how does one get from brooklyn (e.g. around atlantic ave station) to la guardia at 5am? taxi yes? will i be able to hail on round there or should i book a car service?
― caek, Friday, 27 April 2012 10:29 (twelve years ago) link
based on my experience this winter: car service
― catbus otm (gbx), Friday, 27 April 2012 12:16 (twelve years ago) link
yeah take a car http://www.yelp.com/biz/new-bell-car-service-brooklyn

― caek, Friday, 27 April 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link
joe will you be in ny in early june? if not why not.
prob not, because i am indecisive i guess
― lag∞n, Friday, 27 April 2012 15:49 (twelve years ago) link
car service remains a mystery to me even though i have been in a car service car before
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 27 April 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link
i understand taxis
theyre like taxis w/o meters and its illegal to hail them u call them instead
― lag∞n, Friday, 27 April 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago) link
that info will soon be out of date via new laws fyi
so you negotiate price when you get in them? and they're only in brooklyn/queens/not-manhattan? but sometimes there are car stands, like taxi stands, aren't there? i feel like i've taken a regular taxi from brooklyn to manhattan and i definitely have from manhattan to brooklyn.
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 27 April 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link
regular taxis can go in the boroughs atm and can be found sometimes but it's generally more profitable for them to stay in manhattan
― iatee, Friday, 27 April 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link
but because there is a limit to the number of medallions, the boroughs are underserved, so you have a huge mostly-gonna-look-the-other-way black market, but as jh0 said they are fixing this problem by creating borough-specific taxis
― iatee, Friday, 27 April 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link
they have them in all the boroughs tho obvs theyre more key in places where no yellow cabs dare tread, the price is somewhat negotiable, and yeah there are car stands some places like outside of the supermarket or w/e you can go to the storefront dispatch place to get one too also people just hail them all the time even tho its against the rules
there are often taxis around caeks departure point but prob not so much at 5am
― lag∞n, Friday, 27 April 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago) link
negotiate price BEFORE you get in them btw

Seems so unregulated that I couldn't quite believe it of NYC, tho I guess people get ripped off by legit taxis too. I've heard many "dodgy mini-cab" stories re: London.

is there a particularly good iphone app for the MTA/subway? offline maps, route planner, etc. there seem to be hundreds of them.
― caek, Friday, 1 June 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link
Uh I don't know because a) I have an android, and b) I don't use a route planner, I just look at a map.
― how did I get here? why am I in the whiskey aisle? this is all so (Laurel), Friday, 1 June 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link
you sort of dont need one, theres maps all over. if you are going to get one id recommend something that shows you an actual map of the city with subways laid over it, since the official MTA map isnt really accurate aboveground
― max, Friday, 1 June 2012 13:39 (eleven years ago) link
hmm yeah i guess. i just don't have brooklyn very clear in my head, so something offline would be good. and the subway is a struggle for the first few days every time.
all set with fancy new digs via airbnb crediting me with $$$ for screwing me around : )
― caek, Friday, 1 June 2012 13:49 (eleven years ago) link
Hopstop is probably the best route planner. You would need to be online but if you're doing the subway on the weekends an offline map isn't going to help much, you'd be screwed without knowing the weekend service changes.http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hopstop/id303217144?mt=8
For aboveground I just use google maps.
― dmr, Friday, 1 June 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link
Hopstop is a little bit crazy, though. One of the main roads near my place has a bend in it, and Hopstop directions treat it like a turn. "Turn right onto Xxxx" is very confusing when you are already ON Xxxx.
