i had a draft last weekend that was Al only and by the end - i didn't even know who i was drafting.curious to see what ILBB thinks of the trivial decisions i was making towards the end...i picked Jarred Parker over Brad Peacock and Dayan Viciedo over Alejandro De Aza.none of whom i'd heard of before that draft had started!

My other league is 8 people that I know IRL and it's super casual, 9 batting positions, points H2H, 5 bench spots, lock players for the week, and most interestingly you pick a pitching staff instead of individual pitchers. We each got 2 keepers (picked in rd 1/2) and the expansion teams got two "free" picks in the first two rounds from the non-keepered dudes. Every team looks like a separate all-star team, it's silly. Here's mine:
Rd 1, Pk 7 - Mike Trout (Keeper 1)Rd 2, Pk 2 - Matt Kemp (Keeper 2)Rd 3, Pk 7 - Ian KinslerRd 4, Pk 2 - Ryan ZimmermanRd 5, Pk 7 - Paul GoldschmidtRd 6, Pk 2 - Washington NationalsRd 7, Pk 7 - Billy ButlerRd 8, Pk 2 - Jacoby Ellsbury (yeah nobody wanted to fuck with JE)Rd 9, Pk 7 - Ian DesmondRd 10, Pk 2 - Miguel MonteroRd 11, Pk 7 - Oakland AthleticsRd 12, Pk 2 - Adam EatonRd 13, Pk 7 - Jimmy Rollins (seriously I just took the dudes nobody wanted to fuck with)Rd 14, Pk 2 - Mike MoustakasRd 15, Pk 7 - Chris DavisRd 16, Pk 2 - Angel Pagan (dropped for Yasiel Puig as a stasher, gonna pick him up again when Eaton gets DLed finally)
Arguably one of the worst teams in the league, and my first H2H opponent:
Rd 1, Pk 2 - Jose Bautista (keeper 1)Rd 2, Pk 7 - Chase Headley (keeper 2)Rd 3, Pk 2 - Prince FielderRd 4, Pk 7 - Aaron HillRd 5, Pk 2 - Danny Espinosa (apparently an accident, he got real mad when he realized he did that)Rd 6, Pk 7 - Michael BournRd 7, Pk 2 - Toronto Blue Jays (homer)Rd 8, Pk 7 - Joe MauerRd 9, Pk 2 - Shin-Soo ChooRd 10, Pk 7 - Elvis AndrusRd 11, Pk 2 - Josh ReddickRd 12, Pk 7 - Tyler ColvinRd 13, Pk 2 - Michael Saunders (canadian homer)Rd 14, Pk 7 - Pedro AlvarezRd 15, Pk 2 - Alex AvilaRd 16, Pk 7 - Arizona Diamondbacks

drafted for my annual money league which is the only league i care about (bc money) and i ended up drafting every single trendy sleeper pitcher and now i'm worried. i just couldn't stop. i even compiled a list of boring pitchers to aim for because i always ignore boring pitchers. and i ignored the entire list. this is getting to be a problem :(
Yu DarvishMatt MooreMax ScherzerTim LincecumJeff SamardzijaBrett AndersonMatt HarveyJason Hammel
well, take off hammel and add marco estrada and julio teheran and i would've had all of them
― This is called money bags. (zachlyon), Monday, 25 March 2013 20:51 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, it's through them.
I actually find it really refreshing. Way, way way less streaming/other shenanigans w/ pitching (altho sometimes people will pick up a middling team because their ace has two starts or particularly weak opponents). But also a lot of people in the league, god love em, would probably be overwhelmed if they had to know the difference between two different non-Toronto 4th starters or 8th inning loogies. The system wouldn't work if the points weren't so well-balanced between pitching & batting (or if it were roto or if you could swap out players/staffs ever day).
This is the second year we've run it though and last year was an absolute blast, probably the most enjoyment I've ever gotten out of a fantasy game, because I knew everyone and even the least fantasy-geek inclined people were completely engaged all season.
xp btw

and then in my points league i ended up with a really weird team bc pitchers always get more points than hitters, so if you organize ESPN's draft module thing by projected points you end up with a top 50 that includes like 35 pitchers. apparently EVERYONE else in the draft only paid attention to this and filled up quick on pitching because they don't understand how value works. so i ended up with this lineup:
C: Buster Posey1B: Albert Pujols2B: Ian Kinsler3B: Pablo SandovalSS: Marco ScutaroOF: Matt HollidayOF: Jason HeywardOF: Norichika AokiUTIL: Nick Swisher
and meanwhile my pitching staff is worse than the norm but not by much

12-team traditional rotisserie league, $300 cap - I won it my first year playing in 1991 w/ Cecil Fielder and Bobby Thigpen leading the charge; I don't remember collecting winnings as a 10-year old, tbh, so I think I might have gotten screwed. I think I've managed to win every 4-5 years since then on average.I had to throw back Jason Heyward @17, Mike Napoli@17, Billy Butler@27, some other good ones due to keeper restrictions. But I have Strasburg and Bryce Harper cheap and some other quality youth cheap - prices increase by a schedule every year, so if you keep a $16-21 player this year, he's $22 next year then $27 and on up until $52 where the price sticks.
C - Arencibia $3C - Posey $171B - Rizzo $72B - Uggla $11 - I really wanted Jedd Gyorko here but I started bidding on Uggla and I don't know why 3B - Beltre $27SS - Castro $121/3 - Alvarez $172/S - Jeter $8 - there was no one left, fuck fuck fuckOF - Bourn $21OF - Harper $7OF - Adam Jones $22OF - Markakis $6OF - BJ Upton $35 - oh shit have him in two leagues fuckUT - VERNON WELLS - lol cut him for the best free agent left
Josh Beckett - $1AJ Burnett - $4AJ Griffin - $5Dan Haren - $7Hellickson - $8Motte - $12 - hope you don't need a new elbow, broNiese - $7Parnell - $5Strasburg - $17Verlander - $27

I tend to blow off saves and try to get them during the season, but our auctions don't really work out for going with super-cheap pitching so I never quite nail down the LIMA plan/etc.
also two big roster (24 active, 10 reserve, 5 minors) draft leagues but they're boring and I only play in them because I always have. Auctions are so much better. If you've only played draft or online, find a local group and have an auction league!

Second one I have buyer's remorse on keeping Adam Jones @ $22 over Heyward @ $17, but I think Jones has a lower floor for this year at least.

Posey, Rizzo, Castro, Harper, Strasburg all started out in my minorsfirst year call-up, the salary is $5, goes up to $7 then up in $5 increments every year. If you pay attention to your minors, you can build a solid, cheap core. I'm jelly of the guy who beat me to Trout in the minor league draft.
The only thing that's screwed me is that we only protect 6 position players/4 pitchers max. Everyone else uses Baseball America or w/e for their minors draft, so they wind up with single-A shortstops who can't hit beyond the five or six guys who get a lot of press.

I'm overthinknig this so much. In the finals vs. a guy I really don't want to win my other glorping league. Starting to overthink this.
7/9 of my starters are decided -- the rest of my team is "stacked" on paper but seriously having my doubts. I'm starting Trout and Harper in the OF (big trade last year & this year to get them in a keeper league, awwww yeeeeah), but I need to start another OF and another U. Who would you pick from this list?
Swisher (hot), Jupton (not so much + lots of righties), Granderson (cold), Butler (hmmmmm), Kemp (ugh), Ellsbury (injured until at least Wednesday). Rosters get locked tonight for the week, btw.
Any thoughts?
― I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Monday, 23 September 2013 16:54 (ten years ago) link
You have Trout, Harper, Granderson, Butler, Kemp, and Ellsbury on the same team? Jeez.
― polyphonic, Monday, 23 September 2013 17:35 (ten years ago) link
It's a super shallow 8 team league, and I made a massive trade near the deadline shipping out my late round goldmine Chris Davis (along with the Tigers pitching staff and Ian Desmond) getting Grandy, Jupton and Harper back. It was a pretty lopsided pull but the other guy was out of the running and wanted a keeper for next year who'd give him a big advantage (Davis over Jupton or Harper or Grandy makes sense).
Year before I traded the same guy Fielder and got Trout. Which at the time might have looked like kind of an over-pay... that one worked out. :) The others -- Kemp, keeper; Ellsbury, fell realllly far in the draft for some reason; Butler, mid-round pick that hasn't really been good enough for my starting nine (did I mention I jumped super early on Goldschmidt, too?)
