notable' is rather baffling. i put 'shangri-la' at the top of my list bcz it is basically the most moving song i've ever heard.

could victoria take it? prob not right

iatee, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

jesus that's not what i was saying at all, just that i knew it neither as a hit i'd encountered out in the world, nor a title i'd heard referenced by fans a lot but hadn't heard on the radio (like, say, "Waterloo Sunset"), nor as a song i naturally gravitated to as a favorite (xpost)

Poor Turrican (some dude), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:15 (twelve years ago) link

Victoria finishing 1 would be an upset. I'm thrilled it's this high...unless it's shut out.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 April 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

Re: Shangri-La: it's a nice touch that their best single, all about reaching the top and not getting any higher, didn't chart. I had it at #1 and didn't rank Waterloo at all...

I guess I can see why it would be quite surprising when you put it like that. For me, all it pretty much boils down to is that 'Days' is a song that has always meant a hell of a lot to me, whereas 'Waterloo Sunset' has never meant anything to me. I do wish that 'Waterloo Sunset' had the same level of impact on me as it seems to for others, but it just doesn't.

'Victoria' at #2!?? Now there's an unexpected surprise! I love this song to bits, and I had a feeling it would chart but I never would have expected it to come this high in a million years! This was my #13.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

The B-side of it is probably my least favourite song on 'Arthur', though.
