The Changes was superb; I think I used to have nightmares about Rafiq Anwar. Charltonlido is very good above on the atmosphere and attitude of early '70s TV though I can't separate it from my own time-occluded sensations of the period. Pylons. Everywhere.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I had that 70s thing filtered through during 80s I guess. I MAY have seen The Changes once but unsure, could be confusing it with the Friday Film string on Children's BBC.

Unfortunately I only really remember the shows everyone else remembers too.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:12 (eighteen years ago) link

The titles of The Changes are *so* 1970s - a BR Blue Western loco!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:15 (eighteen years ago) link

the one scene i remember from COTS(?) is the parade with the flourescent lights which started glowing as they passed under the powerlines. but, as i said, we were a bbc family and i only caught odd episodes of this (and magpie, tomorrow people etc) whilst visiting cousins so it could be something completely different.

(amazon tells me tomorrow people box set of all 8 series out shortly. radiophonic workshop TP theme music cd as well. COTS dvds for £8 too)

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Just ordered the book of The Changes.

Looks terrific.

looks like a 47

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Nigel Kneale's Beasts (watched it recently and it was great)
Armchair Thriller (esp. Quiet As A Nun)
Bad Boyes - mid 80's schoolboy romp!

The Changes occasionaly pops up on ebay - I'd love to see it. I wonder why the BBC dont commision more stuff like that, Children Of The Stones and ones like the Chocky Trilogy. Even up to the early 90's you'd get programmes like Tom's Midnight Garden and Moondial.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Nobody except me remembers Bright's Boffins and Robert's Robots.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:26 (eighteen years ago) link

looks like a 47

The title appears over a 47, but there's a 52 earlier in the title sequence.

Even up to the early 90's you'd get programmes like Tom's Midnight Garden and Moondial.

Moondial was another fantastic series. Just this morning, coincidentally, I was searching for local photos for another thread (the Japanese War Tuba thread) and came across a photo of the Moondial itself.

morrises minor, or something like that. about a morris minor repair shop. starred tony hawks, and they went on to record, morris minor and the majors (i htink) "stutter rap (no sleep till bedtime)" another hi-larious brit-novelty pop rap tune.

never heard it tho, there was only one copy on slsk and i never managed to get it.

never met anyone who remembers seeing this i dont think

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:34 (eighteen years ago) link

I remember that too!

They released two singles - the other one was called "This is the chorus". The chorus went:

This is the chorus
It goes round and around and gets into your brain
This is the chorus
And twenty seconds from now, you'll hear it again.

I'm fairly sure that was them, anyway.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I certainly remember Robert's Robots - written by the same chap who did Rentaghost. I thought it was funny.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Weren't you allowed to watch ITV, Koogs? Not even Just William?

whenever britishes call tv shows 'programmes' i imagine them watching tv in the 'bless this house' living room. programme.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:46 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost: I remember Ace Of Wands. Main character was called Tarot, sig went something like "Tarot has a Tarot phenomenon, Tarot is a mystic man." Good, but Timeslip was even better.

OK, does anyone remember:

Nice Time (comedy sketch show starring Kenny Everett & Germaine Greer)
Mad Mad Women
It's Awfully Bad For Your Eyes, Darling

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Ambrose I remember that Morris Minor sitcom vaguely. Even a tiny bit of the Chas n' Dave-ish theme tune ("Mooorrrrrriss Minor..." er, yeah that's about it)

The king of these progs for me is Zokko. I have one friend who remembers it - but many people who surely must have watched it get strangely adamant that I'm making it up. However mark s remembers it which is a good sign. There's also a bit on the net, although the best link, which had a picture of the zokko pinball table, is now mysteriously missing.

An American one here, but no one I talk to about it seems to remember the late '80s E.R. that was a sitcom starring George Clooney and Elliott Gould.

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 15 March 2006 15:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Early eighties, actually.

Just Our Luck -- the idiot program about a guy and his genie slave. Programmed against The A-Team; died.

There Goes the Neighborhood -- Buddy Hackett and two other lamers are 'hobos' in a very badly made-up sense who inherit a fortune and deal with a prim and proper butler all day

I remember this. I'm ashamed to admit I bought the 7" single. I thought the rubbish comedy show was a spin-off of the record, rather than the other way round.

Tehrannosaurus HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

The Home Front - Peter Tinniswood's existential time-travel black comedy that is theoretically my favourite programme ever (given that I haven't seen it since 1981) and still breaks my heart. (I found a novelisation in the library a few years back and it was great but it wasn't the same.)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 16 March 2006 09:21 (eighteen years ago) link

So Haunt Me

The Children of Green Knowe

Geordie Racer (may have been part of a kids educational programme)

Some programme about a hotel, I don't know whether it was a drama or a comedy. My mum used to watch it on a friday or saturday night when I was quite young, maybe about 15 years ago. She doesn't know what I'm talking about though. I vaguely remember folk having affairs, some old woman wandering the corridors, I don't even know if it was british or american.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 16 March 2006 09:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, that's Hotel. It was set in San Francisco and featured the same posturing, backstabbing bitches and shoulder pads common to all late-80s US nighttime soaps. It was one of the last to be commissioned - like after Falcon Crest or Dynasty, so it was appalling and had to have James Brolin in it. That's an '80s US TV regulation.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 March 2006 09:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to keep popping up here and saying "Oh! I remember that!"

So Haunt Me - not bad for a BBC sitcom. It got mentioned in the press around here, because one joke featured a disparaging comment about the place.

The Children Of Green Knowe, I don't see how anyone could forget. I've thought about seeing if we could have a Cambridge FAP there - it's just off the A14, and they are willing to show people round if you get in touch in advance.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 16 March 2006 09:57 (eighteen years ago) link

So Haunt Me was just awful!

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Were there topiary animals in Greene Knowe, or am I confusing it with the Shining?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Captain Zep - My memory may be playing tricks on me but all the kids in the audience for this show used to wear Captain Zep pin badges. You could also write in from home having solved something and they would send you a badge (my memory not clear on this as you can tell). Anyway when I wrote off and said badge arrived it was just a crappy sticker. I was REALLY disappointed. I seem to remember my Mum and I writing back and saying how rubbish this was and they sent me a proper metal pin badge as worn on the show. (No such problems with Tiger Tim and The Untied Shoelaces Show, they sent me a badge no problem. Good old Tiger Tim) I can't remember what this Zep badge looked like and can't remember seeing it in my badge box so I'm doubting this is true but I seem to have some memory of it.

My standard 'I remember this and you don't' show is 'The Ghosts of Montley Hall'. Sunday afternoons before (after?) Glen Michael's Cavalcade

It was Motley Hall, wasn't it?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:28 (eighteen years ago) link

1. Connie - Mid-1980's ITV drama set around the rag trade in the Midlands. Starred Stephanie Beacham.

2. Strike It Rich - this was on the BBC and was about Premium Bond/lottery winners.

3. Maelstrom - spooky 1980's thriller set in Scandinavia. Scary-looking dolls played a prominent part.

4. Westbeach - Early 1990's post-Eldorado BBC soap effort at two feuding families in a seaside town.

5. Rides - Early 1990's drama about an all-women taxi firm.

Am I ringing any bells here?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 16 March 2006 10:36 (eighteen years ago) link
