PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:06 (seventeen years ago) link

The Royal Standard being raised over Windsor Castle was introduced this morning as "BREAKING NEWS", followed by some old dears from Tunbridge Wells who'd left home at 4a.m. to make sure they got good flag waving seats saying things like "ooh she's lovely" and "we love the queen" followed by speculation about whether the weather would hold or not. I felt rather unpatriotic for eating Kellogs Fruit & Fibre on such a British morning.

Drop dead you old bag!

> followed by some old dears from Tunbridge Wells who'd left home at 4a.m.

i guess those were the only two people on the seats outside the castle on Breakfast this morning...

(i did wonder about the security of windsor castle this morning when i saw it - there's nothing but a lawn between the road and the castle. then i realised IT'S A CASTLE, how much more secure do you get?)

in 20 years will she send herself a telegram? that would be odd.

A footman will bring it on a silver platter and she'll say, "Oh, how delightful, one has received a telegram from one"

she must be a nightmare to buy presents for

Tabloid yesterday, front cover was a picture of the queen and headline "1 OUT OF 5 ASYLUM SEEKERS HEAD TO BRITAIN"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 21 April 2006 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I remember a few years back they interviewed asylum seekers and asked them what the one person they associated the UK with was. The queen came fourth I think, behind Thatcher, the Spice Girls, and Mr Bean.

Excuse my rudery

but stuff the jubilee!
Princess A to Princess Bea
and all their work for charity
Every royal lion' s head
on every boiled and frying egg
And every sodding polo team
in Hello ! bloody magazine

And if you feel this story lacks
the royal seal on candle wax
Reel to reels of scuzzy facts
of dodgy deal and income tax
String me up from Traitor's Gate
stick my head upon a stake
And if you feel this story sucks
that's probably becauae I made it up
I didn' t really hitch a lift
to Windsor Castle bearing gifts
And I can prove it wasn' t me
I was on a stage in Germany
I'vealways loved the Oueenie Mum
her daughters and her daughter' s sons
From Princess A to Princess Bea
And all the Royal Family

i've decided that actually i'm not that keen for the queen to die. i couldn't bear the three-week orgy of 'mourning' the nation would be forced to endure, i think she should time it so that when she does die it should coincide with, i dunno, the world cup or something so that it gets overshadowed completely.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Another of the headlines on the papers was about how she definitely would not abdicate, which surprised me because I didn't even know it was being talked about, the last I heard (IE 5 years ago) it was more likely that Chazzer would abdicate in favour of William, tho this was back when the popular view of Camilla was 'horse-faced hag' rather than 'national treasure'.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:48 (seventeen years ago) link

the whole family shd abdicate in favour of esteban buttez

mark s (mark s), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:51 (seventeen years ago) link

The old Queen Mum seemed to keep her marbles about her so there's not much chance for Charlie that his maw will be forced to abdicate on the grounds of doolalliness

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 10:53 (seventeen years ago) link

They played the National Anthem after the 8 o'clock pips on the radio this morning as I was driving to work, and I did fleetingly think I should stop the car somewhere so I could stand up.

Koogy, the bit by the lawn is squaddies' quarters, so they would bear the brunt of anything untoward. Clever really. The rest of it is fairly impregnable.

What's more, there are loads of CCTV cameras.

do you think the chop has already happened? the neck seems to be a gap yet his head is not fallen

I thought the guy on the right was doing a wee bit of magic trickery and making the hat float

TS: Mick Ralphs vs. Ariel Bender (Dada), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:20 (seventeen years ago) link

the chop has happened but the shock of killing the monarch has meant that TIME ITSELF has come to a standstill!

It is decking.

King has just propelled his head off his shoulders by internal combustion to deny chopper his pleasure.

Hovering hat remains a mystery though.

How come everyone else has got choppers? Did they just pick someone out of the crowd?

I think Richard Brandon was from London but there are some who say it was an Irishman from Galway named Gunning who did it.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 21 April 2006 12:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Then there's the two blokes who wrote a book about my village, who say it was someone called George Joyce - "Cornet" George Joyce. I can find no evidence to back up their claims though. Nevertheless, it is a belief I cling to.

I mean, by slowly abolishing itself, sure, I guess?

Wait, it's not that drastic. They are all kids of the youngest child. The son and heir, Crown Prince Frederik, and his four children, Christian (born 15 October 2005), Isabella (born 21 April 2007) and twins Vincent and Josephine (born 8 January 2011), are unaffected by the change.

It contrasts with here, when even when one prince is a philanderer and paedophile and another says he doesn't want to do the duties anymore, goes to his wife's country "in search of privacy" and yet we hear more about him and his missus than ever before, *they* don't get stripped of their titles. Possibly Chuck will revisit this, I mean, why shouldn't they be Mr Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Mr Harry Mountbatten-Windsor, respectively? What's he got to lose by doing that? But I have heard no rumours to that effect.

Grandpont Genie, Friday, 30 September 2022 10:59 (one year ago) link

Nobody dies of 'old age', though.

Could be a Scottish thing. My mother's death certificate said frailty and old age, iirc.

Guardian link has this:

Old age is acceptable if the doctor certifying death has cared for the patient for a long time, was not aware of any disease or injury that contributed to death and had observed a gradual decline in the person’s general health and functioning.

StanM, Friday, 30 September 2022 11:21 (one year ago) link

they can only put human illnesses on death certificates afaik

link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 30 September 2022 11:24 (one year ago) link

"failed the ultimate test" as defined by Dr Richard Pryor. I suppose putting common illnesses on the death certificate wasn't considered appropriate for a monarch.
