cooking, aesthetic tastes, and pasta vs rice are areas of compromise, I think.

I think I've had enough of gays loving Victor Calderone remixes of Madonna though

a great thing about having a bf is evaluating yourself and how you live your life and do things and seeing how the other person can positively alter you, if you let him

yah. Most of the changes wrought by companionship are subtle and take months or years to show.

j0rdan otm. i think it's not fair at all to have huge expectations of other people while refusing to budge yourself.

sometimes i'd find sitting in traffic on my way home to be very zen

this is actually nuts

haha

i don't have massive expectations of other people except as it pertains to what they expect of me

i mean probably, yeah xp

Having a bf is helping me realize some of my annoying and/or selfish habits

Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

altho sometimes it's nice if someone comes along with you to do something even if they don't want to even if you have to return the favor

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

What makes accepting those changes in a relationship is suddenly realizing you're no longer one of the friends watching and criticizing your bro as he subtly changes -- now it's you.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

not to get all regionally competitive abt it but rhode island drivers are THE most disgusting savages and there is nothing zen about having someone sit blocking your lane as they force a left hand turn into the oncoming lane xp

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, that's kind of an important realization xp

tbh i take pride in making my person happy, so while i definitely take pride in myself, ima change like a girl before a date if it means making him smile

yah. Most of the changes wrought by companionship are subtle and take months or years to show.

i think this is a different thing, obv one's character changes over time and is necessarily affected by everything you go through and everyone you know, but it's more...specific things that i do and about the manner in which i like to live my life, i am not gonna change those at anyone's behest

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago) link

it fell on a pile of laundry so i didn't have to pick it up, then it rolled away when i did the laundry and has come to rest next to the wardrobe. i can't be bothered yet

The nice thing about my annoying and/or selfish habits is they don't seem that way if I spend the entire day alone.

Lex, have you ever had a patient, cooking-skilled friend go through a few basic things with you, in your own kitchen?

Btw I never cooked rice till WmC shared that rice recipe a couple years ago on the cooking thread - it makes perfect rice and you can skip the saute bit at the start.

just1n3, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

no. i miiight be amenable to that but i don't really want to ask because a) i don't think it would end well b) i don't know what to ask or where to start.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

man I should have really invited you over when you were last here

Sometimes my commute ends too quickly. Yesterday I was engrossed in a book so I stayed on to the end of the line and then rode back.

I miss doing this. I've taken to podcasting on buses in the past year which is just NOT the same thing and it's a bad habit. Music has taken over headphones at the gym where podcasts once ruled and thus books on the bus have been shoved to the side. Might be the solution to the lack of fiction I've read lately.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 23:35 (twelve years ago) link

Xps just ask, and just be completely honest about your lack of skills. Cooking rice and pasta, sauteing veggies, marinating meats, boiling/steaming veggies, baking and pan-frying meat, roasting - these are all simple techniques that are (usually) easy to learn, and will provide you with many different kinds of meals. Get your friend to do each technique and explain why they are doing each piece of that technique. Then have them walk you through doing it yourself another time.

Just an idea! Also: alcohol should be involved in these lessons, if you think it'll help you not feel so pressured.

the glass of wine you drink while cooking is my favorite glass of wine

Also, Lex, even though I learned to cook at a very young age, I hated it for years bc I had to cook most of the family meals from 12-18. I've only started to really get more into it bc I am fortunate enough to have a v appreciative audience - it has def inspired me to cook much more adventurously than I ever imagined possible.

It would be a plus to find some 30-year-old culinary whiz who's into me.

I make spaghetti with Ragu Light sauce once a week.

hi cad! damn, you never know what topic's going to bring the nice straight boys into the thread.

What do you do? I just saute garlic and onion and pepper and then add the water and soaked black beans and a bay leaf and simmer for a bit

Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

i brown diced onions & jalapenos & minced garlic in a skillet, add tomato paste, adobo, cumin, cayenne, black pepper, let it get all nice and carmelized and sticky, and deglaze with red wine vinegar. add to simmering beans.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

it just takes a bit of planning bcz you have to prepare the night before. Just sort, soak, and simmer!
