i liked how the most knowledgeable fans in basketaball made it sound like a laker home game, except louder. the "mvp!" chants were great.

two weeks pass...
"Wow, how can you lose a ballgame like that?" Jackson said. "I just don't understand sometimes the capabilities of this team to disappoint."

"I'm befuddled. Perplexed. Mystified," Bryant said. "Just put the first half of the season behind us. We wish we could have played a lot better this first half of the season. Unfortunately, it didn't happen."

laker gm mitch kupchak was at the table next to me last night here in beautiful brentwood ca. he spent an hour playing card games with his two kids and had the scallops, which i had as well (excellent). his wife is very tall. his six year old said that the lakes needed "someone to help kobe with scoring" and mitch said "you have to give up stars to get stars". i will keep you posted as i learn more.

the west is wide open! can the lakers could sustain the defensive effort we saw against the pistons on saturday? we may be on the verge of seeing something truly special--one for the ages.

dan (dan), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

The Lakers are horrendous.
Not Knicks bad, mind you; but still BAD

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 07:17 (eighteen years ago) link

They're just WEIRD, cos they can beat the Pistons but lose to the Blazers all in one fell swoop. I never tire of beating them, though.

Pwnjabi MC (Matt Chesnut), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 13:53 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah this team is such a fascinating mess. one game lamar odom can look like the most exciting, versatile player in the game, and the next he's taking two terrible shots, losing the handle and refuses to touch the ball for the rest of the half. so weird.

never mind that the bench (and in my mind, the bench starts with kwame and sometimes smush...even though they're starters) is GARBAGE

The Pau-powered Grizzles have been playing some stupid games lately - they were playing Chuck & Duck w/ the Warriors last week (I think), and put up 130+!

God damn me, I'm kinda liking the Lakers this year. 2 dudes on my fantasy team (Kobe & Kwame) + TV announcers that don't sound like Hawk Harrelson homers (CHICAGO BULLS I'm looking right @ you stupid asses) + WTF assistance from Farmar Superstar (copyright G. Cosloy) & SMUSH + the triangle in all its glory = FUN!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 10 January 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I still don't get why announcers rooting for their team is a bad thing.

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:57 (seventeen years ago) link

It doesn't have to be! However, whenever I've come across it (most notably during ChiSox / Bulls games), this rampant boosterism is there in place of everything else. At least leaven the yay-rah-rah crap w/ some actual observations or analysis that's semi-impartial, or at least feign some interest in what the other team's doing.

I watched this Lakers / Bulls game a few weeks ago, and it was the perfect example of what NOT to do. The announcers were actually telling Kobe to sit down after he fouled out! And when they weren't doing that, they were waxing Michael Jordan's pole, because IN NO WAY is Kobe one-fiftieth the player MJ was, so let's spend 6 straight possessions belaboring that point. (I want to say Stacey King was the one that couldn't shut up, because LOL @ Stacey King.)

The Celtics announcers are total homers (I mean, god, Tom Heinsohn is King Homer), but Tommy can also make a good point once in a while, and Mike Gorman's the perfect semi-impartial, totally-professional foil for him. Joel Meyers (sic?), the Lakers broadcaster, is totally pro-Lakers, but he doesn't turn every LA contest into a "GOOD GUYS WIN" sort of dick-off.

You can support the team you work for w/out painting your face and yelling DEFENSE into the microphone. Even disregarding that these formerly regional broadcasts are now available nationwide, it'd behoove these shitwits to maybe think of the local viewership audience that'd like to watch a basketball game & not a pep rally.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 11 January 2007 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I hated King at the beginning, but he's grown on me a lot. I'm actually surprised you named his as an example here, cause he's the one out of the three who provides any sort of game analysis, and that's about all he does. Kerr is useless at this point, but no one is going to tell him he can't broadcast if he still wants to, and I'm ok with that.
(btw they were telling Kobe to sit down cause he was wagging his finger at the ref. If a Bull did that, they'd make a similar comment, except that a Bull would NEVER do that. ok, maybe Wallace, but he doesn't count)

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Friday, 12 January 2007 20:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm with you on the Hawk/DJ thing, though. Makes the games nearly unwatchable.

Chesty Joe Morgan (Chesty Joe Morgan), Friday, 12 January 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah joel stein (is that his name?), the lakers play by play, is a mild homer but he definitely knows the game and gives credit to good play by the opposition. he gets pumped for good lakers plays but he'll give it up for the visitor.

he can't touch ralph lawler's "bingo!" for a good three ball tho

LL cool ranch (Matt Chesnut), Thursday, 18 January 2007 06:12 (seventeen years ago) link

what up w/teh spurs? missing tons of shots last night 5-5 in their last 10? wtf. i am strangely enjoying the lakers this year but their horrible d will do them in eventually. probably the 6th best team in the west - which should be good enough to solidify jackson's rep as the goat.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago) link

If they weren't missing 2 of their starters, their defense might be better, tho. Not that Lamar & Boy Genius Kwame are known for their defensive prowess.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 January 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago) link

kwame is not even known for being a starter

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:41 (seventeen years ago) link

the lakers "horrible d" looked pretty good last night. the spurs missed a ton of shots because they weren't getting open looks--the lakers were rotating off screens and getting somebody in bowen's/ginobli's/barry's face every time they spotted up. it was great defense! what game were you watching? the lakers haven't had their second best player in a month and they're half a game behind san antonio for third best record in the league.

dan (dan), Thursday, 18 January 2007 17:53 (seventeen years ago) link

After Bynum's hot start went pfft, Kwame was starting, tho. &, supposedly, they were scoring more points w/ him in the lineup, because, um, his freethrow technique is impregnable?

the lakers are 22nd in defensive efficiency and yeah the spurs did miss a bunch of shots they usually make, most notably ginobli's wide open three in the last minute.

the lakers have been good, but not really as good as their record. if everyone is healthy and playing, i still like houston and denver better.

those mamba slippers have a sort of post-apocalyptic burger king vibe.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:46 (seventeen years ago) link

The Spurs have been really average after the return to the leather ball. That doesn't excuse it or anything cos obviously everyone is using the same ball, but Barry was shooting lights out before the switch and has really fallen off since the switch. Also, for some reason, the injury to Francisco Elson has fucked with their rotation. Don't ask me how.

I continue to hope in vain for Dirk Nowitzki to come down with some career-ending, but not life deblitating ailment. Something where he can still pal around and brew beer with his future krautbabies but can no longer make Tim Duncan look like an 80-year-old man in large shorts.

Brown won't be prosecuted in cake heist
Associated Press

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. -- A man walking down the street at bar-closing time with a $190 cake in his arms claimed Los Angeles Lakers center Kwame Brown swiped his birthday treat.

But authorities said the cake caper won't be prosecuted.

In a police report, Alexander Martinez said he left his 30th birthday celebration at the Shore Restaurant and Lounge at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday with the uneaten 2-by-2-foot cake and walked north toward the Blue 32 nightclub.

Martinez told police he first came upon Lakers forward Ronny Turiaf, who he said agreed to pose for a photograph with him and the chocolate cake.

But outside of Blue 32, the 6-foot-11, 270-pound Brown came along, grabbed the cake and threw it at Martinez, according to the report. Brown got into a white limousine and left, Martinez claimed in the report, although he didn't suggest any reason for the cake toss.

Martinez reported that he then walked up to Lamar Odom as the Lakers forward left Pedone's Pizza and confronted him about the cake, which was splattered on the birthday man's back.

A man believed to be Odom's bodyguard pushed Martinez into the street, yelling at him to get away from Odom, the police report said.

"Calm down, he didn't do anything," Odom told the man believed to be his bodyguard, the report said.

Everyone then went their separate ways and Martinez filed a police report 12 hours later.

Detectives presented a possible "grand theft of a person" case to the city attorney's office, which decided not to prosecute.

Brown wasn't talking, but Lakers spokesman John Black said the team was aware of the alleged incident and had been told prosecutors were not filing charges. Black had no other comment.

The Lakers are on a three-game road trip through Saturday.

Brown, averaging 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds, has been sidelined since spraining his right ankle on Dec. 31. He is expected back in about two weeks.
