Theo Parrish is MY hero!

Andy, what is this Rotating Assembly album of which you speak?

"I wish all the Theo Parrish releases weren't so nebulous and expensive"

Ha, for once I have a leg up on all y'all grime/gutter garage white label collectors, shit I can't get ahold of in my local shops! The Record Time stores in the Detroit suburbs always have Theo's stuff, and for very afforable prices. Maybe it's no so bad here after all!

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 10 April 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago) link

Either RT should have it on vinyl right now -- it's a triple-pack album. It's out on CD in Japan and, from what I've been told, it'll be available here through Sound Signature at some point soon. Over 20 people help out, including Andrés, Hanna, Rick Wilhite, and a bunch of vocalists. Lots of live instrumentation yet still very Theo. The vocals are so fogged out that half the time I can't even tell what the lyrics are.

Really digging the Harmonie Park 12" as well.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 10 April 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

andy is the moodymann out yet? does it have decent distribution? i fear my new job is going to force me into buying a lot of records again...

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 10 April 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago) link

I bought the first two Ugly Edits, they were ok but I sure coulda used that money on something better. Sheesh. Actually, the Harold Melvin one is pretty great.

Didn't the last Moodymann come out like 6 months ago??

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 10 April 2004 21:07 (twenty years ago) link

Agreed, Broheems, considering the price of the Ugly Edits, it's better to just pick up regular Theo 12"s.

Thanks for the tip, Andy. I'm surprised I didn't notice this on my last trip to Record Time. I don't stop in there very often (every couple months usually), but I was just there maybe 3 weeks ago and didn't see it.

p.s. Mullygrubber is my hero for hooking me up with Burzum and a bunch of Brazilian stuff in exchange for my Theo and Moodymann and Danielle Dax stuff.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Sunday, 11 April 2004 03:02 (twenty years ago) link

aw, its all love.

recommend more Parrish for someone who thinks that the Jill Scott remix is a work of fucking genius but could do without any of the stuff with too many jazz flutes in it.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago) link

do you have the first floor album or the sound signature sounds compilation? those are a bit more uptempo than the jill scott track in general but similarly chunky. the jazz flute stuff is a more recent trend (if i'm reading what you're saying right).

Well, there's that Marvin Gaye remix, better known as Major Moments of Instant Insanity.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, but it's WAY to heavy to play in NYC. 9/11 soundbites on the beat and "people jumping out of windows"??? In what context would this be appropriate?

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago) link

I will look out for First Floor then. Thanks!

No love for the Three Chairs project, which features KDJ, Malik Pittman, Theo Parrish and Rick Wilhite?

I just paid through the nose for the 2-cd Three Chairs album, but it is stunning.

I am absolutley LOVING all the Ugly Edits stuff. I'm sure this is old news to everyone, but it's just all so good.

is this the same thing as that triple-vinyl set that was recently released?

tricky disco, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 20:22 (nineteen years ago) link

i just checked and there are 6 extra tracks on the cds that aren't on the vinyl...

tricky disco, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

so what's the consensus on cd-only bonus tracks on vinyl-centric releases? Filler or killer?

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 21:16 (nineteen years ago) link

annoyer.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 21:39 (nineteen years ago) link

it doesn't bother me, but coming from these guys it seems kind of strange.

tricky disco, Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Three Chairs on CD? Good deal. I asked the guy at Record Time (in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale) if it was coming out on CD and he didn't even know. Glad I held off on purchasing the vinyl.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 23:09 (nineteen years ago) link

The second cd has the following listing:

Instant insanity (the 9/11 track, sirens, interviewees, Marvin Gaye)
Patterns indangerous
Richey on seven
Next message (the only dud, a ten-minute trawl through answering machine messages)
Muffled memories
Good kiss

My opinion, killer, with the exception noted above.

The first disc is the same as the vinyl.

paul c (paul c), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Instant Insanity is available as a Sound Signature white-label.
I wanna know, though: who would ever play this one out?
"There were people falling out of windows"
chilling shit.

I hate that record - it's one of the very few Theo things I dislike. It sounds cheap and tossed-off

roger adultery (roger adultery), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:29 (nineteen years ago) link

i went to hear these guys (3 chairs) play last night and it was wickedly good. there was plenty of 112 bpm cut-up eq madness, but also utterly bizarre (and good!) track segues like "love hangover" mutating via something tracky into "flash" by fix. kdj is a great dj and he worked the crowd brilliantly playing tracks from the new 3 chairs release, all 7 minutes of "controversy" by prince, "blue monday", and dirty italo. the music felt like it came on in waves (i was not on drugs either). i missed the last half hour, but it was one of those nights where you leave the venue sweaty, buzzed, and spent, but bounce all the way home anyway. the detroit boys come to chicago to show us how it's done. woo!

tricky disco, Sunday, 8 August 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

does anybody have any word on what the distro and pressing #s are like for the 3 chairs album?? should i hurry up and order it online or should i wait patiently for it to reach my indie shop / tower records??

Can't believe I've slept on the Ugly Edits series for so long. I've never fully gotten into any of Theo's albums, but each release in the UE series has blown me away and converted me into a fan.

He's also playing in Boston on 9/11. I have no idea what to expect.

Ok, I saw him play yesterday and he totally blew me away. He played a lot of stuff similiar to his Ugly Edits but much more extreme. Th most wild EQing I've heard in my life; some of the hard trebly parts where really grating in a good way. Some of the (few) tracks I noticed was a bizarre detroit/jazzy cover of "Conquering Lion" and Jamie Principle's "Your Love."

There was one amazing tune at around 90 BPM or so that had a vocal sample "I'm gonna put on my dancing shoes and go out." Does anyone know it? It sounded a lot like the Jill Scott remix, but with male vocals.

I think I had every release/mix including 3 Chairs (which didn't turn out to be a supergroup, it even seems to be less than the sum of its parts) until The Rotating Assembly releases. Destroy most of those !

"Falling Up" is the best remix I've heard in ages. Tremendous. Reminds me of Coil in places - dunno why exactly - but , damn - when's that new album coming?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 9 February 2006 02:04 (eighteen years ago) link

(xpost) and thanks for that Mssr. Nutrament. If it hadn't been for you I probably would never have heard this. New Theo 12"s are nearly impossible to find in NYC and I always have to wonder -- who buys them all? I never hear any of my dj friends play TP out, which is a shame.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 9 February 2006 02:07 (eighteen years ago) link

(xpost) And by "new album" I mean Carl Craig's.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 9 February 2006 02:08 (eighteen years ago) link

it seems like a lot are sold in the UK online shops, but maybe that's just them being ahead of the curve? I guess some are sold in Detroit and Chicago? The only thing I've seen in NYC are UE boots.

ziti sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 9 February 2006 02:12 (eighteen years ago) link

it came out as a really limited 10" (300 copies) then got heavily bootlegged in europe so i'm guessing that's why they have made more of the 10" available. interesting that it reminds you of coil jay vee.

Yeah, you can generally find Theo's stuff at Record Time in Ferndale/Roseville (aka Detroit 'burbs). I'm pretty sure they have mailorder, but can't say for sure (I live near the one store).

https://k7records.bandcamp.com/album/dj-kicks-theo-parrish

Growing up in Chicago, later Detroit-based music producer, Theo Parrish is internationally well known for his own inimitable downtempo house music style. The approach Parrish took to compiling DJ-Kicks was very ambitious, inviting his Detroit peers to produce a collection of brand new material, and in turn creating the first ever all exclusive entry to the esteemed series.

"Detroit creates. But rarely imitates. Why? We hear and see many from other places do that with what we originate. No need to follow. Get it straight. In the Great Lakes there are always more under the surface than those that appear to penetrate the top layer of attention and recognition. What about them that defy tradition? Those that side step the inaccurate definitions often given from outside positions? This is that evidence. Enjoy."

willem, Friday, 30 September 2022 12:34 (one year ago) link

so, not a dj kicks but a sound signature comp on k7? that's cool, not like he doesn't have a million cool mixes out already! although i'm often confounded by a lot of the non-theo productions on his label, so would have liked to hear how he mixes them - i'm assuming the 2CD tracklist reflects an unmixed comp, and he hasn't done many CDR mixes lately. what i heard of the "thanks to plastic" CDR seemed to be in the "eclectic aesthetic" / "when i snapped at blue basement" vein. i should probably check out the music gallery one with specter

it’s good— except for the first track and the other DeSean Jones track. first one is poorly constructed, and the religious bombast and wretched gospel singing of the second are huge turnoffs. and i LIKE gospel house, i just don’t think the Jones guy’s songs are any good, and his voice isn’t great, either.
