oh, i do hope to bring the lolz w/ my Italian-free list.
So no Taxi Driver on your ballot?

It's perfectly possible to do an amazing Italian-free horror list, but I don't know why you'd purposefully want to cut off your naso to spite your faccia.

Night of the Demon & Curse of the Demon are the same Tourneur film, right? that's a goodie.

I believe so but there are a couple Night of the Demon's IIRC...

What else will your list be devoid of, aside from scares?
two of the most boring films of the Carter Administration, Alien and The Shining.
Eric and I both like Kiyoshi Kurosawa a lot, strangely.

really confused about the lack of distinction between horror and suspense/thriller itt. if M. and NIGHT OF THE HUNTER are nominated without remark, can i nominate FRENZY (1972)?!
idk i will just vote from the list you ppl draw up.

wait did anyone say
Mulholland Dr
?
hahaha too late marc I already nominated Frenzy...
Now let's pummel genre definitions to death!

I know what you mean. I might also have to be quite strict on the distinction between horror and giallo. Maybe. Depends on quite how full to bursting my list gets. Night of the Hunter has been accepted into the horror cannon for a while, though.

oooh I need to rewatch Shallow Grave. The one time I saw it was when I had the worst/first hangover of my life when I was like 14. I don't remember it much except for a guy drilling holes in the ceiling.

MPD Psycho isn't a film, it's a TV series! It's one of the greatest TV series ever, but still, it doesn't count for this poll.
Also, I thought The Eye was a bit rubbish.

Edward III - there is a whole world of difference between a TV movie and a TV series. I shake my head at thee.
― emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago) link
eh kinda think of MPD as a miniseries so
warning: last house on dead end street will place high on my ballot
A miniseries is still a series! There is no way you can get around the fact that it just isn't a film.
― emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:46 (twelve years ago) link
I'll keep it on the list if you're really going to vote for it, edward iii. But, yeah, it's not going to get much support.

dude I've been wanting to see a bunch of these (God Told Me To, Blue Sunshine, Suspiria, Tetsuo: the Iron Man) forever

I kind of want it struck from the list because I don't want to see it languishing at the bottom like an unloved film, when it should instead be seen as a much-loved TV programme.
― emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:48 (twelve years ago) link
liked Tetsuo: the Iron Man.
horror is way cleverer, has better cinematography, more plot, deeper characterisation
B+ trolling, but shitty tech qualities actually HELP many horror films... early Romero, Cronenberg before he moved to the adults' table, etc.
― Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:48 (twelve years ago) link
Hmmm . . . maybe at some point we should poll "monster movies" separately from "horror movies."

Pan's Labyrinth?
― God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:48 (twelve years ago) link
Morbs sort of makes a valid point, but I'd argue they're expertly deployed shitty tech qualities.

A stupid choice but one that scarred me for life as a kid because it dealt with two of my worst fears: live burial and anthropophagy
Blood Beach (1980)
― Frank Youngenstein (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:50 (twelve years ago) link
Really want to veto Pan's Labyrinth, ftr.
― hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link
Not trolling. And yeah, I used cinematography rather than 'technical qualities' because I think that's a strong point with a lot of horror (but by no means all - I guess I was suggesting that the pinnacle of horror cinematography is far far superior to the pinnacle of comedy cinematography). But I adore low rent lo-fi tech stuff just as much. Hence why in my next post I am going to nominate Herschell Gordon Lewis' The Wizard of Gore.
― emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link
man, the VHS cover to Blood Beach used to freak me out.
Another nomination:
The Wizard of Gore (1970)
Forbidden World (aka Mutant)
xp: I did say many of my nominations would be pushing it!
― God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago) link
Also I would take issue with the idea that the tech qualities on early Cronenberg are particularly shitty.
