La Monte (La Monte), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I've talked about this before, but, when I was living near Brooklyn, I made it a point to go up to Brooklyn hipster model types wearing 'ironic' metal tees and act like some crazy fan. I'd go up to a girl wearing a Dio shirt and throw up the devil horns and do my best Beavis "Liiiike a rainbooow in the daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark!" When I didn't get the reaction I wanted I'd proceed to ask them questions about the band - "What's your favorite song?," etc etc. Good fun.

I do the same thing with the Von Dutch bitchasses. Especially the boys. "Excuse me, do you have any idea who Von Dutch WAS?" Fucking idiots.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Today I'm wearing an pale blue oxford shirt. And yet I've never been to Oxford. Hence, I am a poser and should be killed.

One should be required to take a test--or an oath of loyalty--before wearing anything!

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd bet that Marcel's never played polo either.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:23 (nineteen years ago) link

by the way, this thread could also extend to band members wearing their own shirts.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:28 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread sucks cuz I'M here?
Uh, Michelle Branch wore a Queen shirt.
Peaches wearing Def Leppard underwear or something...but that's not really uncool.

Nowell, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:31 (nineteen years ago) link

One should be required to take a test--or an oath of loyalty--before wearing anything!

yeah, yeah, ha, ha and thrice ha. But let's face facts -- wearing a band/concert t-shirt is generally perceived as a declaration of fandom. Sporting, say, a "vintage" Sacred Reich t-shirt when one is not a Sacred Reich fan makes one a dishonest, disengenuous dick. Full stop. Moreover, being that the classic black metal concert t-shirt was formerly the calling card of the social pariah (cast out due to his/her "weird" tastes and failure to adhere to arguably more accessible fare), the appropriation of same by whistle-headed, blonde cheerleader types is an unacceptable insult to those who paid the price of unpopularity for their fandom. Is nothing sacred?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree with the Alex in NYC person.
Or should I just call him Alex?

Nowell, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:35 (nineteen years ago) link

You should call him "Mr. in NYC".

Nowell, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a Baltimore Orioles jersey, and yet I could not name anybody on their team for the past several years. It has very pretty colors, though.

chuck, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

That's okay..it's..vintage.

Nowell, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:41 (nineteen years ago) link

or Durst w/Minor Threat or Durst/Sonic Youth or Durst/Smiths or Durst/Joy Division.....(all of which have popped up on ILX in the past few months, but I can't be arsed to go find them).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

the orioles have got miggy tejada! and sidney ponson and melvin mora and jerry hairston... i know what you mean though, i used to have an orioles hat with the cartoon bird dude because i thought it was awesome, but i couldn't name anybody from that team other than frank and brooks robinson. and they won a world series! i have no problem with hillary duff wearing a motorhead shirt, seeing as how that pic was taken in her five-month halcyon hot period. nowadays, she could never get away with it.

i think there should be a rule that if you meet someone on the street wearing a vintage concert t-shirt and they can't name any of the songs by the band in question, they have to take off the shirt and give it to you. especially if they're Jenn!fer An!ston or H!llary Duff.

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm all in favor of that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

In the case of a Motorhead t-shirt, they should have to name a song other than Ace of Spades. Which I'm not sure I could do, but I don't have a motorhead t-shirt, and I'm not Hilary Duff.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Wooden: they also aren't allowed to name the song Motorhead played when they were on The Young Ones. i can't remember the name either, but it's the only time i've ever heard Motorhead mentioned outside of ILX and ironic-t-shirt-land

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:32 (nineteen years ago) link

They played Ace of Spades on The Young Ones.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:34 (nineteen years ago) link

But what if they name the song "Motorhead"? Does that count??

chuck, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:36 (nineteen years ago) link

yes, and then we slink away, not having seen any breasts despite our most valiant efforts at humiliating them.

Pharrell Williams wore an AC/DC shirt.

Pharrell Williams, y'know, listened to AC/DC. At least if his "I grew up around white biker trash" backstory (as seen in Da Capo 2000) has any veracity.

I own a Japanese Sapporo baseball jersey. I've always wanted to try Sapporo but the bar I go to with friends on occasion has stopped carrying it. Fuck.

Sapporo is best drunk out of the solid 650ml cans from a portable esky while lying in an extremely hot bath reading J.P. Donleavy and listening to the Fall. About 4 cans.

Is anyone else pissed off that there's a clothing band called 'Morrissey'?

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Pharrell Williams, y'know, listened to AC/DC.

by this logic Fred Durst should be allowed to wear all these shirts. Current listening according to his blog: Sparklehorse, Death Cab For Cutie, Pegboy.

Really thought there was more pushback against this thread at the time - maybe that happened on an adjacent thread?

i think there should be a rule that if you meet someone on the street wearing a vintage concert t-shirt and they can't name any of the songs by the band in question, they have to take off the shirt and give it to you.

Musicians Wearing Shirts from Bands That Sound Nothing Like Them

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Sunday, 10 October 2021 06:19 (two years ago) link

I think the pushback happened later, this thread being part of the general reaction against.

I'm sure my tale of how Alice got her Ramones t shirt is up there someplace.

Anyway, put it this way.. I have a Moondog t-shirt it's very nice. Nobody has asked me to name any tracks or anything. If they did I'd go I dunno.

The reason I have it is because I contributed to a kickstart to make the definitive profile movie. Its my reward.

Mark G, Sunday, 10 October 2021 07:24 (two years ago) link

Ah, anagram, thank you, you are correct. And Mark, you should listen to more Moondog!

In context, Dave M. was obviously being facetious re making hot celebrities take off their shirts, surely? It might have been a crude (?) joke but it wasn't an elitist one and he was spoofing the thread. Slightly further down, he posted this:

why can't we just accept this as eye-candy, not to mention attractive people of both sexes unwittingly giving free advertising to our favorite bands? would you rather see Shania in a Ramones t-shirt than see her wearing a big honkin' Coca-Cola logo? or worse, a tour shirt featuring one of Mutt Lange's OTHER proteges, Mr Anti-Can-Con, Mr Everything I Do (I Do It For You), Have you ever really really really really really really really really ARRRGH#Q(#W)R*

I read it as both hideously sexist and hideously elitist.

"lol girls don't know shit about music here's a way to get them to show you boobs"

emil.y, Sunday, 10 October 2021 13:50 (two years ago) link

Hm, I guess, given the overall context (where he was admitting he himself didn't know some of the bands and then made clear that he didn't have an actual problem with this), I had seen it as better-intentioned but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt bc I knew him then. I respect your pov and don't want to be Capn-Save-a-17yo-Post; I can see why it could land differently for someone who has faced those attitudes.

mark g, moondog has great song titles just fyi

brimstead, Sunday, 10 October 2021 15:58 (two years ago) link

I was in NY and I saw a Moondog 10" which looked intersting.

Then I saw it was on Honest Jon's label, ie the shop around the corner where I was employed at that time.

Seemed a bit daft to just buy it there and take it home all that way.

Anyway, when the film does come out, and I get my dvd reward, I'll come to his music fresh.

(I have heard some short pieces already though)

I'm sure you understood that my point was Because I'm a guy, nobody would ask me to qualify my wearing it, whereas if etc.
