something horrible is going on over at Kill Screen

also in what way was that review a "difficult read"

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Friday, 23 March 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

it's hard to read w/ a hand in front of your face

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 23 March 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

not excusing the review but a lot of the first half is the reviewer interpolating AB's lyrics into the text of the review. you may know this, you may not.

also some ghostface lyrics

come on a #KONY (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 March 2012 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

i guess its a difficult read if you dont realise that?

just sayin, Friday, 23 March 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

idk i think it's pretty obvious that weiss paraphrasing the music he's referencing... i mean, nobody writes like that

come on a #KONY (J0rdan S.), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago) link

except Brent DiCrescenzo

I've never listened to AB before so I thought it was more of a schreiber does coltrane kind of thing

dayo, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I figured most of those lyrics were quotes but its still really hacky and stupid

but not actually unreadable

i may have a vested interest here but this review really bothered me:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/16309-the-end-of-that/

"[L]ike so much of the record, it initially sounds plainspoken and charming until you realize absolutely nobody talks like that."

criticizing a song for not sounding like people... talk??

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago) link

^Actually unreadable

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:13 (twelve years ago) link

And people actually do talk like that.

beachville, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

haha that's a weird criticism

is that dude's platonic ideal of lyric writing "Popular" by Nada Surf

THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:24 (twelve years ago) link

people in movies don't actually talk like people do irl

dayo, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

people don't say irl in person!

bnw, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:26 (twelve years ago) link

I have no idea about that album but I think this is a valid criticism in some form. It bothered me in Clerks b/c the whole appeal of that movie was that it was supposedly "real talk"!

people don't say irl in person!

they say "meatspace"

duke of irl

bnw, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

And people actually do talk like that

i've never heard the album, or even heard of the band, but anyone who talks like this needs to have their mouth privileges revoked:

"...fucked-up bumblebee/ Headed for the potpourri...You turn me on so with your bee-sting lips/ And your pepper-grinder hips/ Like a thread in the needle/ We're just typical people"

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

is it just me or is it a a bit weird that pfork runs a long review of the new amadou & mariam album (one that longs for more sounds of their homeland) without the slightest mention of the military coup currently taking place in mali?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

i mean i dont expect more than a passing reference but it seems to say... something... about... something. i dunno.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

tbh Mark I wouldn't have even heard about the coup myself were it not for ____.

mom in the woods (Ówen P.), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:00 (twelve years ago) link

Ugh sorry I meant s1ocki

mom in the woods (Ówen P.), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

me neither! but i'm not writing a long article about malian music either...

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

haha i didnt even notice.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:01 (twelve years ago) link

I can't think of any easy way to comment on a two-week old coup within a review that mentions Jake Shears and TVOTR guest spots.

mom in the woods (Ówen P.), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

i dunno, it just seems to say something about how little context we get with our global supermarket of pop music, fwiw

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

its also somewhat possible that the review was written before the coup began

yeah, it's a bit weird. but no more than that.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link

i think the drop-down for coup announcements is in the "news" tab.

like a musical album. made by a band. (fucking in the streets), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

uh, good observation. i mean, you expect pitchfork to go back and have their pop music review tweaked to incorporate current world events?

stan this sick bunt (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

yes, if i was the editor, i would prob do that so as to not seem completely clueless

i think its funny how hes constantly reassuring ppl that nothing is actually problematic or racist or offensive or sexist or etc. etc. -- seems like hes doing a lot of minimizing all the time

D-40, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

dude, if you ever bothered to think for a moment about anything you read/type, you'd realize that i spend a fuck of a lot of time on ILX calling out shit as racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. way more so than most posters. you've just decided to make a big psycho issue out of this because i don't always agree with you.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

I love how dick-waving on ILX essentially amounts to who can call the most people racist
