it's the distillation of what i like about the stones
loose, groovy, sleazy, loud what more do you want? it has everything a person could ask for aside from a new pair of balls

also: fantastic Charlie drumming (love when he switches to using the hi-hat) and the best enunciation of "Pavlov dog" in rock history.

^^ "pavlov dog" and charlie's turnaround are actually the only things that gave me a half-second's hesitation about cutting it loose

No objection here to extending balloting -- I hope it results in more votes! It's impossible to know if there are many ilxors out there who were on the fence about voting if only they had more time.

i for one am in no rush to stop re-listening pre-vote. i go in cycles of bingeing on bands and the stones' turn came right on time

i'm skeptical that a deadline will prevent ppl from voting -- i suspect it's more the scope of the task/decisions

i'm down for extending the listening party for an extra two days, with ballots due the same time on Sunday, April 1. i'd still be able to roll out results on the same calendar.

Running through the catalogue chronologically, as I've been doing, it seems like there's not much there that isn't basically American after about 1968, except Mick's cab driver on 'Too Much Blood' and one or two other curios like that. But I get that it might not sound that way to yawl.

Yes and yes. A whole lot of subsequent American bands sounded more like the Stones than the Stones' sources, but their early sound screams British Invasion.

I like Jagger's fake redneck accent all right on "Dead Flowers" but it totally ruins "Far Away Eyes" for me, just like his fake patois ruins "Cherry Oh Baby."

harping back to "child of the moon", there's something detached about it, and mysterious -- an anomaly in the Stones canon for me, given how direct and pragmatic their approach to songwriting usually strikes me as. it's dreamy enough to get lost in, with those loose, stretched vocal harmonies that are in no hurry to get anywhere, yet somehow stands as an immaculately crafted rock song with hook by way of sublime chord change. my favourite Stones songs are often the unrepentant sleaze-ridden rockers, which build their mettle on bare-boned riff and howl. but as far as their tender stuff goes, "child of the moon" is right up there for me.

lol, that's so strange to me, cuz "california" is the last association i'd make. it reminds me strongly of the early velvet underground, especially "all tomorrow's parties" and even "venus in furs" to some extent. though it does work as a pop song, it has a weird, glassy-eyed inertness and vacancy that only amplify its allure. hell, it's practically a drone. so spooky.

yeah, i find it weird that mick thought this could be a hit...can't remember what was on the b-side, but it was one of their monster hits I think...

Listening to Brussels Affair (thanks to Tarfumes/Tylerw for recommendation) --- the Keys solo in "Can't Always Get What You Want" is so gorgeous, I wish it was on the original. My god.

also Keith doing 'Happy' made me very. Kinda feel like I should've rethought about voting for it. idk.

yeah contenderizer, i definitely hear some VU sound-wise. both "child" and a song like "all tomorrow's parties" channel something exotic, stoned and distant. lyrically and thematically, i can see how the California thing ties in. i mean, underlying VU's work was a certain street-swagger, self-awareness and poise, which gave even their most abstract songs a defined edge. the Stones obviously exhibited this too in a bunch of their songs, but there's something naive and idealistic about "child of the moon", which i find pretty charming. what is kind of surprising is that it was a calculated move on their part, because even if it was just a one-off of sorts, it sounds natural and inspired.

I've never really gotten all the way into the Stones like rock/pop fanatics are supposed to, so beyond the singles I mostly know Exile, Aftermath, Sticky Fingers and to a somewhat lesser extent Beggars & Let it Bleed. All terrific records of course, and Emotional Rescue was a pleasant Spotify surprise a couple weeks back, but I can't imagine omitting more than half a dozen of the tracks previously compiled on Hot Rocks, which I've loved to pieces since high school. Fucking dilettante, I know. But I wanna vote in this, so I guess I'll be that guy.

before you do vote, at least consider listening to some of the less well-known stuff posted itt. promise you won't regret it.
