thx for the pleasant words, jjjusten, esp since in my pre-senility or general drunkenness I don't remember the FAP we met. At.

It was at some patio in NYC w laurel and ally and vic? Plus others and there were vague attempts made to make it to a boredoms show but instead my (future) wife and I got shithoused and ended up walking back to park slope for like 5 hours totally lost. Either that or some other nice dude in NYC is prob still confused as to why some hammered asshole kept referring to him as dr. Morbius every so often in a bar, which is more possible than I would like to admit.

Morbs's response is probably worth noting:

jjj, the infamous outdoor line to nowhere at 7/7/07? I might've met you there, but as soon as none of us (except JonW) got in, I lost everybody and went home, no bars. So it was probably someone else.

its like when mario balotelli gave £3000 of his winnings to a vagrant outside a casino and ppl were like oh god that dude just went and overdosed in a dumpster

turns out he never did give the money but the moral of the story was thought to stand nonetheless -- england likes morality tales about the fecklessness of the indigent and damned

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

Once upon a time, for example, I barely noticed whether a British politician was Scottish, but once six geldings and a coach with four horses were dispatched to bring the king to England and James left Edinburgh for his month-long journey through his new kingdom through the beautiful spring weather, and all the prisoners in Newcastle were released except those accused of "treason, murther and papistrie", and all those gaoled for debt had their debts paid off, and in York a conduit ran all day with white wine and claret and at Worksop the king was entertained by "excellent, soule-ravishing musique" by the Earl of Shrewsbury, I became uneasy.

That's funny, I always thought it was one of those songs that everyone kinda knew

But I guess there's really no such thing as that kinda song, lol

Cheap Trick much better known in the US of A than to Britishers, I think?

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Monday, 2 April 2012 11:06 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, "I Want You To Want Me" is their only charting song over here. Never heard Surrender till last year, unimpressed tbh.

I saw them at a UK ATP about 10 years ago, they played to a crowd of about 200 tops. Despite this, they were excellent.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Monday, 2 April 2012 11:21 (twelve years ago) link

I think it was the ilm '70s poll that introduced me to Cheap Trick and iirc a lot of the non-Americans didn't know who they were then either

Number None, Monday, 2 April 2012 11:30 (twelve years ago) link

Total classic. Cheap Trick and the original surrender, I mean.

In fairness Steve Albini (whose ATP it was) did put them in the big room and The Fall downstairs in the little room, which is is not the best decision I have ever seen.

Cannot imagine my life without "Surrender" tbh

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 2 April 2012 13:28 (twelve years ago) link

Think I prob first heard "Surrender" in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Monday, 2 April 2012 13:45 (twelve years ago) link

this thing where more people in the UK want to go to see the Fall than Cheap Trick is possibly the biggest UK/US divide I've learned about from ILX

gimme prizza (crüt), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

I think the first time I heard Surrender was in Over the Edge

and I am an American who would totally go see the Fall instead of Cheap Trick

the guy was ugly human (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:10 (twelve years ago) link

but Surrender still owns

the guy was ugly human (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

I would go see the fall AND cheap trick but given the choice I would go w/cheap trick

gimme prizza (crüt), Monday, 2 April 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

I first heard it in "over the edge" which used to on HBO constantly when I was a kid and has a pretty awesome soundtrack.

I really did not get The Fall until one day in 2011 I suddenly loved them. It was weird.

dayo, Monday, 2 April 2012 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

More people at ATP would rather go see The Fall than Cheap Trick - most people in the UK have never heard of either - which in Cheap Trick's case is possibly the real UK/US divide.
