Budokan is not the world, apparently

Perky "Rest of World" has own Government, Laws(, Culture).

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 2 April 2012 12:52 (twelve years ago) link

In fairness Steve Albini (whose ATP it was) did put them in the big room and The Fall downstairs in the little room, which is is not the best decision I have ever seen.

It's the best decision I've ever seen.

Cannot imagine my life without "Surrender" tbh

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 April 2012 13:28 (twelve years ago) link

Think I prob first heard "Surrender" in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Monday, 2 April 2012 13:45 (twelve years ago) link

this thing where more people in the UK want to go to see the Fall than Cheap Trick is possibly the biggest UK/US divide I've learned about from ILX

gimme prizza (crüt), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

I think the first time I heard Surrender was in Over the Edge

and I am an American who would totally go see the Fall instead of Cheap Trick

but Surrender still owns

the guy was ugly human (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

I would go see the fall AND cheap trick but given the choice I would go w/cheap trick

gimme prizza (crüt), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

I first heard it in "over the edge" which used to on HBO constantly when I was a kid and has a pretty awesome soundtrack.

I really did not get The Fall until one day in 2011 I suddenly loved them. It was weird.

dayo, Monday, 2 April 2012 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

More people at ATP would rather go see The Fall than Cheap Trick - most people in the UK have never heard of either - which in Cheap Trick's case is possibly the real UK/US divide.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 2 April 2012 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

Wow, this rush of Cheap Trick love is roughly analogous to the time Richard Harris album sales spiked in the wake of Weird Al dropping "Jurassic Park".

Speaking as an Amurrican, I probably like the Fall more than Cheap Trick, who did have a handful of unassailable songs (everyone forgets the UBER classics like "Southern Girls" and "Elo Kiddies").

Marty McBrundlefly (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

I love the Fall, have seen them live half a dozen times, but couldn't turn down the opportunity to see Cheap Trick. Anyway I'm taking this to ILM to prevent further derailment.

I don't believe the world revolves around the United States of America, but I have to admit I've been shocked that the entire Planet Earth hasn't been dancing to the classic rock hits of Cheap Trick or REO Speedwagon all these years.

A few months ago, my Australian bride and I finally had the WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN YOU'VE NEVER HEARD "MR. ROBOTO"? conversation.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to this Tesla bootleg.

don't cheapen Cheap Trick by lumping them in with REO Speedwagon

gimme prizza (crüt), Monday, 2 April 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

I do think that to the average Briton Cheap Trick probably sounds like the Status Quo with more spunk or something, whereas in the US they were first-wave new-wave, grouped together with Blondie and The Cars, y'know: almost punk!

do not google Status Quo + more spunk, for the love of god

I knew Surrender from Fast Times At Ridgemont High, plus Dream Police and If You Want My Love, and of course The Flame and Don't Be Cruel which were briefly favorite songs when I was 13 when my ears were still made of wood.

Mr Veg helped me fill in the blanks and then The Sex-America-Cheap Trick box set changed my life permanently, Cheap Trick-wise.

I didn't know anything about Journey, or Tesla til I moved here...I knew REO Speedwagon though.

I think "your mama" insults are kinda common in the US too...? Anyway, even if it's a "Latin" thing, I wonder what are roots of it? I guess mothers are held in higher esteem in Latin countries than in Northern Europe, for example...
