@late great, yeah this was part of a web only free EP he put out last year

Dominique, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

really? where did you get that? i never heard about anything last year except "rainy dub"

i liked it. what software did you use? sounded accomplished enough to me, i've been making mixes on computer recently but don't have any beat-matching software (so i've just been doing dumb tricks to get from track to track, like dub effects + crossfades, or stopping a track and starting the next one on what would have been the downbeat).

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

I used the free version of virtual dj, I really don't know anything about software or equipment, I mean my exposure to fucking around w/ music up to this point has kind of been just making loop based beats on whatever sound editing software I have at hand

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

ha i'll have to try that

40oz of tears (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

good mix dominique I just stepped on my cats tail tho and it could be because of the mix

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

haha I don't know what that means! but I don't want to hurt your cat! listening to your mix now

Dominique, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

so short! but cool tunes, I like whatever is happening around 4:15, is that machinedrum? if so, reinforces my opinion that i like him better when he's not so busy on the programming

Dominique, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:23 (twelve years ago) link

jordan, I use Mixxx, which is free and mostly great.

@dsb: thanks, man! but which one? the house one or the techno one? the house one looks more like your taste though. (based on your mixes)

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 16 April 2012 05:32 (twelve years ago) link

Both! but especially i'm gonna have to track down some of the tracks in the beginning of the house one. the MMKM, Ra. H, Leon Carson stuff was all great and new to me.

btw i always wondered why 578 was credited to gunnar and not kassem

Nice mix late great.

What are the tracks with the "What you want me to do for you" vocals and the one with the speech about religion, not to mention the closing track :)

EDB, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

did you like it??? thank you!!! i've been working really hard on these, and i don't like to overdub so i literally do like 50 live takes over the course of a week or two until i'm happy with it - still feel like your advice way way back when on this thread about mixing in a more efficient way and not trying to be flashy was really pivotal in improving my (extremely meager) skillzzzzz

the "what you want me to do for you" track is midland's remix of julio bashmore's "ask yourself" on PMR, first heard blawan play it and it blew my mind

the religion speech is the last track on the 6th borough project album ("settle") i only used the last minute of it but it's a sweet sweet track (five minutes long i think)

the last track is huxley's "let it go" on the hypercolour label

love that fred p record

coal, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

me too, what i love about it is that it sounds good all the way from -8 to +8

the late great, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

i think on this mix it's almost all the way up to like 135 instead of 125 or whatever it normally is

the late great, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 17:52 (twelve years ago) link

like the way you can tell a fred p record within 5 seconds the way you can a rick wade record

coal, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

fred p is deeeeeeeeeep

Hi there. Not my mix but a couple of friends did a mix for Rubadub in Glasgow last Saturday. If you listen to it I hope you enjoy.

yah I feel this, fuck this. I just assumed that no one else really had to do this that often because people are just more skilled or whatever. Sometimes it kind of feels like playing the original mario or whatever and jumping in the same fuckin pit over and over again.

this is my new mix, the second one I've ever done, if you have it in your heart please give it a listen and tell me what needs to be done better

OMG that is the PERFECT analogy

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

the late great, i hate listening to your mixes because it makes me want ALL YOUR RECORDS.

i like this recent one, you're right it's much more ruff-n-ready than some of your previous ones, it makes it feel more like a party. you just dive in.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

You all know about just redoing the mix as needed while recording it then editing out the bad transition, right?

dan selzer, Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

(shhhhhh dan don't give it away!!)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

ahem i mean what, that's crazy, it would be like using cheat to win at mario bros

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

you mean overdubbing, dan?

i have tried to do that in the past but i am not so slick with things like logic and if i try to do it by re-beatmatching the ends of two split tracks together it invariably either gets off-beat (using traktor) or sounds like a dog's breakfast (using serato)

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

I am shameless about editing takes together. I find myself having to do this less and less tho!

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

No overdubbing or re-beatmatching.

Record A is playing. it's at a set tempo.

You beatmatch (or, god-forbid, "SYNC") record B.

You bring it record B in.

If you don't like the way it sounds, you pick up the needle on Record A and move it back to somewhere around where it was before you started bringing in B.

Do mix again.

If you're happy with it, keep on DJing.

Then when done, slice out the bad mix. So long as you didn't change the tempo on A during or between the two attempts, it will easily stitch back together.

dan selzer, Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

after putting some mixes together production-style (ie not real time at all) i tried doing something in Mixxx and almost had a heart attack.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

thanks for the tip though Rev, it's a cool program and i want to combine the two approaches.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

So different takes of the one transition, not re-doing an entire mix.

I don't record mixes enough, but when I do, I always do this. And if I didn't bother to do it because I thought my mix sounded good, if it doesn't, I'll just edit it, sometimes have a hard cut between songs. It works in real life, no reason not to do it in an actual mix.

dan selzer, Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

i will fess to having gone back several days afterwards to redo a particular mix: find the first half of the "problem" in the recorded mix and play it on your speakers; then get THAT SAME RECORD and match the tempo on deck A; put next record on deck B; redo mix

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 19 April 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

Then when done, slice out the bad mix

yeah i am just not savvy enough w/ any sort of sound editing software to do this

and i sort of like just re-doing the whole, it scratches that same itch i had as a kid that would make me play levels of sonic over and over just to get 100% of the coins w/o getting hit once, or quit in mortal kombat as soon as i got scratched or missed a fatality.
