OMG sex ed when i was 14: teacher told us a story about a teenage couple using vicks' vaporub as lube..... YAOOOOOOOW

Rubyredd, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I wonder if that was on the curriculum: "warn the students of the discomforts of rubbing vaporub on their genitals".

wilter, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:35 (sixteen years ago) link

which side are you from tombot, the inside?

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 31 March 2008 03:42 (sixteen years ago) link

My bassist once told the story of his masturbation experiences with ICY/HOT to the recording engineer when we were doing some songs and it definitely was a WTFTMI moment.

estela, Monday, 31 March 2008 06:15 (sixteen years ago) link

i would just like to point out that grointment has been otm throughout this thread

jergïns, Monday, 31 March 2008 06:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

grointment.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link

out of loyalty to the board, affection for both the australian and the new zealander members, and because i lack personal experience with both vegemite and marmite, i voted twice, one time for each.

lxy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

my aunt told a girl at her school that marmite was good for your skin and the next day the girl complained it had got all over her pillowcase. she was an olden days drongo.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:24 (sixteen years ago) link

lol that's ridiculous.

vegemite on toast with a fried egg is good hungover food fyi.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i am going to host a "which is better vegemite or marmite" tasting party (provided i can figure out where to buy them) when remy's here. won't that be fun?

lxy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

to be brutally honest, i think it will be a bad times party.

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

vegemite is hangover miracle food.

lxy, i will send you some if you want, one of each.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

i think we will have enough to drink that it will be a good times party in the end, but thank you for the warning, wilter.

thanks, estela, i'll let you know. first i will look around to see if i can find some here. say, did you ever try the bugles?

lxy, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

lol no, when i went to order them they were waiting for a shipment to arrive, then they moved premises and kept sending out funny frazzled email bulletins about how everything would be on track soon so i just left it, but i'll try again.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:48 (sixteen years ago) link

i just checked: any day now

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I've noticed there are loads more places that stock American confectionary these days. Have you noticed this, estela?

wilter, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:52 (sixteen years ago) link

yes and i'm glad because i have excessive <3 of milk duds and babe ruths.

estela, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 23:58 (sixteen years ago) link

<3 movie candy

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:02 (sixteen years ago) link

TBBH, I'm not that into sweets, but it makes me happy that there is hershey's nonsense and stuff available, it makes aus confectionary seem super lame.

There is a really good place in Coolangatta.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:03 (sixteen years ago) link

where? (not that i get down there very often.)

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:07 (sixteen years ago) link

In the shopping resort thingy. I don't even know what they call it these days, "showcase"?? on the ground floor. It has been there since I can remember.

YAY MILK DUDS

jergïns, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:12 (sixteen years ago) link

why does one recalcitrant dud always stick to the bottom of the box?

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:16 (sixteen years ago) link

i always like that stubborn one the best, it is a classic dud.

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:17 (sixteen years ago) link

actually, that one is the "dud", and the rest of them are known as "milks", hence the name

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:19 (sixteen years ago) link

"recalcitrant dud"

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:20 (sixteen years ago) link

the greatness of milk duds can not be exaggerated

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:22 (sixteen years ago) link

lxy you must let me or estela send you the marmite and vegemite for your party - english marmite is VERY different to nz marmite, and if you do find some it'll probably be the yucky english stuff.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link

if i can get my hands on marmite or vegemite, i promise to make a drink out of each of them and report back.

FB will join me in this endeavor, he just isn't aware of that fact yet.

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

thank you, ruby. i will be sure NOT to buy a sucky english version, and will surely let you know if i am unable to find the real deal.

see, the offers for sending completely justify my dual, self-cancelling vote. i cannot not be forced to choose.

lxy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:30 (sixteen years ago) link

whatwhatwhat?? there are different marmites? why would they do that?! proper (uk) marmite is the pure, distilled essence of happy dreams - equal parts ambrosia, nectar and mana. vegemite is okay because it has a different name and it's your own fault if you buy that instead, but it makes me sad that there is a (likely inferior) product masquerading as marmite.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:33 (sixteen years ago) link

lol so rong.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

apparently ppl use both the mites as warm flu remedy drinks. Sounds awful.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:35 (sixteen years ago) link

I think if you mixed some into a bloody mary it wouldn't be that horrific.

wilter, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:35 (sixteen years ago) link

found the britishes local store http://www.abritishaffaire.com/ lol nice name

jergïns, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost I'm sure that John will be able to report on its efficacy on whatever ailment he has managed to contract by the time he gets his hands on both items

Sara R-C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i left "lack of horrific" behind long ago when it comes to drinking thanks to ILX supporters of the FB and JJ will drink it threads

John Justen, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:38 (sixteen years ago) link

john justen, i am happy to also mail you some vegemite and marmite if you would like (vegemite is going to win.)

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:41 (sixteen years ago) link

John - Dan P can hit you up with some marmite and possibly even some vegmite next time he sends you poop in the mail as we have a lotta irish stores here in Boston that carry it.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:41 (sixteen years ago) link

ha, maybe you could just go to that Irish Indeed store in St. Paul (on Randolph and... uh, one of the cross streets that I pass on my way to St. K) and buy some there. If nothing else, I'm sure you could get some lovely green tschotkes.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:45 (sixteen years ago) link

ok i have A PLAN

estela, you send vegemite to jj and lxy

i will send marmite to jj and lxy

then we will sit back and watch the fun times begin

and WTF mr spiralli???? nz marmite is the BEST you crazy man

Rubyredd, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Hello I am interested in this different NZ marmite? What's that about then? Explain me the difference?

I tried some of that champagne marmite (UK) the other day. Couldn't tell the difference tbh.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:52 (sixteen years ago) link

i dunno, i can't say without having tried the NZ version but if therre was thing The Man didn't need to fuck with, it was marmite. does the NZ one have lamb in to boost the economy?

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:53 (sixteen years ago) link

lamb joke

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:55 (sixteen years ago) link

sorry. i can't help it.

estela, Thursday, 3 April 2008 00:57 (sixteen years ago) link

What you should have taken from that experience is not to argue with an American again

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:00 (one month ago) link

Reminds me of another argument I had with another American friend when we went to a restaurant and he asked for "Worshestershire" sauce and I did an involuntary laugh. NB: I am from Worcester.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:05 (one month ago) link

School me, I've grown up saying "wis-ter-sher" sauce with the accent on the "Wis". I think I've got the syllables right? but have a feeling the accent is off

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:09 (one month ago) link

I know it says "Worcestershire" on the label but I've only heard it called "Worcester sauce" IRL, which is /ˈwʊstər/ "WOOS-ter"

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:12 (one month ago) link

Anyway no judgement, it is an annoying spelling, but he was annoyed at me for laughing and then told me that I was the one pronouncing it incorrectly.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:13 (one month ago) link

Wait till you hear how I used to pronounced Leicester in primary school

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:19 (one month ago) link

Funny story though! Looking forward to smuggly correcting my families pronunciation next steak night. Thanks for the tip

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:19 (one month ago) link

*They're all gonna laugh at me for calling it "rooster sauce" with a lisp*

H.P, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 00:20 (one month ago) link

"Sorry, did you say Lye-kes-ter Square?"

American, proudly: "No, I said Lye-cess-ter Square!"

something something raymond luxury-yacht.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 01:02 (one month ago) link

I have never tried Vegemite. It is quite lacking in aesthetic appeal.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 01:04 (one month ago) link

I have never tried vegemite, it is quite lacking in availability over here - I'm sure you can get it if you really want. I'd be interested to compare it to marmite, which I neither love nor hate.

I presume pronouncing it like 'yosemite' is a hoary old gag.

gene besserit (ledge), Wednesday, 6 March 2024 09:36 (one month ago) link

They did have a big push on Vegemite in the UK maybe 30 years ago? It never really took because all right thinking Britishes said, no thanks, we'll stick with Marmite, it's much nicer.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 09:52 (one month ago) link

yes that would probably be about right - my mum got some and that was our exact reaction to it

+1 for "Worcester sauce", no "shire". label be damned. I worked in the Lea & Perrins factory as a temp in the 90s, the smell put me off the stuff for a couple of years

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 6 March 2024 09:57 (one month ago) link

IIRC from my one trip to the UK in the 90s, Marmite is... sweeter? Like its still savoury but not as briskly savoury as Vegemite is.
