- remember how aweseome Casey Jones was in the movie? I had such a crush on him

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

I vividly recall a friend introducing me to the (second-gen, kiddie friendly) TMNT comics.
He basically turned into Milhouse. "It's great -- these turtles are really kickass at ninja-fighting and they have a mentor who's a rat and they eat pizza ALL THE TIME!"

Why on earth was April O'Neil's always dressed in a yellow jumpsuit anyways? Wasn't she a journalist?
(Uh, oh my -- image-googlers be warned: turns out there's a pornographer by that name. Not to mention that a lot of people apparently have felt the urge to draw her being banged by the teenage mutant herpes turtles)

Øystein, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago) link

I think April wore that cos she was so sexy they had to put her in the least flattering costume ever. And she was still bangin'.

I discovered TMNT one day in Elementary school when some kid had a bunch of action figures. The first two movies are really fun to watch. The first one, in particular, is pretty dark and gritty. The cartoon was a staple of my Sat. mornings and the arcade games are some of the coolest licensed games ever.

The CGI movie was pretty fun, good times. Don't understand why they are going live action rather than CGI cos frankly you can't top the turtles from the first movie.

Also someone who think Bay is sodomizing the franchise must not be aware of "Ninja Rap", the third film, the TV show with the lady ninja turtle, or the Coming Out Of Their Shells musical tour.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:06 (twelve years ago) link

One other point about the upcoming movie: the OG creators were never sticklers about cross-media (or even cross-book) continuity. Like, there are easily a half dozen variants of the origin story, for example. But none of those veered as far afield as Bay's proposed vision.

Also, for those who didn't know, the TMNT are owned by Nickelodeon now, not Eastman & Laird. Which may go some way towards explaining why (wrt this particular instance, anyway) Bay just don't give a fuck.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

People crying about the Bay-ificsation of TMNT have apparently forgotten about this abomination...

Ninja Turtles, cartoon on, was never a high-quality piece of thoughtful entertainment (I never read the original comics of it). It's really irritating to me that kids are being marketed the same things their parents were 20-30 years ago. Maybe this trend's gone on for a long time but I never noticed it. Today's children need their own pile of singular inane, commercialized shit to cherish.

Marilyn Hagerty: the terroir of tiny town (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:12 (twelve years ago) link

I pretty much deny all knowledge of the turtles after the first movie

and even the live turtles in the first movie were a liiiiiiiiiiittle creepy

more fun as a cartoon imo

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

the comic was great once eastman and laird quit. some very interesting zulli and veitch work.

BTW, Michael Zulli's three-issue run on TMNT in 1991 is the benchmark of the whole series...

whether or not there's any validity to the complaints, can't we all at least agree that professional grief being heaped upon michael bay is net gain for humanity?

Thing I liked most about the first couple of movies was the connection they had to NY/bboy culture, however vague. It was like watching a live action anime about a bunch of breakdancers. Also hands up everyone who can sing the verse couple of verses of the T.U.R.T.L.E. Power rap from the 1st film....?

Possibly matt groening is a little luckier.

Sheepish handraise.

Today's children need their own pile of singular inane, commercialized shit to cherish.

Massively OTM! When current generations hijack the nostalgia of previous generations, we get Woodstock '94. And '99. Never forget.

xxpost but I thought that they don't make any scratch off TMNT? something about their deal with Nickelodeon screwed them out of the glory? or am I totally wrong

Also kids have plenty of their own dumb shit and I'm sure they were trying to market "the Apple Dumpling Gang: the next generation: the animated series" or something when I was young.
I have to say it is p weird working w/eighth graders & they try and school me on who the Ninja Turtles are, though.

Judging from my niece's favorite shows, look for Olivia and Yo Gabba Gabba hologram reboots in 2042

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

I was a huge TMNT nerd as a kid, but the only thing I'll really rep for these days is the Archie Comics series (geared more towards kids and ostensibly an offshoot of the not-so-hot cartoon) and some of the original black & white stuff.

Soggy Cheeseburgers (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 20 March 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

xxpost sometimes it's cool though - my niece's path into anime started with Robotech when she was about 10, and as her grownup Aunt and Uncle, Mr Veg and I couldn't have been more psyched to hand her the armload of dvd box sets.

The Nickelodeon sale was two years ago - first issue came out in 1984.

(Eastman stopped working at Mirage when Tundra launched c. 1991, sold all his share bar a creator interest to Laird/Mirage in 2000, and Laird bought the rest out in 2008.)

at least 'life in hell' used to be great. tbh i think eastman and laird's original comics are pretty mediocre. my fondest TMNT memories are of the arcade game.

Looks less like a movie poster more like the side of a vending machine advertizing a new flavor of Mountain Dew.
