Comparing Sudeikis to Piscopo is f'in weird.

Horrible Bosses made 200 mil ww. I don't think Joe Piscopo's combined filmography made that much money.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

i guess it figures after last year was like the first summer in SNL history with no cast changes that this would be the biggest batch of departures since '94 or '95. Samberg is definitely ready to go, the plethora of non-musica 'digital shorts' has been pretty dire lately.

i really had no idea Horrible Bosses made bank like that, damn.

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

Sudeikis has been kind of the glue of the show for a while imo, i may actually miss him

Pretty sure I saw Kay Cannon act in plays when she was in college.

even losing his awesome jump on-screen into the running man in What Up With That is :( to me

fwiw sudeikis costarred in a big (awful) hit comedy last year and is somehow at the point where is name is above the title, he's been on snl a few years, and if there was a time to strike while the iron was hot this is it. if his romney was an impersonation ppl talked about and if romney looked like he was going to win i could see an argument for him hanging around but neither's the case. samberg can still do his shorts whenever he wants, has enough of a fanbase w/ lonely island that he doesn't need the show as much as another cast member might, and he's gonna be in an adam sandler movie that will be a big hit so i can see him thinking it's time (fwiw i think i liked hot rod more than bridesmaids and definitely more than horrible bosses). i never understood really why wiig came back this year, unless it was just an issue of timing.

balls, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

yeah what up with that could survive w/o will forte but no sudeikis would be a bridge too far. it would be awesome if they could get him to come in to just do that the two or three times they do it a season (seems totally doable).

balls, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

I think they just wanted to go out together as a graduating class, like the last group.

Sudeikis has been on the show for seven years. There are only a handful of people who have done eight or more seasons.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, as much as I may miss any of the folks that leave, I think it'll ultimately be good to shake up the cast a bit. Six of the current cast members (including Seth Meyers) have been around for 5-10 years already.

Meyers is on year 11.

Most seasons:

Hammond: 14
Franken: 11
Meyers: 11
Meadows: 10
Armisen: 10

polyphonic, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

who is longest serving cast member? tim meadows? xpost not counting seth meyers or al franken or other guys who were primarily writers but did update or popped up in a sketch from time to time

xpost - of course it was hammond

balls, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

Meyers is on year 11.

Good catch. Actually, I should've just said "6-11," since none of them (Meyers, Armisen, Thompson, Sudeikis, Samberg, Wiig) debuted later than fall 2005.

Okay, maybe Dana Carvey, then. And yes, I know there were extenuating circumstances for his career's nosedive, but still.

Again, I feel the need to point out that I like Sudeikis a lot and wish him the best, but if he's quitting SNL to pursue a film career, I'm not sure that he fully recognizes his own strengths/weaknesses. I think he'd do really well in an ensemble sitcom cast, though.

Yeah, they need to stop doing 'What Up With That?' full stop if he isn't around to contribute.

taccone already left a couple years ago and i kinda wonder if schaffer even does much besides the digital shorts. samberg has been seemingly doing more live sketches lately but half of them are practically overtly making fun of how shitty samberg's impressions are.

damn I was really hoping Sudeikis would get a full movie for his 'What Up With That?' character

it could happen, clearly Kenan is sticking around until he gets his Ladies Man moment

Anyone else get the impression Drunk Uncle went on a little bit longer than scripted this time? Moynihan was in the zone.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:30 (twelve years ago) link

For the second time, when Drunk Uncle started I thought I'd hate it, but both times he killed it. "Is this wi-fi organic?" Was that the line? Something like that.

And Almost Pizza was SNL at it's best.

dan selzer, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

Laughed out loud at almost pizza and drunk uncle. I'm such a hypocrite.

pplains, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:39 (twelve years ago) link

Lotta consensus here. Weekend Update winds up being a high point of the show more often than not these days, thanks largely to Hader and Moynihan. Another sure-fire high point being whatever Killam's doing in a given week. His star is on the rise, for sure.

Looks like the Zooey Deschanel Show is the new sketch they're going to suck all of the laughs and charm from through endless reiteration. This one was fine, but Lorne's predictable writing is on the wall.

Kristen Wiig does a really good Drew Barrymore impression, but ruins it by not even resembling her in the slightest. Armisen looks more like Barack Obama than she does Drew Barrymore.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 April 2012 19:07 (twelve years ago) link

Didn't love new girl in the Bravo skit but thought she was great as Penelope Cruz trying to read the complicated words.

drunk uncle was the most i'd laughed at SNL in a loooong time

how many of them have run? i'd like to see him again

That Penelope Cruz skit was so wrong but I laughed so fucking hard at it

Jay Pharaoh should be doing shit like the school principal all the damn time and Will Smith and Jay-Z impressions very little of the time. Let the man breathe!

Moynihan's dancing during the Empire State of Mind sketch was great. Gotye seems like a chill bro. Loved the open with all the GOP hopefuls at the bar. Laser Cats 7. Josh Brolin was pretty great each time he was on screen, especially in the aforementioned high school dance sketch.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 April 2012 05:53 (twelve years ago) link

Californians was pretty amazing.

Seconding Jay Pharaoh expanding out. I will say that I thought his impressions tonight were more comedically heightened. Like he added little tics so it was less straight forward. I hope he doesn't get the boot.

I fell asleep after the second Gotye performance (btw that dude owns) but that stupid Empire State of Nind skit had no business being as funny as it was

Also loved The Californians and the slow hallway. Actually I really enjoyed most of what I saw.

You'll need to watch the final high school dance sketch on hulu or something. Even better than the last time they did it.
