And like, in a non-jokey, point-by-point manner, if possible? I keep trying to read that morass and get totally lost.

beachville, Saturday, 24 March 2012 11:09 (twelve years ago) link

- aimless claims that if we weren't farming them for food, species of domesticated livestock would disappear (so it is implicit that we're doing them a favour)
- he then says that if we didn't have those livestock, we'd just make more humans to fill up that land, so wild species wouldn't benefit anyway (so it is implicit that we might as well just keep farming livestock for food, since other animals wouldn't be better off)
- he also claims that the only way to know a cow as an individual is to milk it ("There's nothing like having to milk a herd of cows by hand to let you know they are individuals and to begin to treat them in that way"), so because vegans don't eat dairy and therefore would never milk a cow, they have no way to understand cows as individuals (this clearly disregards the fact that many vegans were not always so, and that some vegans grew up on farms). he follows that up with a guess that somewhat contradicts this, saying that he thinks 98% of vegans have no firsthand experience of farm animals (again, implicit is the fact that only seeing second-hand the abuse of farm animals is somehow not really worth talking about)
- he then takes this responding quote from nickb: "I'm not sure of the relevance of this, but it's a pretty obvious logical step to take when you see a piece of meat to assume that an animal has been killed" and somehow extrapolates from it that most vegans think farm workers are monsters, and begins to mount a defense of all farm workers
- he then makes a long theoretical post that in sum posits vegans (group a) as judgmental and misinformed, and farmworkers (group b) as victims of this. apparently, unless you personally have witnessed abuse of farm animals or met a farm-factory worker, it's not possible for you to have an informed opinion on the care of farm animals.

- everyone tells him he is not-otm, and multiple people try to point out that a. no one said all farm workers are monsters and b. for most vegans it's irrelevant how good the care is of the animals if they're being treated as possessions and slaughtered.

- of note: most of the people telling aimless he is not-otm are not even vegan.

TOP COMEDY FILMS POLL RESULTS: we are not sure what "top" or "comedy" means

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:11 (twelve years ago) link

yeah its a poll, not a clusterfuck.

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

yet

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:17 (twelve years ago) link

Dr Morbius,

What do you object to in the comedy poll exactly? Just people's ballot choices? My own list was surprisingly Whitebread American, but since my template for comedy was forged by early degraded clamshell VHS tapes from a suburban library, I guess it's kind of bound to be a little blinkered and WASPy. I purposefully didn't want to practice any tokenism or curatoring, so I read through the list and winnowed out the ~ 100ish movies that had given me the most pleasure and humor (and most of these, unsurpisingly, fit an Aristotilian comedic form), and further winnowed, and ended up with 60ish movies that had brought me the most delght. There wasn't any higher level of thought – comedy's essentially a sensory experience for me – and I ranked movies pretty arbitrarily as 'great' 'good' 'worthy' and 'important and amusing but not as good as the rest.' I'm curious to know why you object to the poll so far: it seems okay(ish), if a little perplexing.

I mean, by now it should be obvious Morbius will find fault in any and every movie-related poll/discussion/opinion there is.

there's a reason morbz hangs out here, the outshoot of a music board, and not on one of the numerous music buff forums all over the internet. it's bc he gets to be the king of movies here and [almost] no one can call him out on it.

Mordy, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

and (almost) no one can be bothered to call him out on it.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

i meant 'one of the numerous film buff forums' typo*

Mordy, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

I think it's because he secretly likes us and all the terrible movies we enjoy

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

The reason I don't feel bad giving Dr More BS a hard time is bc he obviously lives to be abused.

Just thought about what I posted in the elevator and it's actually correct. Not that I believe he finds the abuse fun, but he craves it and does everything he can to incite it.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:12 (twelve years ago) link

chuckling at you printing out that post on your amazing work printer and carefully taping it up in the elevator

kinder, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago) link

loool. me too.

the lawyers downstairs put up our building's march madness brackets in the elevator, so i should feel free to stick up important ILX posts.

I Love Baseball brought me here, and I'd say I wish I'd stayed there if it wasn't infected as well.

remy, what I "object to" is ppl with not the slightest interest in pre-Mel Brooks film comedy wasting my time. But I don't really, cuz goddamn me.

You guys need to remember I hate myself at least as much as you do. But thx for all the kindness.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 02:34 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think anyone hates you, Morbs, fwiw. I don't, anyway.

Also, you would do well to not extrapolate a lack of interest from a lack of exposure. I, for one, am looking forward to tackling these old folks films everyone seems to love.

The Itchy And Scratchy Glowbo Blow (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 March 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago) link

Morbs just has a few hobby horses and sometimes he rides them hard, like we all do. God knows I have mine and I share a few of them with the good Dr. Morbius. No hate coming from this quarter.

zooey bechamel (Trayce), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:02 (twelve years ago) link

You complain about "no one knowing you" because you're not a complete dick IRL, but ILX is the only way I know you and here the VAST majority of your contributions here are nasty, condescending, and generally negative, so that's the Bill W. I know and I don't like him.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:18 (twelve years ago) link

could a mod remove the dumb "now with C. Thomas Howell" part of the thread title?

sarahell, Friday, 30 March 2012 03:19 (twelve years ago) link

There are a number of people I know from ILX who I've never met IRL but I like them and in a way even love them based on what their posts say about them. xp

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:19 (twelve years ago) link

I mostly find Morbs to be pretty amusing in an absurdly grouchy way. It can be a little annoying when anyone just stomps into a thread to throw out a condescending put-down, but there were irl lols when Sherlock Jr. placed and there just HAD to be a comment about how Real Keaton Fans don't like The General.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:21 (twelve years ago) link

I've laughed aloud at some of his posts and sometimes I see posts make him seem actually interesting as a person and even likable, but those are rare.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:22 (twelve years ago) link

I think he's an okay bloke

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:25 (twelve years ago) link

zooey bechamel (Trayce), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

When someone comes along playing the victim after being as unceasingly aggressive and nasty as he has been I don't think some measured critical observations count as piling on.

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago) link

That said, believe it or not, I'm not trying to pick a fight.
