I've used Big Black's Atomizer against my mouthbreather housemates before. With a properly adjusted EQ, it works well.

"KEROSENE AROUND...set me on FI-YAH!!!!11"

so what constitutes 'coffee table techno' anyway?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 June 2003 20:10 (twenty years ago) link

i was just playing kerosene very loud, that odd guitar intro is genius too. atomizer shakes my bedroom floor when i play it on vinyl. i love the liner notes on all those atomizer songs too. especially the bit about copyright infringment being "subject to mutilation and murder" and on songs about fucking. all the liner notes are genius. love for racebannon too, scary shit, but good stuff.

"The Watch Song" by Shellac works well here too......and makes me pound big red welts in my thighs from air-drumming and grin manicallay in ways that I can't even describe properly.

I prefer to achieve both goals by slapping one of the discs I cited above on the stereo, and putting it on perpetual re-play (for the neighbors' torment) and then going out to get drunk.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 June 2003 22:20 (twenty years ago) link

have you actually asked them to turn it down?

(I know you're pissed about your music but still..)

has communication been tried before escalation?

H (Heruy), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:14 (twenty years ago) link

you need to play something either really bad or really unsettling. but as bad to me usually means anything very "coffee-table", then they might not object too much to horrid MOR-type stuff like Phil Collins' Sussudio or Promise Me by Beverly Craven on repeat play (plus you'd prob have to buy them specially coz you won't already own them if you're anything approaching a right-thinking individual). so I'm opting for Diamanda Galas' Schrei-X (I've used this in music wars before and won hands down - it's horrible!), anything by Merzbow, Persepolis by Iannis Xenakis (there's a good new release of this with some tasty remixes on Asphodel now) or dig out your old thrash metal records - a bit of Carcass should do the trick but Bolt Thrower would be infinitely better...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:44 (twenty years ago) link

How 'bout we compile a list of the most fucked-up, Music War songs and put 'em together on a CD-R? That's a million dollar idea right there. They'll sell like hotcakes in NYC. EVERYBODY has had Music Wars with their neighbors here.

Rog, Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:59 (twenty years ago) link

BTW I did won a music war this morning by playing Reg Varney Sings (an album I picked up at a car boot sale for 10p by the bloke out of On The Buses) at an obscene volume when my opposite neighbours woke me up with nasty Lisa Lashes-style hardhouse at 8am this morning and the good thing about it was that it made my other neighbours laugh, too...

Bust out some absurdly loud sine sweep/bass test samples.. I've shook pictures off the walls with these before.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 15 June 2003 00:06 (twenty years ago) link

rog, i was thinking the same thing. a "music to anger your neighbours" type album. disturbing sounds and noises – people being hacked by chainsaw over polka or something twisted sounding like that.

when i was staying at a friends place in vancouver her upstairs neighbour would mercylessly crank polka all the time. loud – really loud. i thought it was hilarious, but she hated it and would counter with noise albums. but nothing worked – i never minded tho, it's one thing to be woken up by you neighbours awful music, it's another to wake-up laughing your ass off to your neighbours polka.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 15 June 2003 00:16 (twenty years ago) link

my old neighbors in Astoria used to play this Greek shit at the crack of dawn. Used to drive me and my roomate insane. Something about music in a foreign language that bugs the shit out of people. It taps into that xenophobic quality in everyone in addition to the obvious volume issues.

So, doom-e, crank out some Puerto Rican shit and you'll do just fine.

Rog, Sunday, 15 June 2003 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

Mrs. Miller. You can't get more annoying at loud volumes than this, but I warn you it will likely turn everyone in a 150ft radius into our mortal enemy.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 15 June 2003 03:38 (twenty years ago) link

They were playing their music insanely loud and smoking so much marijuana that it could be smelled from outside, these people don't deserve to be treated like adults.

Right before you leave for work, put on "Moon River" on the turntable, set to repeat ad infinitum, playing at maximum volume with the speakers right up against the wall.

make that Morrissey's 10 minute cover of "Moon River," and we've got a winner!

Well, Matthew, I have - but see, they don't answer the door because they know it's a neighbour.

Playing electronic concept orchestra works as well..

doom-e, Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:05 (twenty years ago) link

maturity is boring. i find bitterness and anger kinda exciting, theres a brutal honesty to it. hence keep playing the music, and fucking loud too

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:30 (twenty years ago) link

Schrei X sure is a powerful weapon, Dave S 's right about that.

...and it's the weapon I may have to use m'self one day, for the recently-moved-in shitheads next door are occasionally too fond of blasting their Korn and Linkin Park regardless of the hour.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 June 2003 13:43 (twenty years ago) link

It's a music war smart bomb and lays waste to allcomers! The great thing about it, if you have good speakers (if not, don't play it too loud, it'll blow your tweeters), is that it's got no bass at all but cuts through any other sound. Put the speakers on the window ledge facing outward, open the window, crank your amp, press play and you're away: ear-bursting, blood-curdling screaming that's quite enough to have most people begging for mercy within minutes...

Well, then. That's understandable!

But what about your *other* neighbors? Why punish them for the crimes of this jackass?

Ethics and fun aren't mutually exclusive!

Musical wars with neighbours = MASSIVE DUD = no one wins.

The only policy which works is to try and talk to them, and establish guidelines of hours during which neither of you will play loud music. Make sure you notify them in writing, and keep a copy. If they violate this agreement, call the police.

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:52 (twenty years ago) link

My neighbors HATED "My New House" by the Fall. (So you can see what twats they were.) So that was often the record of choice.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:56 (twenty years ago) link

Oh you can win... the police never do anything either

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:58 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, I've had a neighbour kicked out of the flat for violating noise agreements, so don't knock it till you've tried it. (That was more because the landlord was so scared of me calling the police.)

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:00 (twenty years ago) link

Really!? That would be great - it's one of the main resons I'm moving right now: my neighbours are total bumhammers kate... you have no idea...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:02 (twenty years ago) link

"Oh you can win..."

Darned right!

Irritating neighbour with weedy little domestic stereo playing Nevermind on repeat at 7:00AM every Sunday morning for 3 or 4 weeks in a row, despite me asking him not to extremely nicely (well, I was nice the first time!) vs. me eventually retaliating with 500W PA system = neighbour very rapidly getting the point and never doing it again!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

The joy of having a large record collection is that, no matter how antisocial/unpleasant the noise meted out by neighbours, I usually have something far, far more repellent...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:14 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't say that you can't win, I said it was a No Win Situation. You've proved you're the bigger asshat, but you've also destroyed yer relations with yer neighbour, you've made it into an adversarial contest and you pave the way for future confrontations and escalations over future problems. It is better to open a dialogue right at the beginning.

But hey, whatever, I understand it's much more FUN to talk about blasting yer neighbours with Metal Machine Music.
