roger noted VOODOO LOUNGE on my albums pallot (and 2 songs from it on my tracks ballot) and said i should defend it itt. i think it's aged really well, at least compared to anything since or a decade or so beforehand.
― Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link
My 80s-and-beyond shortlist is at 21 tracks already btw, I'm still gonna have some weeding to do xp
Voodoo Lounge is really, really good btw, it made this morning a joy.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link
Something went a bit wrong mid-80s though, Dirty Work is almost a write-off. I think it's the drum sound.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link
btw i didn't mean "explain yourself!" or nothin'... just, without commenting on any ballots I can say that going in I expected the real Big Reveal in the album results to be #5 and it's cool to see the love get spread around. I can't say I voted for it, but it's the last record where it felt like the Stones managed a few minutes of relevance. Like, that Fincher vid was all over the MTV.

there's just vast swathes of their catalog I haven't listened to and, frankly, don't feel like investigating right now - and everything I like is obvious and gonna get voted for anyway so eh whatever
― You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, March 30, 2012
imma get sincere for a sec and say, see, this is why you SHOULD vote. your idiosyncratic experience of the catalog as someone who Loves Music is at least as valuable as any imagined Expert Assessment.*
...
*or at least, this is the rationale by which I allowed myself to cut a ton of classic and historically significant and Important stuff off my ballot in favor of tracks that for whatever reason have mattered deeply to me at various times in my life.

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, i didn't let being unfamiliar with "vast swathes" of their catalog (well most anything post 1980?) stop me from voting.
― tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
I was super-intimidated going in bc everyone was talking about songs and albums I didn't know. I tried to get down with a couple of albums I hadn't heard, that yielded maybe 1 song that i would vote for...but most of them were songs that had already burrowed their way in, and fuck it, there's nothing wrong with that.
follow your heart shakey! <3
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link
it goes beyond anything post-1980 tho. don't think I've ever listened to the entirety of Between the Buttons or Aftermath, for ex. or Goat's Head Soup. Or It's Only Rock n Roll... I mean I have a *bunch* of Stones stuff but there's all kinds of things I never bothered to track down/sort out (their pre-70s catalog is a mess - almost as bad as the Kinks!) and I mean does Brown Sugar really need any more votes etc
― You big bully, why are you hitting that little bully? (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:44 (twelve years ago) link
Aw just vote & don't fret about it, it makes the countdown more fun.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link
xpost yes! if it's a song you like then fuck it, why not?
Listen to what you like, dude. You sound almost exactly like where I was at. Give your favorite albums a relisten, maybe listen to one that you don't go back to very often, and just go with your gut.
too much overthinking will make a ballot with a bunch of songs that you don't actually care about, and what's the point of that?

Curious to see how many votes "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" gets vs. "(first half of) Can't You Hear Me Knocking."

― grandavis, Friday, 30 March 2012 19:49 (twelve years ago) link
Uh, "Satisfaction" that is.
who the hell would only vote for the first half?
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago) link
Hah, as a kid I totally shut "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" off halfway through! Dig it all now.

I do dig it all, but there was definitely a time when I didn't.

i wouldn't be surprised if "Satisfaction" gets the shaft. "Whole Lotta Love" was outside the top 20 of the Zep poll iirc!
love all of "Knocking" so much. the second half is WHY it stands out!

second half of "knockin'" does drag if i'm not in the right mood. 1st half is always gold.

so many big Stones radio staples are these tight 3-minute singles that it's nice to occasionally hear that one big sprawling AOR noodlefest imo
― Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Friday, 30 March 2012 19:59 (twelve years ago) link
you don't vote for sway, i don't vote for satisfaction, it all works out. respect the rad use of guitar fx and maybe having to sing it in a cover band soured me a bit but, as discussed above, much as i respect it and even dig it, i've never loved it like i have others. so.
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Friday, 30 March 2012 19:59 (twelve years ago) link
holy crap, you voted for Cant You Hear Me Knocking, Ismael? I thought it was all 80's all the time with you? :)
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago) link
Haven't voted yet, I'm just lining them up. I may have to persuade the missus (an occasional poster) to fill in the gaps for me.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 30 March 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link
Satisfaction still kicks me in the face whenever I listen to it. Also I always get caught up in thinking how much it must have blown people's wigs back when they first played it on the radio. I mean, what the hell else even sounded remotely like that?
Also the story behind the DIY guitar sound is awesome (I think it's in Keef's book or on the NPR interview with Terri Gross)
