As an AARP member I'd like to say WHATEVER, KIDS, TALK TO THE HAND BECAUSE THE BEARD AIN'T LISTENING.

Remember, the only time that music REALLY meant something maaan was from 1964 thru about 1969. Woodstock was IT, the apex of culturally significant popular music and it'll never happen again, so you all missed out. Those were the greatest bands EVER and everything else that came after can only aspire to such a throne.

Also, all 21st-Century American politics can be understood thru the lens of about 1968 or 1972.

Vice published the definitive "generational divide" article about the boomers. Generation X bashing is over ... now it's all about Generation Y, those lazy, coddled, ADD, gagdget-obsessed, superficial bums.

in my own family's case:

-gets educated thru a public system that had a great boost of gov't funding from the 50s
-had parents who either had union or public jobs to raise them
-attended public universities, either on GI Bill or thru publicly-backed loans
-got jobs at public high schools as part of teachers' unions which ensured their wage, health insurance for them and their kids, and pension, also participated in strikes as part of said unions
-voted for every anti-union and anti-gubmint candidate for 3+ decades

2. What self-entitled fucks! Has the AARP magazine ever been so goddamn SNIDE? Boomers are the best at autofellation-levels of boastery. Like they invented fucking everything.

my hubs and i have a running joke that my dad (b. 1945) invented everything because it very truly goes like this, ALL THE TIME:

me: i made some potato soup last night and it didn't turn out very well
dad: [who doesn't cook like EVER] potato soup is more difficult than it seems. you don't know how hard i've worked on stocks and getting the seasonings just right
me: it's potato soup. when was the last time you made potato soup?
dad: well, i have done extensive stock making and it's not as easy as it seems

you should see the running list of things my dad invented:
(here is a sample)

sushi
Russia
jazz
soup
soul music
literature
sports
the land speed record

i could go ON AND ON

on the one hand, boomer bashing is some of the most boring work-out-yr-oedipal-complex shit around - you know what's more self-congratulatory than a roomful of boomers? two people who're CALLING THEM OUT ON THEIR BULLSHIT, MAAAAAN

on the other hand this:

-voted for every anti-union and anti-gubmint candidate for 3+ decades

sure the fuck panned out in Cali, all those boomers once they had money did not hesitate to vote with the assholes every time

J0hn D., Monday, 12 January 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

i mean, he's a good person and i don't want to dis him on the internet (though i think i already did that) it's just irritating that everything i talk about, even potato soup, becomes this "let me tell you about potato soup" scenario.

This is what specifically pisses me off about my father -- drawing 100% DAV benefits and IBEW pension for 35 years and he's, like, reactionary to Taliban levels.

WmC, Monday, 12 January 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Do you ever call him on that?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 January 2009 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link

they're the "I want it all" generation. They benefited from high taxes and big government when they were younger, and now that they're old and have money they want low taxes and small government so they can keep it all. What a bunch of rat bastards, on a complete generational scale.

At least the Republican idiots in my family worked their asses off for their money, so at least they have some justification for their stances.

burt_stanton, Monday, 12 January 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Do you ever call him on that?

Not yet, because I think he would actually try to deck me if I did. But he's turning 80 this year so I think I could take him.

Also, after all the work he's put in to protect his money, I want to inherit some of it.

WmC, Monday, 12 January 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Wise points. Although now I think of your dad as Red from the Tube Bar.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 January 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link

now boomers are staying in their jobs until their 70s and 80s because of their greed and stupidity, thereby fucking over us youngins once again. They're definitely the "worst generation"

or maybe they can't afford to retire? or is that too obvious a point?!?

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Monday, 12 January 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno if I agree that problem with the boomers is that they voted Republican - generations before them did, generations after them did. Sure they should have known better, but shouldn't have, well, everyone? They mostly bought into shit for the wrong reasons...just like most Americans. Americans/Westerners tend to grow up *relatively* rich and live *relatively* easy lives - that doesn't mean very many people are going to *really* put it all into perspective and vote and act accordingly. This is pretty independent of generation. If anything, it's surprising that the boomers aren't more conservative. The GOP sells the idea that it's easy to succeed, and given the easy boomer life experience, why shouldn't they believe it?

The biggest problem with the boomers is the super obvious one - there's just too fucking many of them. It's difficult to blame them for this.

At one end of the party, dancing and drinking spectrum is the annual Boomer Social Halloween Dance. This age 50- plus group has already seen their share of Halloween, first through the eyes of their children and now their grandchildren. They also have a wealth of costume background. So, now it is their turn but in a more sedate style.

Far from an open bar, their first and often only drink is included in the $15 admission. Music is familiar, what they remember from different times of their life and is not loud.

Their favorite entertainers are the duo of T*** D**** and K**** E****** who sing recorded songs exactly the way they were written. Costumes are less blood and gore but often sexy and imaginative. The singles are once again dating so most try to emulate a celebrity they admired.

The crowd dances non-stop but leaves at 11 on Saturday night to be ready for church in the morning.

New hot springs pools. Pick your heat. Pick your similar, single, soaking friends.

Now there are two Glenwood hot springs to try. The new Iron Mountain Springs has 16 pools along the Colorado River. "Adult soaking away from children."

TS: Boomers Know When To Say When vs. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN HAVE TO BRING UP "ADULT SOAKING AWAY FROM CHILDREN"?

pplains, Friday, 8 November 2019 02:10 (four years ago) link

At one time successful men in their late 40s and 50s had to look to much younger women to find mates to which they were sexually attracted. Similarly, attractive, older women with money would seek out younger males to satisfy sexual needs as sexual impotence was a real and widespread problem (although vastly underreported) for middle-aged and older males

But now cosmetic medicine has made baby boomer females look far younger than their age and the breakthrough of Viagra allows men to perform at a sexual level that was once limited to the young. In fact television ads for pills to cure "ED" which was once an almost taboo subject are now almost ubiquitous. A sexual arousal medicine for baby boomer women is even reportedly in the works.

I'll say this for the Boomers: They were definitely a generation that would not shut the fuck up about fucking.
