You should know that the 'live' _Sex Machine_ is mostly not but rather overdubbed, and that the versions on _In The Jungle Groove_ and _Motherlode_ are not original, they were created for those CDs. The purist in me appreciates them but prefers the originals.

is it good, or is there some reason that it's not as well known as some of the other live records?

The original album, in mono with fake crowd noise, is pretty crap. But the original tapes, which make up the last quarter of disc 1 and all of disc 2, are pretty smoking. A *9* minute version of "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" could be twice as long without you noticing.

I'll go ahead and second/third/whatev' Funk Power 1970. It has that bewitching mantra-like groove in several places that reminds me of a lot of the more intense African sounds.

It's probably talking shit, or I've also gotten the sense that those guys aren't always even sure who's on what (since they were working 7 days a week and recording all the time), but it would be crazy if it was him on some of those songs and not Clyde or Jabo.

Did you play on anything else while you were with James Brown?

We did a lot of recording but to be honest with you, I don’t know what he did with all that stuff. He played a lot of games with us, man. He snuck and taped us, then came back and had us play what he already heard us play like he wrote it. He hired a composer named Dave Matthews for one reason. James told him, “I want you to compose and copyright everything these boys play.” Meaning once we walked out that studio, James owned it. Matthews told me years later when I ran into him at the Hong Kong Jazz Festival. You could see the sadness in his face when he told me this because they were taking advantage of these young black kids who didn’t know any better. But he didn’t want to say anything while James was still alive. My jaw was on the floor.

I think it's Cherry Red reissuing some titles together. I did assume there was bonus material since there normally tends to be.

Yeah - it's the first two JBs albums and the Fred Wesley album (which is up there with The Payback as my favourite James Brown studio release)

Recently finished Fred Wesley's autobiography, and it's seriously up there with Miles' as one of the most informative and entertaining musician autobios I've read. James does not come off well in it, and nothing I've heard/read from other members of James' bands makes me think Wesley's largely negative experience was unique.

Oh wow - I didn't know that existed. Must go search it out... I interviewed Maceo 15 or so years ago, he was a very lovely man.

And probably still is!

I can second that, it's a great read. I want to read Alan Leeds' book they came out last year.

Thanks just been reminded of that Fred Wesley memoir. think I came across mention of it a couple of years ago somewhere thenmay have actually held a copy in Foyle's but not the same hing as reading it.

I will third that. Loved that book and the way he painted the different circles that he moved in.

I listened to Love Power Peace countless times (and was in a band that basically did that show), so to finally see visuals from the '71 Europe tour (the cues, the steps, the drummers) is amazing. What really gets me are some of the tiny differences in the hits etc between this and the Paris show.

Also those drummers are murderous, although I still don't understand how/when they divide tunes between them.

Ha, I once played in a funk cover band that did the fast medley from Love Power Peace. It took us a looonnng time to get it down in rehearsals, but we were so proud of ourselves when we finally nailed it.
