Mrs Smiths Rather Special

Ate this, with shortbread, all through an otherwise rather miserable preteen "being taken to see your mouldy oldies" rainy and bug-ridden trip through Scotland.

Highland Croft lemon curd is tremendous (in spite of the "jist like mither made" uberscotchery on the packaging).

When I was like 12, this one store in my town started carrying lemon curd and would keep a little jar w a plate of crackers on the table in their foyer for you to sample because no one knew what it was. My mother made me try it. It was like delicious sweet-sour summer on a knife. Never looked back.

Sounds good. Last year I made real eggnog too - aged bourbon, fresh nutmeg, just awesome. My stupid family didn't like it because it was "unconventional" and "thin" and went to buy a mix from the gas station, to which they added non-dairy cream

aka vanilla bean (remy bean), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

wtf is non-dairy cream? That's like non-bread toast?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

get rid of stupid family, ILX will be your family and drink yr eggnog

I make lemon curd all the time for work, it is delicious. and easy!

right now I am making a Meyer Lemon Cream, you cool it down to 140 F before adding the butter, so it stays in emulsion.

1 1/4 C meyer lemon juice
2 C sugar
6 eggs
2 yolks

mix together, heat to 180 F in a double boiler, cool to 140

put into blender and slowly add 1 pound of butter

cool and serve

There's a bakery in SF called Tartine that makes a really great tarte au citron

― L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, March 14, 2012 8:10 AM (4 hours ago)

!!! a friend of mine works there, and I did not know this !!! (friend owes me a favor or two so....)

sarahell, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 19:59 (twelve years ago) link

I use the Tartine cookbook on a regular basis, yum

that lemon cream recipe is from it.

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

I made lemon curd and it was surprisingly easy!
Would you all hate me if I said I didn't much like that lemon meringue pie thing from Tartine (haven't tried the tarte au citron)

kinder, Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

Damn I haven't had lemon meringue pie in such a long time.

a dramatic lemon curd experience (snoball), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

in my experience the Tartine lemon merinque is serviceable but not spectacular, also does not age well after the first day.

Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't had the meringue but then I'm not really much of a meringue fan

L'ennui, cette maladie de tous les (Michael White), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

it's troo that lemon curd codes somewhat "fancy" in the US. not sure why, as lemon bars and meringue pies are common & very similar. always want it to be a bit more astringent.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

Meringue needs to be eaten fresh the same day. Loses it's 'fluff' if it's left longer.

a dramatic lemon curd experience (snoball), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

Lemon curd is pretty easy to make, fwiw. Not pesto easy, but.

I tell you what I really like: donuts with lemon curd filling instead of jam.

Sometimes if I was depressed after a day at work in my old IT support hell job I'd buy four and eat them in one evening.
