Rockism is a word that would describe the musical genre of rock and
roll. It consists of the basic rock guitar, guitar bass, and drums,
but it's more of an authentic popular pop music that fits the
construction of true rock and roll. It originated in Britain and it is
the orientation of criticizing popular music. Rockism uses technology
such as synthesizers and pro-tool styles and computer program systems.
This type of music places value toward the composer and the artist;
which they use their music as a strong form of self-expression.
Rockism is the complete opposite of manufactured "pop" music because
manufactured pop music isn't written for self-expression but more for
how well the music sells and how well it can be pushed as a "product".
Not only that, but the pop stars have little to no input in what is
happening to their music and that is not what rockism is about.
Rockism is to express all of the feelings you have into one great song
and you get to choose how your song sounds and how you put it out to
all of your fans. One way to put rockism greatly is that one time in
history, people and musicians just got the music right.

Sufjan Stevens is a famous folk/electronica artist compared to
Deerhoof who plays harsh sounding music. Stevens' music is
extraordinary because he isn't like every type of music that is out
there. His music like his name is very creative; while Deerhoof also
has creative lyrics their music completely throws me off, I enjoy
Stevens' calm beautiful lyrics. His lyrics are not only out there but
very creative and I love listening to that. You can tell that he
enjoys doing what he's doing because he seems to put his heart and
soul into his music, and you can see that lyrically. I also enjoy the
fact that everything he writes about he creatively ties his family and
God into his lyrics and I am amazed by that. Deerhoof has tightly
composed songs and doesn't seem to loosen up and just have a fun
performance that Stevens does. He is such a genius that he has decided
to write a CD for each state and no one comes up with things like
this. He is brilliant with his music and is so creative that you can't
help but to love his music and what he comes up with. And that's why I
think Sufjan Stevens is one of the best folk artists out there.

I am certain it is. I created a website in class about musical influences and i used that picture as a link to her wikipedia page. I found this picture posted in a review section on a page called mercurialsound.com which was a music review and show notification site. the site has been closed or isn't working right now but the image is hosted through photobucket. I have chosen this because she looks angry and somewhat powerful. I can post a less favorite picture if you would like me to

2) A mystical process by which the next saviour of rock is chosen. Every three-and-a-half years it is performed by the Grand Cabal of Reviewers from an undisclosed location. About as underground as it comes, little is known of the members of this secretive cult, though some say Pitchfork has recently managed to weasel their way in. Rumours abound of chanted incantations and epic musical orgies, but little birdies tend to agree that it mostly involves sitting around, smoking fags, and BSing like a blind cat loaded on methamphetamine. For it hath been foretold that our lord The Velvet Underground might rise again. And lo, their reincarnated spirit shall spit flaming guitars upon the world, waves of blissful distortion expunging the land of our putrid clear-channel oppressors. And upon the release of their fourth LP, rapture shall take hold, a Stairway to Heaven rising tall. For it is written, and thus it shall be.

3) I'm oh-so-tempted to hunt down a picture symbolizing some sort of metaphorical union between PETA and the Civil Rights movement. But that sounds hard, and I'm lazy.

-cuz she makes for a convincing enough boy that I want to do her...and cuz I'm totally a pothead.

4) Is any artist truly "better?" I think about the objective versus the subjective a lot. I guess I do believe in objective markings of excellence, but as of now I have not been able to find a consistent and coherent platform to base that idea upon. So: I like Deerhoof. Their music is challenging. It's weird (A+ in my Book of Personal Taste). Their lead singer subverts the standard paradigm of what a "good singer" should sound like. And, hey, they still retain the ability to write catchy tunes. Complicating this is the fact that Sufjan is a badass, managing to expand the musical vocabulary of pop music with intelligence and beauty. He's also really cute, what with that buck-toothed charm. But Deerhoof have "Siriustar." And so they win. Arbitrary subjectivity at its best.

5) One is all my heart desires.

Wheeeeeee. That was kind of fun. Thanks for making this so easy to find. I have, like, non-existant social networking skills, so there was no chance of me finding someone willing to drop an invite upon my sorry ass.

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum), Rockism is like any other ism. It's the idea that certain genres of rock, or certain artists or bands are supierior to others. Rockism differs from the other ism though, in that there's an actual basis for the assertations of superiority. Certain musicians and genres are superior because they make real music, music that is expressive, creative and free of the confines of pop music. Rockism condemns musicians that don't create their own music and labells them as unauthentic. Rockism, really, is the advancement of true, genuine, good music. That's all I have to say, though I have two more sentences to fill up. I could quote something from the wikipedia entry on rockism like everyone else has, but I won't.,

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power,
http://harpmagazine.com/img/articles/200602_086.jpg,

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum), Uhhhh. That's not easy to decide. Sufjan is folk with a twist. His music is simple, yet is emotinal and evocative. Sufjan also wins points for being cute and having completely orginal titles for his songs. Deerhoof is more upbeat. Definatley creative, different, but for me way less emotional. While I definatly think Deerhoof are talented and awesome, music speaks to me on an emotional level, so I guess I'd pick Sufjan's more mellow more emotive songs.,

5) How many invites do you require?, Just 1. Pretty pretty please

2) What is rockism? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
Rockism is an ideology that emphasizes authenticity as a component of popular music. Rockism is wary of the use of technology in music because it poses a threat to authenticity. Those who embrace rockist ideals feel that such technology leads to music without soul. They believe music has the ability to change lives through raw expression of emotion and truth, but only "authentic" music can do so. As its name would imply, Rockism feels rock is a pure creation of art which reflects upon the Romantic ideals of an artist. Music like pop is shunned by rockists because its repetitive and has a fake atmosphere to it. The common view amongst rockists is that pop embodies everything rock should not be--mass produced, commercialized, and dehumanized. Rockists not only dislike pop, though; in the 1980s, UK critics felt metal music was unauthentic because it promoted commercialism and distance from the audience. In general, rockism places an exceedlingly heavy emphasis on authenticity in music, and unsurprisingly, favors the rock genre.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)
I feel Sufjan Stevens is a better artist. I really feel Deerhoof is limited by Satomi's singing style. They have a lot of nice, albeit unconventional, rhythms going on in their songs, but Satomi's voice really doesn't seem to fit in with the music. Even though they've been together from 1994, their music really plays them off as slightly unorganized--almost like they are testing out a new style with new band members. On the other hand, this is, expectedly, not seen in Sufjan Steven's music since he is the only one making it. I feel his talent shows in his use of multitrack recording to create a song that is well structured and flows very well. I enjoy listening to the more mellow of Sufjan's tracks, as opposed to his upbeat ones. It is in these songs that Sufjan's vocal capabilities really shine. For me, vocals play a large part in whether I enjoy music or not, and whereas Deerhoof seems limited by them, Sufjan Stevens thrives on them.

5) How many invites do you require?
I would like one for myself.

I've waited a little over a week and haven't heard anything. As such, was I rejected? If so, can I re-apply at some point in the future?

Thanks so much for your help!
