40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 13 April 2012 12:34 (twelve years ago) link

i've never figured out how to enter rebus squares in across lite. it must be possible though?

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 13 April 2012 12:35 (twelve years ago) link

NYT does rebus puzzles w/some regularity. And yeah, I'm not sure how to enter those squares in Across Lite, either.

Btw, theme of the AV Club puzzle this week, constructed by Matt Jones, (MINOR SPOILER AHOY) had to do with my employer, weirdly enough.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Friday, 13 April 2012 12:54 (twelve years ago) link

Did not do this puzzle yet, so avoiding any more spoilers.

For rebus entry in Across Lite use Edit> Insert > Multiple Letters. Crossword Solver has a REBUS button, and for some phone apps you double click on the square.

Rebuses typically but not always will appear in the Times on Thursday, I think. A few years ago they stopped doing them at the ACPT because they caused too many scoring problems, but other tournaments have them.

Thunderword ESQ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 13 April 2012 13:22 (twelve years ago) link

OK, I just did it. Considered mentioning that fact to jaymc then thought better of it, but now that I read his post I see that he mentioned it himself.

Thunderword ESQ (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 13 April 2012 13:53 (twelve years ago) link

totally thought of jaymc when i did that puzzle

Awesome!

The Unbassful Serpent (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 13 May 2012 02:53 (eleven years ago) link

What's the deal with the missing scores on Puzzle 2 and 3? Did you meet any famous xword people? Also I see that Andrea Carl Michaels both wrote a puzzle and competed, as she did at Lollapuzzoola.

The Unbassful Serpent (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 13 May 2012 03:00 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry, Andrea Carla Michaels

The Unbassful Serpent (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 13 May 2012 03:03 (eleven years ago) link

Also, slight weird thing that website has summary info from last year but scores from today.

The Unbassful Serpent (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 13 May 2012 03:04 (eleven years ago) link

yeah apparently those are not the legit scores, because i got an email today saying i came in 15th place overall (!!!)

the final puzzle before the finals was a group thing, and i got paired up with andrea!

madame boo berry (donna rouge), Sunday, 13 May 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

That's great news. Does that mean you came in fourth in the Rookie division?

I talked to Andrea for a split second at Lollapuzzoola. She seemed pretty nice.

The Unbassful Serpent (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 13 May 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

not sure about the rookie standings yet, that would be pretty sweet tho

madame boo berry (donna rouge), Sunday, 13 May 2012 22:03 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, it would indeed.

Crucibloggers saying that they really enjoyed the puzzles and that these will be available for sale on the website soon. Thinking of getting them.

three weeks pass...

Second of these music themed meta-puzzles available here today: http://pmxwords.com/. A little too easy.

I did the AV Club this morning and there was a musical clue that was slightly off but now I see someone else doing it and it seems like a different version of the puzzle.

OK, the one I saw was the wrong one, pre-edit.

which one? i must have done the old version.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 17:00 (eleven years ago) link

also dude just had a baby so i guess he's allowed a little slack

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

I know. I did. I am not complaining, was just enjoying the ever-rarer opportunity for some music trivia pedantry.

Can't see the puzzle here, it is on my home computer. 19 Across in the NW was clued as 'Single from "This Charming Man" The clue and answer are different now.

ah right. i've never really listened to the Smiths so i was just like "sure, i guess".

Came here to recommend today's crosSynergy puzzle by Patrick Blindauer, "Broken Eggs," which can be found in the forum at Amy R's crossword blog under Island of Loss Puzzles (CrossSynergy) http://www.crosswordfiend.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=16&sid=025df1d6e0c4ba0476eff67c4b1a8446 Nice little gimmick with clean fill and smooth cluing.

ratso piazzolla (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

Also liked today's NYT: triple stacked fifteens top and bottom, but all six were recognizable phrases. Needless to say, Rex P hated it.

ratso piazzolla (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

i don't hate triple stacked fifteens like a lot of people. my least favorite "type" is probably the running quotation

radical ferry (donna rouge), Saturday, 30 June 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, me too! I find those quip puzzles torture to solve because the theme is really giving me no information for a long time and I am not at that level where I can just ignore it and fill in the crosses. They all seem to be more or less the same sentence: "Whenever I am asked blah blah blah, I always say it isn't the blah blah blah, but the blah blah blah" It's like an overlong, poorly done Match Game question without Brett Somers or Charles Nelson Reilly to turn it into something funny.

ratso piazzolla (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 June 2012 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

Early this week I peeked at the solution to a puzzle I didn't do, and the first entry was "MTWTF," and I was like, "Mount WTF? What could that possibly refer to?"

and i just tried like 20 gaffney puzzles and i think i'm just terrible at metas

NASCAR, surfing, raising chickens, owning land (zachlyon), Monday, 13 August 2012 06:23 (eleven years ago) link

Usually no good at those either but got this one. Some clues have two answers, one of which sticks out over margin
