Formed in 1985 by Jon Spencer and Julie Cafritz in Washington DC, Pussy Galore drew upon the bloated hardcore scene, totally rejecting the same while embracing 60's garage punk and R'n'B, industrial noise acts like Einsturzende Neubauten, and plenty of bad vibes and badder attitude. After a relocation to New York City in '86, the band quickly rose to prominence and infamy. Sold-out concerts and record releases were celebrated and debated in the pages of the Village Voice, Vanity Fair, and Art Forum. Pussy Galore toured across North America and throughout Europe, even making it to Japan before the band finally imploded.

Now this seminal and influential punk band's catalog is back in print, many of it available as digital download for the first time ever. Each release has been remastered under the supervision of Jon Spencer himself, vinyl masters are cut directly from the original tapes, all-analog. The classic 1987 album, 'Right Now', is available now on vinyl through Shove. This, along with 1988's 'SugarShit Sharp' EP and 1989's 'Dial M For Motherfucker' LP are available for download. Vinyl of SSS and Dial M will follow shortly and, as a special added bonus, a limited edition vinyl re-press of the original Pussy Galore debut 7" record, the' Feel Good About Your Body' EP, will be available for Record Store Day, also through Shove. America, get ready to feel good again!

On December 23rd of last year, Pussy Galore played an unannounced 15 song, 30 minute set at Maxwell's to a packed house, as part of Yo La Tengo's annual Hanukkah festival benefit. This one off 'secret' show would serve notice that one of New York City's great bands still has meaning for today. There are no further shows planned at this time.

Loved this band a good five or so years. Associate Right Now! with good times in Austin.

Checked these out via Spotify on the best quality download, and they sound really great. It's weird to talk about hearing new stuff on a PG remaster, but I do, so whatever.

i dunno, i've been listening to right now and dial m for a quarter century on vinyl. they sound not the way they're "supposed to sound", but they way they actually do sound, the way they've always sounded, like what they are. have never had any complaints with or heard any complaints about the sound. it's not like they're raw power or the first BOC album, something that always needed a tweak. dgi.

for comparison, new day rising could probably use a remaster. (i dunno, maybe it's already had one)

I'd guess that a lot of reviewers will agree, and I definitely agree that New Day Rising would be a more critical patient.

But...I've had them on vinyl and on CD (Caroline), and while there was never anything exactly *wrong* with them, I've always felt like Dial M (more than Right Now) could benefit from a sonic upgrade. Still feel like Dial M is one of those albums that's way better than the band should have ever been able to produce. Totally weird song structures, noise interludes that work, and some pretty memorable drum and guitar parts for a bunch of people pretending to be untalented scumbags. It's such a sonically weird record that I want to hear it as clearly (and loudly) as possible. New version seems to acheive that. I'm pretty happy with it...

Asking for a sonic upgrade on Pussy Galore is missing the point entirely

This is kind of weird: the remasters showed up on Spotify. Then, today, I was going to listen to them, and most of the songs were no longer available (this is in the US). On 'Dial M' only three remain, and all three are different versions than what's on the original album, but I have no idea where they're from. Undertaker, Dick Johnson, 1 Hour Later. Right Now has only two songs left, Wretch and New Breed. Anyone know where the "new" versions are from? I hear slight crowd noise in the background? Kind of strange...

Oh never mind. Spotify is pulling in tracks from In The Red without noting it. Annoying.
