I love how many times Eraserhead is getting nominated. :)

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 13:58 (twelve years ago) link

will be an easy ballot cuz there are only about 20 respectable horror films ever

and one of the top 5 is Kobayashi's Kwaidan (1964)

figure it will get 3 votes.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 13:59 (twelve years ago) link

Added that boring movie to the nominations list.

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

also..

The Changeling (1980)

(not the one w/ Angelina Jolie)

picture jean rollin (Pillbox), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:00 (twelve years ago) link

Horror = a gazillion times better a genre than comedy. And often funnier, too.

emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

know-nothingism reigns, it is the Year Zero!

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago) link

Oh. Oh, oh, oh. I started watching Cathy's Curse last night (from the same 10 for $10 box set that introduced me to the wonderful God Told Me To and Pieces) while going to sleep, and I'll have to finish it to see whether it belongs here, but what I saw was the most jaw-droppingly :O sub-Ed Wood ineptitude which was somehow so inept that it started crossing over into something surreal and unnerving even while it made me laugh. It doesn't feel like something made by human beings or anything with the capacity for conscious thought.

(Also, horror is way cleverer, has better cinematography, more plot, deeper characterisation... I could go on...)

emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, god, yeah, The Changeling. That movie scared the ever-living crap out of me when I was like 12 and saw it on HBO.

Frank Youngenstein (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

Glad to see that Morbs will be maintaining the complain-a-thon throughout this poll, as well.

Haha, like months ago.

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

You've admitted repeatedly that you don't enjoy being scared and don't like horror movies generally, Morbs, so I suspect the thread will give your cavils all the attention that they merit.

Frank Youngenstein (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:05 (twelve years ago) link

actually I won't DWH, since it's my least fave genre and I don't care what you guys think about anything

You just can't handle the truth!

I will check out Kwaidan at some point, though, I quite like a good portmanteau.

emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago) link

C'mon, Morbs, you're not fooling anybody. You may not agree with anything we think, but you care so hard what we think about everything.

Thinking of nominating the Paul Schrader "Cat People" just for the lols. Although the scene where Ed Begley gets his arm ripped off by Catcolm McDowell and bleeds to death on the floor scared the pants off me when I was 13.

Getting the name wrong on one of the most indelible characters in horror history? Sure bet.

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:10 (twelve years ago) link

Sry, Ed Begley JUNIOR. Forgot Morbs was around, don't want to confuse him.

Frank Youngenstein (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:10 (twelve years ago) link

Okay because when I went to the google doc, stuff seemed to move out of order? No idea what happened, but hope it wasn't me.

That was me. I closed off access and re-alphabetized.

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

Hmmm . . . how does one say "Plug it up!" and "They're all going to laugh at you!" auf Deutsch?

Frank Youngenstein (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

The Golem (1920)

HE HATES THESE CANS (Austerity Ponies), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

Oooh, MrDasher has just reminded me I need to watch Onibaba before we vote in this. Fortunately I have the DVD, yess. Also one for AP's list, if he doesn't mind older stuff...

emil.y, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:16 (twelve years ago) link

The Criterion transfer of Häxan is in my queue on Hulu. Must watch before this gets to the voting stage.

Frank Youngenstein (Phil D.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

I am adding all these titles to the doc. Will do cleanup later when I'm not pretending to work.

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

oh, i do hope to bring the lolz w/ my Italian-free list.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:19 (twelve years ago) link

What else will your list be devoid of, aside from scares?

hot and brothered (Eric H.), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:20 (twelve years ago) link

oh, i do hope to bring the lolz w/ my Italian-free list.

So no Taxi Driver on your ballot?

1 of paper = 4 of coin (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

It's perfectly possible to do an amazing Italian-free horror list, but I don't know why you'd purposefully want to cut off your naso to spite your faccia.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

I believe so but there are a couple Night of the Demon's IIRC...

I will transmit this information to (Viceroy), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

What else will your list be devoid of, aside from scares?

two of the most boring films of the Carter Administration, Alien and The Shining.

Eric and I both like Kiyoshi Kurosawa a lot, strangely.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

that reminds me -

Night of the Hunter, The

I will transmit this information to (Viceroy), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

really confused about the lack of distinction between horror and suspense/thriller itt. if M. and NIGHT OF THE HUNTER are nominated without remark, can i nominate FRENZY (1972)?!

idk i will just vote from the list you ppl draw up.

marc iv, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

wait did anyone say

Mulholland Dr

?

marc iv, Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha too late marc I already nominated Frenzy...

Now let's pummel genre definitions to death!

I will transmit this information to (Viceroy), Thursday, 5 April 2012 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

I know what you mean. I might also have to be quite strict on the distinction between horror and giallo. Maybe. Depends on quite how full to bursting my list gets. Night of the Hunter has been accepted into the horror cannon for a while, though.

xxpost
