“Our youngest writer was Donald Glover. He had just graduated from NYU’s writing program and was still living in a dorm and working as an RA. Donald was our only African American writer at the time, but his real diversity was that he was our only “cool young person” who could tell us what the “kids were listening to these days.” Also, because he came from a large family in Georgia, he was very helpful in writing for the character Kenneth the Page. His MVP joke: a scene where Jenna (Jane Krakowski) is trying to teach Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) how to brag about himself in a passive-aggresive way:
JENNA: Not even a “back door” brag?
KENNETH: What’s a “back door” brag?
JENNA: It’s sneaking something wonderful about yourself into everday conversation. Like when I tell people, “It’s hard for me to watch ‘American Idol,’ because I have perfect pitch.”
KENNETH: Oh… ew.
JENNA: Now you try.
KENNETH: It’s hard for me to watch “American Idol” ‘cause there’s a water bug on the channel changer.

but yes i'm referring to donald glover. joel mchale has a side project where he's greg kinnear, alison brie has one where she's trudy campbell, jim rash won an oscar for some alexander payne movie (as embarrassing as childish gambino surely), yvette nicole brown seems very nice, gillian jacobs listens to npr, chevy chase switched bodies w/ benji once, and danny pudi is pretty clearly the best actor on the show.

yvette nicole brown is on the new "pound puppies" cartoon that my son sometimes watches in the morning after "fraggle rock"! one day i listened for a sec and was like "is that shirley?"

Harmon suddenly realizes he's been kinda dumb
I'm glad, because the whole message of the show, repeated week after week, is that you can grow out of your own insecurities, and a sincere apology is always a good first step
― Brakhage, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago) link
though in Harmon's case it comes wrapped in juicy layers of celebratory self-deprecation
― Brakhage, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link
Note: Dan is Britta. I think he finally admitted that either this year or during the S2 commentaries.

― JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 02:57 (twelve years ago) link
Harmon has claimed from the beginning that Britta is the character most closely based on / that he identifies w/, no "finally admitting"

maybe he meant he puts on a blonde wig and a push up bra and literally IS Britta.

funny britta is the closest to an easily-identifiable stereotype among the main characters
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 17:58 (twelve years ago) link
? they're pretty much all stereotypes
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link
i guess so.... but britta and pierce seem to fit most easily into readymade types... the humorless political poseur and the cranky, hilariously inadept old guy....
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:11 (twelve years ago) link
the aspie nerdthe religious, family-oriented black womanthe narcissistic superficial lawyerthe prissy over-achiever
troy is kinda the least stereotypical character
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link
every person ever, real or fictional, is a "stereotype" if you reduce them to their most elemental demographic statistics or personal characteristics. plus it's just a horrible soul-killing way to talk about most things.
― some dude, Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:29 (twelve years ago) link
yeah you're right n/a. never mind.
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I think the characters are much more complex than that. For example, compare Abed to Sheldon Cooper, who really is a stereotypical Aspie nerd (or at least was the last time I watched BBT): first, Abed is extremely athletic and doesn't seem to have trouble attracting women; also, he often displays a greater insight into other people's thoughts and feelings and relationships than other characters do. It's much more ambiguous whether he actually has Asperger's. And he is a film student at a community college: his 'aspie' obsession is with films and TV, not with science or technology. I can't offhand think of a stereotypical nerd character anywhere else with that sort of fixation. The hyper-imaginative childhood-regression aspects of his character don't really seem to fit the stereotype either (thinking of Sheldon or Steve Urkel etc).

yeah i think one of the show's greatest creative victories has been to keep letting Abed zig when other shows would have him zag
