"brandy & coke" was a total

I thought "Brandy" was better for a while but "JD" just kind of snuck up on me.

I assume you dudes heard "Over Me" from last year?

What's especially dope is the Summer 2 Step Mix:

I also love the unofficial sequel "Breaking Free":

Kinda sad that r|t|c isn't around to bask in the belated take-up of the idea he put so much effort into promulgating over a year ago (namely the ineffable genius of etc.)

it doesn't sound like a very RTCesque turn of phrase!

i have always disliked the word "ineffable" tbh. one of the first words i can remember disliking.

No I didn't mean the phrase, I mean DJ Q's genius.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

I can see how my prior post was confusing, but I am confident that the phrase "the ineffable..." will not be going viral any time soon.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

I've liked DJ Q for years, I just didn't start checking for him obsessively until recently.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

DJ Q as a "thing" post the golden age of bassline is something that has seeped into popular consciousness only over the past 18 months I'd say.

In particular the melting pot of bassline, 2-step and grime (with smatterings of dubstep, old school house, funky etc) that his dj sets from the last few years basically define.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

Also I wasn't accusing you personally of being a new jack, Rev, DJ Q's rep has exploded in general over about the last 6 months in particular.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, but I understand, before recently I just kind of treated him as a "like him when I hear him" type thing.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

his 97 remix of dizzee's "flex" is still all time, of course. And "you wot".

The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

One thing I love about this scene (and it was true in the early days of funky as well) is how totally random (but awesome) outsider tunes become massive anthems. Maya Jane Coles' "what they say" being a good example.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

i gotta youtube that, but yes, i loved that about funky. "we belong to the night", "self religion", "turn me on", etc

The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

"what they say" is basically an organ anthem.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

same guy? used to love this bitd

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD1WJP9PoI0

piscesx, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

i didn't realize the organ stuff was apart from this scene. i thought it was just kind of in another part of the spectrum. xp

The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:35 (twelve years ago) link

Oh no "what they say" isn't an Organ anthem, haha. Maya makes euro deep house and occasionally dubstep. But it feels like an organ anthem in this context. It's an inadvertent resonance perhaps.

Organ, as such, seems both part of this scene and also apart from it, slightly, in the sense that there are Organ DJs who would never touch the harder stuff that DJ Q plays. Though really the same is true of all the scene's constituent parts so that probably doesn't mean much.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:41 (twelve years ago) link

oh, you meant small "o" organ, i gotchu

His "Enters the Unknown" mix CD is amazing.

I've also found myself gravitating towards that lovely nexus of bassline, grime, funky, and all the techno-y and housey bits of dubstep as of late. It almost feels like lots of things are moving in this direction. Maybe its just me.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 19 March 2012 22:59 (twelve years ago) link

all the techno-y and housey bits of dubstep as of late

it's quite interesting seeing what's "in" and what's outside the nexus of the above stuff - it's not just a quality issue either, some housey post-dubstep I adore would sound very out of place in a DJ Q mix whereas other stuff I like but less enthusiastically feels like a perfect fit (and tends to sound much better in that context than in isolation).

His "Enters the Unknown" mix CD is amazing.

I should just break down and order this from boomkat, shouldn't I.

Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

Getting more play in a variety of DJ sets in a variety of (obv really close together) genres, getting lots of critical attention (including stuff like doing DJ mixes for magazines), tunes seeming to get a (relatively) high sales results on juno etc, releases on more critically respectable labels...

It's one of those tracks that's totally easy to miss in that way because it sort of feels like it's been around for ever and is not in fact the product of a particular individual, just a structurally necessary moment in the mix.

the new Barely Royal compilation "100% Bass" is giving me the same kind of feeling a DJ Q Kiss show gave me - lots of opulent bangers of growling subs and wobbling midrange, rhythmically thrilling but direct and brutalist, new vocal anthems mixed with refixes of 90s pop-house, skirting awfulness with tastelessness but never less than joyous glee

(except the drum & bass tracks on it, they're mostly rubbish)

boxedjoy, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 08:57 (five years ago) link

caught him live at a festival recently. it was a lot more bassline and a lot less garage-house than i'd expected

This Fabriclive mix is fucking bonkers in the best way - personal highlight is the end of his remix of the Stingray theme (!) and a sample intones "anything can happen in the next half hour" and it feels like a promise as much as a punchline. Why can't all music be so charismatic and fun and joyous?

boxedjoy, Friday, 14 December 2018 12:42 (five years ago) link

The Stingray drop is one of my favourite musical moments of the year but the mix in general is, I dunno, enjoyable but slightly frustrating and unsatisfying? Like it could stand to be more pop maybe?

It's like when Q was at his peak his sets had this magical alchemy, like he'd perfected the ratios of bassline brutalism, garage slink and pop shamelessness and his recent sets have more of the former and less of the latter. Over the last few years Q (and TQD in particular) have become fixtures on the UK festival bosh circuit and as a result maybe his sets have lost a bit of the balance that used to make them special. He's amped up the ruffness and cut back on the sugar.

Matt DC, Friday, 14 December 2018 13:18 (five years ago) link

sounds a little like the journey taken by my other favourite dj, jd twitch!

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 14 December 2018 13:20 (five years ago) link

it seems likely that hanging out around kiss and 1xtra would result in a bit of residual pop rubbing off?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 14 December 2018 13:23 (five years ago) link

I do wish there was a little more of the shameless 90s-ecstasy-refix about it but obvz that wouldn't be very on-brand for Fabric to have something like the Motez remix of "Don't Call Me Baby" or whatever
