And/or a video game based on that anti-drug PSA cartoon dog form (I think) ABC on Saturday morning cartoon blocks in the 80s or 90s?

Would provide pic but could not google this dog for the life of me.

exactly, i think he might have even had a super-serious hardboiled PIPE that he stoically sucked on while musing over which hunch to follow next

although upon reflection it may have just been a sam and max game..?

This morning I had a quick and weird Street Fighter dream, arranged in layers.

Front row: little 2" tall cute "big head" figurines of the SF2Turbo characters
Middle row: SF2Turbo cartridges, connected together on the sides, forming a wall a little bit taller than the figurines
Back row: SF2Turbo boxes, the boxes the games came in, again connected together on the sides and forming a wall a little bit taller than the cartridge wall.

All of these layers jiggled back and forth, I could not get around them, and it scared the shit out of me for some reason.

I dreamt last night that another Lego videogame was coming out. But they'd changed the "Lego" logo so that the "g" was on it's side, and I was all "AAAARRGGHH!!! NO NO NO THEY CAN'T DO THIS IT'S A TRAVESTY!!!"

I dreamt last night that I was in a giant shopping mall filled with nothing but video game stores, arcades, and 12 year olds. The only solid detail about it I remember is some kid walking just behind me the entire time dragging along this giant arcade cabinet like the priests dragging the piano in Un Chien Andalou. It was some shooting game and he was dragging it by the oversized rifle that was connected to the cabinet by a metal wire. It was kind of unsettling.

used to have quake 2 dreams where it was just hours and hours of brain-sim runthroughs of DM1 level - 'the edge'. at the time i worked for a software company that was in the process of getting bought out = 3 months of downtime = 6-8 hours of quake 2 everyday. some really bad sleep during those months, i'd always wake up feeling mentally exhausted

A Dead Space dream, fortunately not a scary one. Was on an enterprise style ship, plenty of civilian human passengers, with me as one of three military types. Lots of shops on board selling rucksacks and climbing gear and tools. Also lots of cupboards and drawers but virtually all of which seemed to be empty. Couldn't find any weapons. Fortunately I'd been equipped with a suit - by lowering myself into a machine which pressure-clamped the suit around me - and the suit I'd chosen allowed me to kill the aliens just by hugging them.

finally my hours on end bad company 2 playing has resulted in a dream

playing the game, noticed that an enemy soldier was far out into an ocean. so i went over and started firing elastic bands at him. He turned into a whale. and i turned into a giant. and so i just grabbed him. forgotten the rest.

minecraft dream too, about a month ago tho

The guy who created the game had announced a competition, he'd apparently introduced a secret animal (a bear or something) hidden in the game. and people had to send him pictures when they discovered it.
Then for some reason i found myself walking about inside the game with this same guy, chatting about some of the problems with the game, and we stumbled across a foot print of this bear. He casually looked at it and said to me "okay i'll take that as your entry into the comp"

Summer Slam! (Ste), Thursday, 16 February 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

but that was nothing to the fucking mother of all gaming dreams that i had last night. some mmorpg crossed with a novel, somehow i was reading this book and playing this game at the same time. it was as if the whole world was playing this game too, it was war but involving more espionage than flat out physical battles (but there was plenty of that).

very long but one distinct memory was looking out of my 'home' in the game and being tremendously happy as it was snowing and the graphics looked great, but also for some reason i was in New Jersey.
another time when i experience a 'game over' was when our teams spawn point got completely bombarded, and i was stuck in a hanger next to a burning F15 - just looking at it waiting for the damn thing to explode and kill me. which it did.

most other times the game itself resembled a colour version of nethack.

Summer Slam! (Ste), Thursday, 16 February 2012 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

and also after another game over point i remember having to start reading the book from the start again, but then realising that i didn't have to because the game over part was all part of the story and i could have just carried on reading!

Summer Slam! (Ste), Thursday, 16 February 2012 14:13 (twelve years ago) link

I had a Minecraft dream the other night.
Incredibly mundane though, I dreamt of putting ladder from my bedrock level mineshaft up to the surface.
Which I then proceeded to do in the game for real the next day.

treefell, Thursday, 16 February 2012 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

wise move.
also, make sure the surface isn't covered with anything. that way you get natural light at the bedrock level.

eight years pass...

not at all the intended use of this thread, but i bought Dreams (PS4) the other day and have been messing around with it. in one of my first experiments, i dropped a few hippopotamuses into a scene, thinking that they were just static models. i cloned a handful of smaller ones, and then made a big one at 400% size to tower over the rest. little did i know that when i hit "play" to try it out, they would actually move around and automatically follow/surround the player! it was absolutely terrifying and hilarious, watching my character get swarmed by this crew of poorly modeled giant purple animals.

anyone else ever try it? it's a bit overwhelming. i think if i were 12 and had all the time in the world to learn all the little subsystems, i'd be addicted

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

Yeah I went through most of the tutorials and played a bunch of the user creations. I hear you can play it in PSVR now.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

yeah - i'm holding off on PSVR until the PS5 implementation (assuming there will be one?), but i bet it would be really neat!

so how did you feel after going through most of the tutorials? worth the time and effort?

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

honestly, my #1 thought as i use/play it is "i wish i was using a keyboard and mouse for this"

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

I got this a while ago and frankly I'm stuck on the tutorials. need to spend some quality time with it. seen some incredible shit done with it

I got this a while ago and frankly I'm stuck on the tutorials. need to spend some quality time with it. seen some incredible shit done with it

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:54 (three years ago) link

it's fiddly AF but I think that's more me being old and not having much time as you say

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

my first goal is just to be able to put a couple characters into a scene and insert my own audio/dialogue. haven't gotten to those tutorials yet, but i assume there's a way to upload my own audio somewhere?

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

also I tried building a scene, dropped in just a couple of things and my 'thermometer' went up to 100 and it wouldn't let me do any more. not sure what that's all about

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

so there's 3 thermometers, i think - i didn't look into too much but it has to do with the amount of memory you're allotted for each scene. using lots of assets/elements uses up memory, and so does stuff like animation and logic

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

i'd guess that elements that are really detailed or have a lot of polygons will eat up a lot more of the memory than simple textures or objects

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

so how did you feel after going through most of the tutorials? worth the time and effort?

Ok, "most" is an exaggeration but I did a lot of them. I found them pretty intuitive, but the main issue I've had is with the controls. I am not very good at positioning the controller precisely enough to do what I want consistently. On the other hand, other aspects of it are very very intuitive to a shocking degree, so it's kind of a mixed bag.

It's also one of a subset of games that runs extremely hot on my system. Especially when you're putting a bunch of objects into a big scene it really had my fan going overtime, and once it even crashed my system. That was many months ago but it left a bad taste in my mouth and I kind of fell off using it.

I will say that making stuff is the most fun you will have in the game. The games people make are not fun enough to be the reason to get the game imo. But making stuff, even doing the intermediate tutorials, is really really enjoyable if you're wired that way.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 24 July 2020 17:36 (three years ago) link

awesome! that's exactly what i was hoping to hear. i'll keep at it for a while then, and see what it/i can do. it runs hot on my system, too. when i finally turned it off afterward the sudden silence was startling

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Friday, 24 July 2020 17:38 (three years ago) link

If you're curious about game logic rather than level/character design, I'd suggest digging into something like GDevelop, which is a great first engine:

stop your grinnin and drop your linnen, dreamt the best game ever last night.

It's massive multiplayer. Everyone owns a base around a simulated real world map. To get around to visit other players bases you need to travel via airports. At the airports is where the public social part comes in and people chat whilst waiting for their planes.

When I played last night the servers were busy and plane seats were all taken, it was a looong wait in the airports. But it was great hanging around with other players.

At your bases you can fly huge bomber planes that take forever to get anywhere but can bomb other players bases.

Yeah. Took me a couple of work hours this morning to realise this was not the major ground breaking game that I initially woke up thinking it was.
