sometimes I think I really like Boys Noize but sometimes I think his stuff is just horrible distorted frankenhouse crap, guy is so inconsistent.

the whole scene is like that imo, and its a pain because that stuff sounds like crap mixed w. more trad bobbins so dudes end up playing like a straight hour of it

nice to see labels like BNR trax, marble players, sound pellegrino etc taking it back in a more bobbins-friendly direction

Yeah, the stuff Boys Noize does with Erol is a lot more Alkany than the usual BN schtick. I don't think it's that BN is inconsistent so much as he's really affected by who he's working with.

I remember really liking all the singles in the run-up to the first BN album, and all the remixes, but just getting a headache trying to listen to the album. "Adonis" is a great single which piqued my interest again, but all the Alkan collabs have been so face-meltingly generic in the worst way that I'm not wanting to dive in again.

I've got the Maya Jane Coles DJ-Kicks on, bit too tasteful/polite for me.

i'm listening to it for the first time, was expecting to dislike it, based only on the sources and tone of the hype i'm hearing about her, but actually i really like it. is it polite? i have it on *really loud* since i'm home alone in the middle of the day and it kinda kicks actually, some of the beats are pretty tough despite the frippery on top

it's really really really good

it does take awhile to warm up and there is some tubular bells type mellowness upfront but around the fifth track it starts to get jacking and gets more and more jacking until the end

this is probably my favorite commercial mix i've heard since the elijah and skiliam rinse thing and i keep up on that stuff

was trying to think of what traditional house mix i've enjoyed this much and i had to go back kind of far, maybe motor city drum ensembles dj kicks, but that's not as housey. the middle of this is really jacking, reminds me of labels like classic but with a lot more space and swing in the beats

DL'ed the Ghilbi thing awhile back, dude really needs to take it easy with the harsh eq's and dynamics processing. There are some cool ideas on the album but it's impossible to listen to because it's brickwalled to shit.

i am assuming it means the waveform is one huge solid rectangle because its what it sounds like, and i agree, the idea seems pretty good if basic (its just bangalter-style filter house?) but i just want to turn it off

brickwalled usually means compressed so that everything is max volume and/or clipping all over the place

btw audible clipping... well, I am sure it has been used as snd or Mark Fell solo or someone else as a cool effect, but it is bullllshiiiit

That's a fair point about the Ghibli. All of it is sampled from YouTubes, which is probably a big reason for its shitty mastering.

even so, just turning down the gain when mastering the track would probably help matters

Yeah, it's partially a gain issue, and partially the fact that there's a filter people for some reason select that maximizes

In his defense, 2011 is "just a bunch of demos and beats that weren't mastered or anything," in his own words. Any mastering issues thus make sense. that tom trago album is an ENDLESS GOLDMINE of dope mixes ... actually, that album is an endless goldmine of dope original tracks ... in retrospect and as more people hear it i think it will def go down as one of the all-time great house albums, up there in the ranks with PANSOUL and MAHOGANY BROWN
