I just got this!

Harmon suddenly realizes he's been kinda dumb

I'm glad, because the whole message of the show, repeated week after week, is that you can grow out of your own insecurities, and a sincere apology is always a good first step

Brakhage, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

though in Harmon's case it comes wrapped in juicy layers of celebratory self-deprecation

Brakhage, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

Note: Dan is Britta. I think he finally admitted that either this year or during the S2 commentaries.

Spleen of Hearts (kingfish), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

p sure his big epiphany was that he was abed

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 02:57 (twelve years ago) link

Harmon has claimed from the beginning that Britta is the character most closely based on / that he identifies w/, no "finally admitting"

┗|∵|┓ (sic), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 04:19 (twelve years ago) link

maybe he meant he puts on a blonde wig and a push up bra and literally IS Britta.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 04:21 (twelve years ago) link

Possibly, but I just most clearly remembering him talking about it in the S2 commentary tracks. So it goes.

I wish we could go back to the good old days of not knowing anything about an author musician or artist beyond what they make

am hoping this chevy/harmon thing is just a fake to stir up press interest

lol, you have plainly never read anything about either Chevy nor the Community cast's relationship w/ Chevy before

i thought he always said more that she's based on girls he knew or a type of girl he's an expert on?

some dude, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

funny britta is the closest to an easily-identifiable stereotype among the main characters

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

? they're pretty much all stereotypes

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

i guess so.... but britta and pierce seem to fit most easily into readymade types... the humorless political poseur and the cranky, hilariously inadept old guy....

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:11 (twelve years ago) link

the aspie nerd
the religious, family-oriented black woman
the narcissistic superficial lawyer
the prissy over-achiever

troy is kinda the least stereotypical character

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link

every person ever, real or fictional, is a "stereotype" if you reduce them to their most elemental demographic statistics or personal characteristics. plus it's just a horrible soul-killing way to talk about most things.

some dude, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah you're right n/a. never mind.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I think the characters are much more complex than that. For example, compare Abed to Sheldon Cooper, who really is a stereotypical Aspie nerd (or at least was the last time I watched BBT): first, Abed is extremely athletic and doesn't seem to have trouble attracting women; also, he often displays a greater insight into other people's thoughts and feelings and relationships than other characters do. It's much more ambiguous whether he actually has Asperger's. And he is a film student at a community college: his 'aspie' obsession is with films and TV, not with science or technology. I can't offhand think of a stereotypical nerd character anywhere else with that sort of fixation. The hyper-imaginative childhood-regression aspects of his character don't really seem to fit the stereotype either (thinking of Sheldon or Steve Urkel etc).

He has to be one of the most unique sitcom characters I can think of.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i think one of the show's greatest creative victories has been to keep letting Abed zig when other shows would have him zag

some dude, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:11 (twelve years ago) link

last night my friend claimed troy and abed were based on the "classic geordi laforge/lieutenant commander data pairing."

although there is a rough mapping of community characters to the star trek TNG bridge crew.

u kno, bc black guy + pale robot guy friends

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

"classic" geordi/data

makes them sound like fkn laurel and hardy

I love TNG but that's just kinda weird

last night my friend claimed troy and abed were based on the "classic geordi laforge/lieutenant commander data pairing."

actually, i totally see this.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

I can see Abed/Data, but Geordi/Troy doesn't work for me.

what's your objection? that it's more pasty than pale? xxp

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

maybe he thought you meant Geordi

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

but if chevy is riker, who is troi?

techno pink (reddening), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

Troy is Jordy in that he is the link connecting/translating Abed/Data to the human world of irrational feelings etc etc.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

uh the description of abed as "pale" was what i was questioning

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

well.... he's paler than Troy?

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

he was describing Data as pale

is it really going to turn into that conversation

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 20:55 (twelve years ago) link

some dude, u may also be surprised by the fact that abed is not a robot.
