2. saute the rice in your saucepan with olive oil (or canola I guess) until the rice starts smelling like popcorn

impressive, very first step and you've already lost me

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

bread/cheese/apple was my default meal when I worked at walmart (and stole my food)

tanuki, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 14:57 (twelve years ago) link

i actually - my favorite meal to have when i have a day off is a toasted 8 grain baguette sandwich with cheese and sliced granny smith

surm, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

my lunch is usually pb&j/piece of fruit (usually apple)/handful of cookies

althea and (donna rouge), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:00 (twelve years ago) link

I need to investigate apples. I want juicy and tart but with some sweetness too. Braeburns aren't bad. What else?

Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:03 (twelve years ago) link

WINESAP, but i only ever find them at the orchard

surm, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

braeburns are good, so are galas

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

you can't really go wrong with golden delicious

pink ladys taste nice but are too small

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

lex, you claim to have tried hard for 10 years to learn to cook and you wouldn't know where to begin to cook rice and you burn pasta 90% of the time... i wonder what you think "try" and "learn" and "cook" mean.

one of the best appliances i ever bought was a rice cooker

free societies must let drunken gay Texans have sex (Je55e), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:14 (twelve years ago) link

lex you should just buy a rice cooker, honest

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

I couldn't eat out every night. Never mind the expense -- I couldn't control sodium, cholesterol and additive content

Understood, but I'd rather chop 10 years off my life than spend 70 years cooking. I have no feel for it and detest it.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:19 (twelve years ago) link

i never said i tried hard. i gave up pretty quickly after being reduced to breakdown territory a few times.

morbz otm

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

i'm ok with not eating rice at home, whenever i'm in that carb-heavy mood i just have pasta

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

i happen to enjoy small kitchen appliances but then again i also have a embroidered yarn waterfall in my kitchen and lots of measuring cups so i am just kinda the domestic gay type i guess

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

I thought rice cookers were silly b/c you can cook rice in a pan, but the thing was, I NEVER cooked rice in a pan. If I ever did cook rice at all, it was Minute Rice or even pre-cooked frozen rice from TJ. But now I cook tons of rice + other things in the rice cooker. It is fool-proof: measure your rice, measure your water, cover, press one switch, walk away, and 15 minutes later: RICE.

sometimes i feel guilty at how little i care about interior decoration or domestic aesthetics. my room has bare walls and no ornamentation apart from a penguin paperweight that fell on the floor about 3 weeks ago that i still haven't picked up yet

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

i found a seriously heavy panini press at a catholic charity shop and it's the best thing.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

buying a rice cooker with a timer legitimately changed my life

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

i think i maybe would care about these things if i was rolling in cash because i don't like the DIY aesthetic enough to, um, do it. i'd rather just buy expensive shit that looks nice. but i can live without it.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

if i cooked rice i'd have to think about cooking sauce which...no. pasta you can eat with frozen peas and pesto and no hassle whatsoever unless i burn it all.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

It would be a plus to find some 30-year-old culinary whiz who's into me.

I make spaghetti with Ragu Light sauce once a week.

hi cad! damn, you never know what topic's going to bring the nice straight boys into the thread.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

Easiest meal ever (learned from ILX's Jenny): throw rice in rice cooker, put Trader Joe's tuna curry packet on steam basket, press Cook. Pet cat, check ILX, exfoliate T-zone, listen for rice cooker to sound all-clear. Combine rice + tuna, chow down.

indeed, at this rate i think it's more likely that i stumble into money and hire a full-time chef though

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

i am lucky to have Ryan's cooking in my life, he is like my very own mama celeste !

surm, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:32 (twelve years ago) link

the banginest snack for me is crackers + almond butter + apple slices. mmmm. easy enough for both lex and i.

otherwise i'm stuck with frozen pasta dinners (trader joe's has some that aren't gross) or turkey burgers or some kind of pitiful sandwich. over and over and over. at some point i'm going to have to focus some energy on finding something new. preferably less carbs!

the best is when my dad brings me a bunch of stuff he's made that i can freeze and treat myself to on special occasions.

i'm such a vulture when people offer to cook for me. YES PLEASE

i eat a lot of soups like http://www.newcoventgardensoup.com/ and similar ranges - healthy, light but filling, really tasty, varied, just pop in the microwave and accompany with a bit of bread or toast

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:37 (twelve years ago) link

My pa is the mojito expoit. I can't stand there and crush mint leaves and sugar three minutes per drink.

i host an annual port & stilton evening so i'd just bring something along those lines

and by some of you guys i guess i just mean lex

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:53 (twelve years ago) link

cooking rice is pretty easy, also insanely cheap and pretty filling

idk how y'all profess to eat out all the time, aside from the expense it can be more time consuming/tiring than just baking some chicken and making some rice

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:54 (twelve years ago) link

- i am hardline w/r/t being controlled: my attitude is always "this is how i live my life, if you don't like it the door is that way". fuck a compromise!

ALSO THIS IS NUTS

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:54 (twelve years ago) link

lol jordan i love that u cook

love some baked chicken

surm, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

how is that nuts!

i have never professed to eat out all the time, once a week at most and often not even that. i have professed to scavenge on bread and cheese and crackers and fruit and yoghurt all the time

lex pretend, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

one of my absolute favorite things to do w/ my bf is cook. shit is super fun, also it's really cool to just have nice meals at home, idk.

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

i've no idea how one even begins to bake chicken or indeed do anything with raw meat.

After elmo's party I'll put some chicken thighs in the oven.

i think this is actually more crazy than eating out all the time, but i guess if you can live that way, more power to you. personally i would end up murdering someone.

3hunn O))) (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

there is absolutely no connection between (my) cooking and nice meals. it has never even nearly happened
