xp Yeah that's just weird. I don't really want to defend either of these people, haha. I just want to send the world to Lex's Finishing School of Grace and Respectability. My Grandma was my professor. I still don't wear navy & black together, either.

Wow, that exchange mh just posted is... wtf? Don't advertise a meeting that you haven't actually arranged and then suggest the person not going is the one being nasty about it. What a major-league douche.

dayo, Thursday, 5 April 2012 11:40 (twelve years ago) link

Discussed / LOL'd at this a bit on the Guardian thread because I didn't know where else to put it.

I haven't read the clusterfuck that I'm sure the comments will be, but on my first reading of the NYMag article, having read first the palaver, then Laurie Penny's ridiculous Gawker article...

I'm the first person to cry "sexism" in any situation where I detect even a sniff of it, but my reaction was: actually, not sexist. Hilarious.

That is: that I don't think that it's Penny's gender that caused the clusterfuck, but the things she wrote and the attitudes she seemed to take. I'm sure that she may receive a greater and more pointed *beatdown* for it, but the opprobrium is not due to her gender, but the fact that she behaved in a kind of a ridiculous and cliched manner. But, like, that's actually what some of us like LOLrie Penny for?

"This is, by any measure, the portion of the electorate that is among the most marginalized and stigmatized, and hence probably most in need of the right to have a say in who governs their lives. But discussions on both sides of voter ID laws tend to leave out transgender citizens in discussions about who would be most adversely impacted."

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2012/07/03/510454/gop-state-senator-will-teach-brooklyn-women-to-act-like-ladies/

Women of Brooklyn, New York, State Senator Marty Golden (R) wants to turn you into proper ladies fit for employment.

As part of a summer series on career development directed at his female constituents, Golden is hosting a taxpayer-funded event called “Posture, Deportment and the Feminine Presence” on July 24. Golden promises to teach Bay Ridge women “the art of feminine presence,” which includes tips on how to “sit, stand and walk like a model” and “walk up and down a stair elegantly”:

http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Google-ChromeScreenSnapz038.png

Golden defended the workshop as simply a way to help women get jobs in a tough market. Countering this justification, State Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) told City & State:

“Rather than passing legislation such as the Fair Pay Act to assist women in the workplace, the Senate Republicans appear to be offering career advice on posture and how to act feminine,” said Krueger, who hosted the Senate Democrats’ forum on issues affecting women in the workplace in May. “Perhaps this would be appropriate on Mad Men, but not in New York in the 21st century.“

Golden was the only Brooklyn senator to vote against New York’s same-sex marriage law.

Update

Golden’s website has deleted the above quotes from the event page.

Julie Derpy (Phil D.), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 01:23 (eleven years ago) link

from the article mh cited two weeks back:

"We found that employed husbands in traditional marriages, compared to those in modern marriages, tend to (a) view the presence of women in the workplace unfavorably, (b) perceive that organizations with higher numbers of female employees are operating less smoothly, (c) find organizations with female leaders as relatively unattractive, and (d) deny, more frequently, qualified female employees opportunities for promotion."

The studies showed that personal views and the domestic architecture of male leaders' private lives helped shape women's professional opportunities. This held true in both surveys and lab experiments, including one that tested whether candidates with identical backgrounds, but different names -- Drew versus Diane -- should receive a spot in a sought-after, company-sponsored MBA program. According to the research, men in traditional marriages gave Diane "significantly poor evaluations" compared to Drew. It seems that husbands with wives working at home imprinted that ideal onto women in the office.

holy shit. shouldn't be any surprise, but still comes as something of a shock. leads me to suppose that the upper executive ranks of american business are typically filled by men in what the study calls "traditional marriages" (where the husband works for pay and the wife works at home). this might help explain why career progress for women tends to stall out as they near those levels.

I just want to rant a little about "manic pixie dream girl," first described by the yucky Nathan Rabin, and subject of this much yuckier video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBNss2PMj60

"The cause of the manic pixie dream girl is still little understood. Although my own theory is severe retardation of the brain."
Like I could say a lot of shit about this but I'm just going to say it's pesky. All those movies where they magic some creative type out of a funk, sure, it's played ººº but extending it to IRL I guess anyone with bangs and glasses is just too precious (=stupid?) to go on?
